WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

I have some really fucked up cover songs on my work computer.

Lou Barlow doing Bryan Adams' "Run to You" ...Cake doing Black Sabbath's "War Pigs" ... Dinosaur Jr. doing Kiss' "Goin' Blind" ... Dismemberment Plan doing Jennifer Paige's "Crush" ...Pearl Jam doing The Beatles' "I've Got a Feeling" ... Eddie Vedder doing The Beatles' "You've Got to Hide Your Love Away" ... Pearl Jam doing Mother Love Bone's "Crown of Thorns" ... Weezer doing The Pixies' "Velouria" ... NoMeansNo doing Neil Young's "Hey Hey, My My" ... White Stripes doing Captain Beefheart's "Party of Special Things to Do" ... The Raconteurs doing The Who's "The Seeker" ... That's a pretty cool list.

  1. Terry Staunton says Just wait 'til you hear Patti Smith's covers album, due out in April, where she takes on the Stones (Gimme Shelter), Tears For Fears (Everybody Wants To Rule The World), Neil Young (Helpless), The Beatles (Within You Without You), Dylan (Changing Of The Guard), Nirvana (Smells Like Teen Spirit) and Stevie Wonder (Pastime Paradise).

  2. ookpik says That Lou Barlow version of "Run to You" is one of my favourite covers of all time. The enunciation is so great! Other faves: - Cat Power's whole Covers album (and assorted other covers: "Wonderwall"?) - Gillian Welch doing Radiohead's "Black Star" - Devo doing Satisfaction. I like it better than the original. That Patti Smith album sounds promising, T.S. She's always been good at reinterpretation.

  3. mister gary at work again says Man, such a rad covers list ... should be a great album. I actually used to hang out with her son Jackson at shows when I lived in Detroit a few years ago - have to see if he's got any extra info that we're not privvy to.

  4. Terry Staunton says I've played the Patti album through once so far, and some things stick out more than others. The Stones cover is astonishingly good, as is the Stevie Wonder track, but I've got until Monday to write my review (for the UK magazine Record Collector), so I'm kinda reserving judgement for a while.

  5. mister gary at work again says See, I'm surprised to hear that about the Stevie Wonder track, but not at all about the Stones cover. The more I read over that track listing, though, man alive, that is one DIVERSE collection of tracks. Pretty ballsy, to say the least. I dig it.

  6. Terry Staunton says The other Patti covers album inclusions I left out before are... The Boy In The Bubble (Paul Simon), Are You Experienced? (Jimi Hendrix), White Rabbit (Jefferson Airplane), Midnight Rider (Allman Brothers), and Soul Kitchen (The Doors). It's nothing if not interesting, Gary.

  7. Rawkkiddoh says On my classroom computer I had everything the kids were listening to from bands like N Sync to Chris Brown. I should have put a sticker on it that said MTV endorsed.

  8. SamTheButcher says I'm partial to the Promise Ring cover of "Gouge Away" from that same Pixies tribute album. And then there's the Smashing Pumpkins covers of new wave songs from one of their Mellon Collie singles. Good stuff. :)
