Hi Everybody,

I haven't posted in while. But I recently found this song, I wanted to share.

These are two high school guys from Madison Wisconsin who just like to jam with a guitar and a mandolin.

The song is beautiful, let me know what you think...

Happy Spring
Deb

Balkan Beat Box Chicago Show

Let me say, this was perhaps the best live show I have ever seen. Ever. The show was held at the old Logan Auditorium, which is a 3rd floor dance hall, in the old
Polish neighborhood of Chicago. Being the old fuddy duds we are, we decided to sit up in the balcony. It was cozy, we had chairs and tables, plus the space is high, but small, so we could SEE everything great.

The opening band stunk, with a capital S. I'm not sure who they even were, we all plugged our ears during the show. It was SO LOUD . One guy just screamed in the mike, the other guy just danced and moaned into his. When they said that they had cd's available, I was like?? What? You actually recorded this? Wow.

When they finished, we waited for the Balkan Beat Box to come on the stage. We waited for a few minutes, then from behind us on the balcony a lone drummer, started beating on the drum around his neck. A horn player started playing. A guy hitting an old cowbell joined in, then another horn. The 15 or so people on the balcony couldn't believe it. The Balkan Beat Box had snuck in behind us and just started jamming before the show on the balcony. I thought my husband was going to pee his pants he was so excited. They jammed for about 4 or 5 minutes then headed down the stairs, playing and parting the crowd on the floor and jammed their way up to the stage, through the crowd. WHAT A WAY TO START THE SHOW ! (There were only 10 or so people on the small balcony, so it was like a private VIP show!)

The show lasted about 2.5 hours and was the funnest, most interactive show I have ever seen or heard. The lead singer had the whole crowd standing, waving, dancing swaying and JUMPING . Every song was better than the one before it. Their balkan eastern european sound, was a mix of ska, gypsy, euro dj-ing. The whole crowd would still be there, if they only wouldn't have stopped playing! If you get a chance to see them in your area. GO! GO GO !!!!

Oh yea, when it sadly did end, they left the stage, they ended up again BEHIND US , jamming on the balcony. So, now the 15 of us up there were within touching distance to them, as they beat on their drums and horned out while we circled them!

Perhaps the best $18 I have ever spent in my whole life.

Otis Redding - 40th Anniversary of Plane Crash

Otis. Ahh Otis. A special ceremony was held to mark the 40th anniversary of the plane crash that killed legendary soul singer Otis Redding. On Dec. 10, 1967, a plane carrying Redding, his six-member band and the pilot crashed in Lake Monona, in Madison Wisconsin on its way to two shows at a Madison nightclub.

Although he was only 26 years old when he died, Redding still managed to amass a string of timeless hits, such as "Sitting on the Dock of the Bay," "Respect" and "Try a Little Tenderness." His early death, was a true loss to all of us. After 40 years, the sole survivor of the plane crash, musician Ben Cauley, said he returned to Madison for the first time since the tragedy.

A recent tribute movie/documentary Otis Reading, Dreams to Remember has been released. It includes film clips for a tv show, that was shot the day before he died. It also includes interviews by the ones that were closest to him and live footage of 16 of his greatest songs.

(Thanks to my friend Lou, who saved this poster after all these years. This was the concert poster he never made it to)

Rip Open Those Seat Cushions.... Long Lost White Stripes Missing Music

I'm a junker. Yes, it's true. My house is filled like a time victorian Cabinet of Curiosity, full of bits and fragments of history. I collect everything, old, unusual, wonderful. I'm a big fan of rust.

A recent post about the White Stripes, led me to the Wikipedia site about them. Let me just say as a collector of all things... (including music) I was enchanted... Did you know... That Jack White is a record collector ??!? Did you know that : his most rare recording has yet to be discovered. According to Jack White, he recorded an as-yet unheard song on a record. Jack White and Brian Muldoon hid 100 records in 100 pieces of furniture in 2004 in celebration of Muldoon's 25th year of upholstering furniture in Detroit. Says White, "we put 100 records in 100 pieces that year, and maybe, one day, they'll be found. This is a record no one has ever heard and maybe will never hear, but it's a nice time capsule. I'm sure a lot of upholsterers would open up a chair, pull out that record and throw it away, so that's the funny part about it."

If this story is true (which I can't verify) ...as a junker and music collector this is the holy grail of junking....

(start ripping the upholstery apart!)

Stax Records on PBS

(Concert poster for the Otis Redding concert, that he sadly never got to play. His plane went down in Lake Monona back on December 10, 1967 in Madison Wisconsin. Thanks to my friend Lou, for saving this concert poster for all these years, and bringing it to work one day, so I could take a picture of it.)

One night last week, on PBS I happened to come across a fab music documentary about STAX records. Alot of you most likely know about Stax Records, the Memphis blues/soul explosion, Americas Black Woodstock and the Otis Redding tragedy. For me, this was a whole new world of music information. I knew many of the pieces of this story, but I had no idea of the timeline and the music that came from a little company out of Memphis Tenn.

Here is just a brief list of the soul excitement that came from this little place:

Carla Thomas
Rufus Thomas
William Bell
The Mar-Keys
Booker T. & the MGs
Otis Redding
The Mad Lads
Sam and Dave
Eddie Floyd
Albert King
The Bar-Kays
Isaac Hayes
David Porter
Johnnie Taylor
Richard Pryor
Moms Mabley
Big Star
The Emotions
The Soul Children
The Staple Singers
Luther Ingram
The Temprees
Mel and Tim
Frederick Knight
Shirley Brown
The Dramatics
Soulive

What a great American story. I'm so happy to have seen it, but I'm more happy that someone thought this worthy of a documentary, many of the people involved are still alive, so alot of it was first hand accounts of the rollercoaster ride that STAX records took. Has anyone else seen the PBS documentary?

Save the RADIO--- URGENT HELP!!

WHY DOES EVERY RADIO STATION SOUND THE SAME ?????

Because they are all owned by the same company
.
.
.

This is a call out to ALL MOGGERS . As most of you know, American radio, has taken a turn for the worst over the last few years. In 1987 the FAIRNESS DOCTRINE was overturned by then President Reagan. It left the local public radio airways, which once belonged to all of us, to be bought up and be held hostage, by just a few owners such as CLEAR CHANNEL . That is why everytown, every station sounds the same.

Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT), along with Representatives Dennis Kucinich (D-OH), Maurice Hinchey (D-NY), and Louise Slaughter (D-NY) have announced their support of legislation which would reverse the 1987 FCC decision to restore the Fairness Doctrine.5

This is IMPORTANT TO ALL OF US .....the radiowaves need to go back into the hands of locals, who are willing to play regional, independent and local music.

Please, take a moment to call your local congressman. Tell them to RE-Instate the Fairness Doctrine-

(here is a link, in case you need their number)

http://www.house.gov/writerep/

PLEASE HELP SAVE RADIO ...
.
.
Before it's dead forever

Has Vinyl Died?

A dear older friend of mine, has collected more than 40,000+ records. He has been collecting music his whole entire life, more than 60 years. In the old days, he used to meet people from around the world, then convince them to "trade" records through the mail. He recently told me, that he never knew what he might get in his mail box. One week it would "Fiddler on the Roof" in Japaneese, the next week it could be children singing in Russian. The next week might be some rare jazz record from an underground bar in France. It was always a surprise. It was always fun and exciting!

A few years ago, he even published a book about the strange music that he had collected, he called it: Goldmine's Celebrity Vocals: Attempts at Musical Fame from 1500 Major Stars and Supporting Players, by Ron Lofman.

It's a book about semi-famous, sorta-famous, Paris Hilton types, who WANTed to be famous, people that tried to record something, anything!! Most if not all were pretty unsuccessful. (Think: David Hasselhoff, Roger Moore and Mussolini's son)

Times have changed, as for what he is going to do with his collection, he said he didn't know. He said values in the last few years have gone way down, dropped very badly, leaving many an independent record store and old time collector, with no place to turn. Lots of record shops have closed, alot of collectors are trying to liquidate their collections. eBay & iTunes also took a big slice of the fun away.

So, Rest in Peace our dear friend vinyl, you were loved and you will be missed. This new generation just doesn't love you the way we did.

Stephen Foster- A lost and Forgotten Friend

Some lazy mornings are filled with a cup of coffee and a newspaper. But not today. I woke up early, with a song in my head, a song I dreamt about last night. A simple melody that I can't put a name on, a song that is in my head somewhere. Where, I have no idea. Sometimes simple dreams can lead to great musical findings.

Early this morning I came across a sweet suprise of a cd, that I missed when it came out back in 2004. At the time back then, I was most likely listening to something else, and had just overlooked it. It's a award winning cd, of simple melodies written by Stephen Foster. Mr. Foster, born back in 1826 gave us such wonderful American classics as : Camptown Races, Old Black Joe, Swanee River, My Old Kentucky Home and Old Susanna to name just a few.

Perhaps I am horribly sentimental, or perhaps these American classics just seem to always stand the test of time. Whichever the case, these songs are our roots and they belong to all of us. American history is only a few hundred years old. But no one can ever say that its musical beginnings are not rich and beautiful.

Take a few minutes and check out this cd, here are a few of my favorites:

My Old Kentucky Home, Goodnight -John Prine
Gentle Annie-Ollabelle
In the Eye Abides the Heart - Beth Nielson Chapman

When the Road Bends A Gypsy Caravan

There is far more to come out of Eastern Europe these days, then vodka and old antiques. I recently viewed a smart little independent movie- at the local: WISCONSIN FILM FESTIVAL

... that left me with tears in my eyes, and a gypsy beat in my heart.

Gypsy Caravan is a movie about the history, life and legends of gypsy music- spanning the globe from India, Spain, Romania, Serbia and other lost Eastern European countries. These bands are a colorful, brash roudy group that take their music seriously and their partying hard. Gypsies have traveled long and far, and have carried their music with them throughout the world. They were nearly wiped out by the Nazi's, but their music and culture have lived on. All their languages may be different, but the songs all have the same message, a kind of Gypsy blues. An unorganized storytelling that has been passed on to families and sent adrift over many generations.

Organized on a world tour- this motley group of musicans, make you laugh and make you cry. Their sad stories will make your heart spill over and their music will make you want to dance in the aisles.

This documentary/music collection was directed and produced by Jasmine Dallal, and is the next Buena Vista Social Club (but with a bit more cigarettes and bit more naughtiness)

(My favorite of the groups was Fanfare Ciocarlia- an 11 piece brass band from Moldavia/Romania)

http://www.whentheroadbends.com

Look for it at the upcoming Seatle, Oregon, Washington DC & Nashville Film Festivals.
You will not be disappointed!! Best movie I've seen in a long time.

Raggae's Lost Secret Treasures...

Spring has sprung. Time to clean out the music collection, dust off some of the things you haven't heard lately. Or find some new music that puts a smile on your face and a skip in your step.

I have loved raggae for as long as I can remember. The solid rock steady beats, the sort of old crackling early recordings, that make you feel, that you to were there, in the 60's on the beaches of the island, smokin' a big fat joint, with a bunch of your new best friends.... (did that really happen or was that a dream?) I think it was dream, but I'm sure you get the drift. I recently came across a new raggae cd, a classic collection that I had not heard before, that made me so happy, I just have to share it with all of you. Now sit up and pay attention.

It's called:

THIS IS CRUCIAL RAGGAE -DJ's

That's right friends. Its the DJ's. The folks who brought you the spoken word, old school style. Way before rap and the like. This cd was compiled by Trojan records, who know their raggae. If you like raggae, but a bit tired or weary of what you have in your raggae collection, please check this one. It is SO SO SO GOOD .

1. Dennis Alcapone - DJ Choice
2. U-Roy - Way Down South
3. Prince Far-i - Heaavy Manners
4. Scotty - Draw your Brakes
5. Trinity- Freedom Style
6. Big Youth- Screaming Target
7. Ranking Dread- Marijuana In my Soul
8. Big Joe - Glitter Not Gold
9. Yah Woosh - Riding Melody
10. i-Roy - Blackman Time
11. Tapper Zurkie- Man Ah Warrior
12. Dillinger- Cocaine In my Brain

Happy Spring!

Some songs suck.
Really suck.
You think they are going to be G R E A T
Then they suck.
or
Have you ever downloaded a song by mistake?
It should have been good...
But it sucked.
Do you ever wish you could have all those dollars back?
Or was it a late night impulse?
Were you drunk and you woke up the next morning and you rolled out of bed, staggering over to the computer, you look at your lists and you see that the night before you bought:

What does War sound Like?

Friends,

I woke up this morning and thought, man we are at war. But as I looked out the window, cars kept driving by, the sun was shining, I turned on the TV and there was some cute little stories about cooking and another one about kittens.

When Vietnam war was happening, you can remember the music, we saw the images so the question to all of you music people is:

Where is all the Anti-War music?????

Can anyone remember the name of a really crazy rocker from the 90's, his music video shows him in a dirty tshirt, super greasy hair, dragging around a huge extension cord attached to a guitar, in a condemed looking house. ?

Christmas Singing World Record! (Damn you Medford, Mass.)

What: Attempt to break the world record for the largest number of people singing Christmas carols together.

Wausau, Wisconsin Area Events filled out an application, which Guinness accepted, that certified the city's intent to break the record. Because a Guinness official will not be on hand during the attempt, volunteers will act as marshals to ensure every person in the crowd is singing the projected 10 songs for the entire 20-minute time frame. Wausau also would need about 20 percent of its total population to make it work. As of Jan. 1, Wausau's population was 39,740

Last year, about 2,000 people gathered at the 400 block of Third Street in downtown Wausau to break the Guinness world record for greatest number of people singing a Christmas carol at the same time. The group, however, fell short of the 3,837 benchmark set by Medford, Mass., in December 2003.

"It's more important to get the community out there and enjoy what winter has to offer us," she said, adding that either way, with or without the record, "It's a win-win situation."

Maybe next year will bring better luck.

Chicago: Experimental Musican- Kills himself in the name of Peace

One of the most tragic stories I have ever heard. The sad thing is, it didn't even make the local Chicago news:

Malachi Ritscher

CHICAGO - Malachi Ritscher envisioned his death as one full of purpose. He carefully planned the detail, mailed one of his apartment key to a friend, created to-do lists for his family. On his Web site, the 52-year-old experimental musician who'd fought with depression even penned his obituary.

At 6:30 a.m. on Nov. 3 — four days before an election caused a seismic shift in Washington politics — Ritscher, a frequent anti-war protester, stood by an off-ramp in downtown Chicago near a statue of a giant flame, set up a video camera, doused himself with gasoline and lit himself on fire.

Aglow for the crush of morning commuters, his flaming body was supposed to be a call to the nation, a symbol of his rage and discontent with the U.S. war in Iraq.

"Here is the statement I want to make: if I am required to pay for your barbaric war, I choose not to live in your world. I refuse to finance the mass murder of innocent civilians, who did nothing to threaten our country," he wrote in his suicide note. "... If one death can atone for anything, in any small way, to say to the world: I apologize for what we have done to you, I am ashamed for the mayhem and turmoil caused by my country."

There was only one problem: No one was listening.

It took five days for the Cook County medical examiner to identify the charred-beyond-recognition corpse. Meanwhile, Ritscher's suicide went largely unnoticed. It wasn't until a reporter for an alternative weekly, the Chicago Reader, pieced the facts together that word began to spread.

Soon, tributes — and questions — poured in to the paper's blogs.

Was this a man consumed by mental illness? Or was Ritscher a martyr driven by rage over what he saw as an unjust war? Was he a convenient symbol for an anti-war movement or was there more to his message?

"This man killed himself in such a painful way, specifically to get our attention on these things," said Jennifer Diaz, a 28-year-old graduate student who never met him but has been researching his life. Now, she is organizing protests and vigils in his name. "I'm not going to sit by and I can't sit by and let this go unheard."

Mental health experts say virtually no suicides occur without some kind of a diagnosable mental illness. But Ritscher's family disagrees about whether he had severe mental problems.

In a statement, Ritscher's parents and siblings called him an intellectually gifted man who suffered from bouts of depression. They stopped short of saying he'd ever received a clinical diagnosis of mental illness.

"He believed in his actions, however extreme they were," his younger brother, Paul Ritscher, wrote online. "He believed they could help to open eyes, ears and hearts and to show everyone that a single man's actions, by taking such extreme personal responsibility, can perhaps affect change in the world."

His son, who shares the same name as his father, said his father was trying to cope with mental illness. Suicide seemed to be the next step, and the war was a way to give his death meaning.

"He was different people at different instances and so, so erratic. I loved him no doubt, but he was a very lonely and tragic man," said Ritscher, 35, who is estranged from the rest of the family. "The idea of being a martyr I'm sure was attractive. He could literally go out in a blaze of glory."

Born in Dickinson, N.D., with the name Mark David, Ritscher dropped out of high school, married at 17 and divorced 10 years later. Eventually, he would change his name to match his son's and, coincidentally, a world-famous prophet. At the end, he worked in building maintenance and was a fixture in Chicago's experimental music scene.

He described himself as a renaissance man who'd amassed a collection of more than 2,000 musical recordings from clubs in Chicago. He was a writer, philosopher and photographer. He was an alcoholic who collected fossils, glass eyes, light bulbs and snare drums. He paid $25 to become an ordained minister with the Missionaries of the New Truth and operated a handful of Web sites protesting the Iraq war.

A member of Mensa who claimed to be able to recite the infinite number Pi to more than 1,000 decimal places, he titled his obituary "Out of Time." Friends, who seemed surprised about his death, found themselves searching for answers. Ritscher's death became even more enigmatic than his life.

Perhaps the most famous self-immolation occurred in 1963, when Buddhist monk Thich Quang Duc burned himself at a Saigon intersection in protest against the south Vietnamese regime. Another activist, Kathy Change, lit fire to herself in 1996 at the University of Pennsylvania to protest the government and the country's economic system.

Ritscher's death brought back memories for Anita King, a 48-year-old artist from West Philadelphia who was Change's best friend.

"I think both of them, they just felt like their death could be the last drop of blood shed," King said. "It was too hard for them. They had too much of a conscious connection to the struggle to go on in their lives."

In the end, only Ritscher knew the motivations for his suicide. There is little doubt, though, that he was satisfied with his choice.

"Without fear I go now to God," Ritscher wrote in the last sentence of his suicide note. "Your future is what you will choose today."

(from the associated press)

Any mogger from Chicago, ever get a chance to see him play????

I think its time for a musican to sit in the White House.

A musician to represent us.

This is our chance. 2008 is open to anybody, I think we should stand by a musical artist, to represent all of us as a nation.

Who would you seriously vote for????

In all honesty, which one, would do the best job and cares about issues that are important to you?

Here are your choices: (please pick one)

Whens the last time you heard some Van Morrison????

While at work today someone put in a cd by Van Morrison and I have to say, its been such a long long time since I heard him, it felt rather good. Not just good, but great. It's was a rainy foggy day, so his music was perfect for the spirit, smart lyrics nice melodies, a good day to daydream on your job. Not many people here on Mog mention him, so I thought it would be a nice autumn tribute to the Irish poet/songwriter who makes many evenings warmer with his songs.

Van Morrison, though somewhat popular, has never gained the same name recognition that Dylan or Clapton have gotten over the years. So as fans, we are kind of lucky, because his music has never gotten overplayed, overused or overdone. You don't hear his music in elevators, or stores, or even on commercials. Happily, because of this his music is crisp, fresh, and sounds nearly brand new each and everytime you hear it.

While researching Van Morrison, I have found, that he is listed now in so many genres, his music can be appreciated by so many types of people. (Or nobody knows for sure, where to put him???) So a little Van goes a long way.
Itunes lists him in:
Rock
Vocal
Pop
Funk
Blues-Rock
Contemporary Blues
Rock and Roll
Singer/Songwriter
Soft Rock
R&B
Soul
Contemporary Celtic
Adult Contemporary
Folk-Rock
Pop/Rock
Arena Rock
Roots Rock
Jazz
Electric
Blues
Southern Rock
Adult Alternative
Urban Cowboy
Contemporay Country

24 Catagories!!!! I think that is quite a list for one single man to do over a span of a career. If you get a chance, listen to a little Van today. It will make you feel good, I promise.

Do you remember the first time you heard him?

Batteries Plus and your Dead iPod....

Hello Friends,

This is not a commerical, I'm just ticked that I found this out, like a week to late.

I just found out, after the huge hassle of sending my iPod off for open heart surgery, waiting for the diagnosis, (yep dead battery, we need to open her up)

That I could have bought a battery and the dumb surgical little tool to open the iPod up at my local Batteries Plus for under $30. (Plus they will even do the surgery if you ask them nicely)

I'm bummed, I could have saved 2 weeks, plus $100.
So I thought I would pass this on to you.
I thought Batteries Plus was where you get your car battery. Who knew they had little ipod hearts in there- thumping away.

Your Friend,
MissJunk

Take this Job and Shove it!

Life is kind of funny. About 25 minutes ago my teenager (shes 17) got home from work and she was crying. She wants to quit her job, because she found a wallet at work that a customer had dropped in the Pizza place she makes her living at. One of her good friends opened the wallet and started to count the money and was trying to figure out how to divide it among all the workers that were standing there at the time (it was around $300) My daughter flipped out, and said "You can't keep this!" and everyone got mad at her and wouldn't talk to her for the rest of the night.

So, she wants to quit, because she said "How can I ever trust any of these people ever again???" Anyway- we were just talking about how shitting some people can be, how people are tempted to do bad things all the time, and sometimes it takes just one person to stand up and say "NO". Sadly, I think she is going to quit anyway. So in honor of my offspring:

Did you know that "TAKE THIS JOB AND SHOVE IT " was done by:

Johnny Paycheck
The True Brothers
Willie Nelson
David Allan Coe
Billy Joe Royal
Buck Owens
&
The Dead Kennedy's

And sometimes you just have to stand up and say NO.

The 5 Minute Movie / Video -- KINO

I recently became part of group called KINO . Kino is a group of super low budget indy film makers, who enjoy making movies and homemade videos. There are Kino chapters all over the world. Most likely one near you!

The object of KINO is every month you get a Word or a Theme. Then you have 30 days to make a 5 minute movie on that word or theme. Then once a month, the group gets together at an old movie house in your area- and show the movies back to back. All movies are 5 minutes or less, so showing them together takes around an hour.

Some movies are Music Videos, some people do claymation, some are art pieces, some are comedies... some are wonderful - some are horrible- but they are all fun to watch.

We recently met this French Canadian Kino guy who uses an old 1930s camera and makes these beautiful 5 minute movies - he uses his bathtub to develop the film because the film is so big. Check out:

http://www.kino00.com/media/1106_education_nautique.mov

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tuCJyth0Ufo

So if you are an Indy group looking to make a video, or you just like to fool around with your video camera and editing software on your computer - everybody at every level is welcome.

http://www.wis-kino.com/kino.htm
http://kino00.com/index.php?s=planete
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2tqHy32MTW8

You can use the word KINO in your search and you can get great videos on youtube!

Da Yoopers, Blaze Orange and Dead Deer....

One day, I corrected a friend by saying that I didn't live in the Midwest- I live in the Upper Midwest. Northern Minnesota, Northern Wisconsin and Upper Michigan all have something in common.... the way we talk.... some say we talk funny.... others don't seem to notice... others say that the movie "Fargo" was overkill. I say, have ya' been to da U. P. hey? You can blame it on our roots of Swedes, Finns and Norwegians- the language and accents are still here- and I'm not ashamed.

As whole families of men and young boys (and yes folks, young boys can get out of school to go and hunt) drink beer while driving in their trucks, and journey out into the cold dark woods to deer camp. With their hunting orange clothes on, holding shiney guns in their hands like badges of great pride, they takeover the fields and the woods for 2 weeks in the fall, to find that crazy deer.

So with great pride to my upbringing, I want to share with you,

da yoopers

They are a local band from the U. P. (that would be the Upper Pennisula of Michigan that is attached to the top of Wisconsin) Most of their music is hokey, catchy, deer huntin', trash talkin', spittin', poopin in the woods type of music. Its generally played on the radio around here during hunting season. It's both awful and fun at the same time....

Some of my favorites....

Second Week of DeerCamp
30 Point Buck
Free Beer
Rusty Chevrolet
Don't Goose the Moose
Grandpa got run over by a BeerTruck

David Hyman for President

I like most of you, love music. I like to find new stuff, hear new beats and find new and amazing bands.

But finding new music was for me, becoming a full time job. Hunting, collecting, listening to, reading reviews. I'm not sure about you, but I simply didn't seem to have the time, that I wish I had to devote to this new found hobby of musical sharing and gathering. It seemed that 24 hours in a day, was just not enough time to do it all.... But, nonetheless, I knew I could never ever go back to radio, because it had become so awful and downright mind numbing. So what was a girl to do?

Then one day while waiting in the dentist office. I happened upon a tiny little article in a Newsmagazine about the "MOG" universe. Writing MOG on my hand in ballpoint pen, I later sat down at my laptop and entered a new world of music that changed my life.

In just a few minutes everyday, I learned that I can stay connected with the musical world, from the confines of my pajama's at my own kitchen table, lost among the cornfields of the central United States. I can link up with other like-minded (or not so like minded people) and share musical stories and newly found music from thousands of miles away. It has changed my world and music for me - in so many great ways.

Thanks David Hyman-
Thanks for changing our world.

(David Hyman For President bumper stickers will be available soon- please drop me message, if you would like one)

Music.... is it the new Collectible?

I am a huge antique & junk collector. I love cool old stuff. Books, paintings, artwork, folkart, weird stuff. Things with a history, things that have been around the world 100 years before me. Things that were lovingly collected by someone else a generation or two before I came along.

My friends and I go out looking for stuff all the time, estate sales, antique shops etc. We have been asking ourselves lately, "where are all the young people??" The people selling all the junk at flea markets and shops are way old. The people buying old cookie jars, pottery, vintage furniture are all over 35. So what has happened to the next generation? What are they buying? Where are there???

It came to me last night, its MUSIC ! In this iPod generation, it seems we are all swapping music like kids did baseball cards 50 years ago, like young people did with beanie babies just 10 years ago. We are spending our extra income on music.

Music seems the next newest thing to obtain and swap. We are waiting patiently for the newest and best cds to come out. Plus due to ease, many more people seem to be getting active within online music communities of all ages. Just yesterday I was talking to a 14 year old! While Max is my favorite mogger and musical source and he is just 15!!

So while we all sit back and look at the little tracker at the bottom of our iTunes with how many songs we have collected. and while we reorganize our playlists to be wonderful and fullfilling. Just think, what a cool time we are living in.

(iPods weigh alot less than my dads old 78's)
(for those of you really young- 78's are vinyl but really really thick and heavy)

Mezzanine Owls .... nice surprise......

Sometimes, surprises come in small packages. I recently by accident came across the Mezzanine Owls. Didn't think much at first, just sounded like another new indie alternative band trying to do the repeat thing of days gone by. I down loaded a song or two, which have been in my rotation for a little while. Everytime they come up, I have to look over at the iPod to see who it is, and I'm happy to say, it keeps on being MEZZANINE OWLS . Their debut release from this year popped out in September. I'm sure glad I didn't miss it. It keeps being a new suprise over and over again.

The cd is called Slingshot Echos, and it is a nice blend of moody alternative with a twist of gravely poetry. I enjoyed:
"Moving Ground" & "Coyote" & "Counting Backwards"

I haven't been able to find out much info about them, anybody know anything?

Has anyone heard of the BOOTY TAPES?

This is the story:

Michigan is known for lots of stuff: Cars, Cereal, Motown, Michael Moore and now a cassette tape stumbled upon on a street in Ypsilanti.

A guy named Nigel Morgan discovered the unmarked tape laying on the ground near a dumpster, which contained a string of one-minute songs with synthesizers, drum machines and digitally-altered vocals all with one theme: the buttocks. The tape was circulated around Michigan for two years, then around the nation. College students were passing it on and on to each other and it became an underground party hit. The "booty" songs were easy to sing to, quite fun and infectious.

The tape was then passed on to Davy Rothbart at FOUND magazine.
Check it out....

https://store.quackmedia.com/found/index.php?crn=209

Am I the Only One who Hates the Beatles??

Yes it is true.
I may be the only mogger in history to openly say that I hate the Beatles.

From everyone I have ever talked to in my entire life:

Yes, I know you think they were the best.
Yes, I also know that they had a huge range and they kept reinventing themselves.
Yes, I also know that they have sold more albums worldwide than anybody.
Yes, I also know that they changed music as we know it.

BUT , it does not mean that I have to like them.

Back when I was in the 5th grade in the mid 70's, my older sister went on vacation. When she got back, she surprised me with a gift.

She said: "Here I brought you a present..."
I was like: "wooo hoo, a present!"
I opened it and I was like... who are all these ugly harry guys?

It was my first impression of the Beatles and my newly gotten "LET IT BE " lp.

I cracked it open and listened and I was like ...yuck...what a sucky present.

It's now 25 years later. I guess I was born to late. I missed the whole Beatles hyped up thing. Missed their whole sucess story. The ups and downs. The whole Beatles history. Missed it, don't care.

Can one bad musical gift, really ruin a band forever??
Am I the only one out here, who is just a bit sick of hearing about the Beatles?

Metal - A Headbangers Journey

Are you a closet Headbanger?

Just out in someplaces, Metal - A Headbangers Journey is a rock documentary about the history of heavy metal music and it's fans-

THIS IS MUST SEE for anybody who loves music. Written by Sam Dunn, an anthropoligist and heavy metal fan. It takes you on a historical journey of metal music, it's roots, plus its strange and twisted future (if the new Norwegian heavy metal rockers don't scare the shit out of you, then you were not paying attention...)

http://www.metalhistory.com/

Music To Change the World with....

It's the day after.

These are some words written by Woody Guthrie.
They never felt so good.
Enjoy.....

This land is your land, this land is my land
From California, to the New York Island
From the redwood forest, to the gulf stream waters
This land was made for you and me

As I was walking a ribbon of highway
I saw above me an endless skyway
I saw below me a golden valley
This land was made for you and me

Chorus

I've roamed and rambled and I've followed my footsteps
To the sparkling sands of her diamond deserts
And all around me a voice was sounding
This land was made for you and me

Chorus

The sun comes shining as I was strolling
The wheat fields waving and the dust clouds rolling
The fog was lifting a voice come chanting
This land was made for you and me

Chorus

As I was walkin' - I saw a sign there
And that sign said - no tress passin'
But on the other side .... it didn't say nothin!
Now that side was made for you and me!

Chorus

In the squares of the city - In the shadow of the steeple
Near the relief office - I see my people
And some are grumblin' and some are wonderin'
If this land's still made for you and me.

The secret lost music of Fado....

I was sitting in the hospital recently, with someone that I love. An unexpected emergency brought us both there together. As I sat and waited and read magazine after bad worn out magazine waiting for any news, I had a wonderful long conversation with a male nurse from Brazil. He had come to America about 4 years ago. American hospitals, as I found out, are DESPERATE for nurses. So much so, that they are looking elsewhere. He answered a help wanted ad in a Rio newspaper, it had brought him and 25 other Brazilian souls to our shores. To care for those of us, who for one reason or another needed a bit of help or medical attention.

As I sat and waited, we had a lovely and engaging discussion of Brazilian music. I've always loved world music, one of my favorites is Bossa Nova, the latin jazz of Brazil that was huge in the 1950's and 60's. He then asked me if I had ever heard of Fado... I hadn't .... fado, which translates as "A Longing" is having a huge resurgence among young Portuguese women artists and folk singers.

During the 15th and 16th centuries Portugal was know for it's explorers. We all know the stories, those men, who climbed upon wooden vessels to sail the high seas. Risking life and limb to find new discoveries to bring back to their kings and queens. Fado is what was left behind. The women who waited. It was sung by those who stood on the banks of the waters edge, as I was told, who sang out love songs to the sea, for their lost loves. Most, would never be heard from again. Fado- sounds gypsy like at first, crude and simple. But its the roots that wrap around your heart. It pulls you in close and brings tears to your eyes. In some parts of Lisbon where it is played, no food can be served during Fado singing. It is sacred.

check out:

Mariza

Ramana Vieira
Christina Branco

Sigur Ros

A fellow mogger, (whose mog handle I forgot- sorry) told me to check out Sigur Ros a while ago. I attempted to find them once, but couldn't... but on this cold and snowy day, I realized, I need to find some new music. So I again started the hunt. As burly men in blaze orange who go into the woods with their rifles and young sons in tow, I too, put on a sweater and started to internet scavenge and delve into some indie music that I might have missed.... and so it happened, that I came across Sigur Ros.

I've been to Iceland. It's very cold and very dark. Though those both sound like bad things,in Iceland, it just puts a spell over you. If you ever get a chance to travel, it is a great place to spend a weekend. It's surprisingly close and cheap. Other than some of the best shopping and people watching experiences outside of the European mainland that I have seen, it is a world away from anything you have ever experienced. So it was no surprise to find out Sigur Ros hailed from this dark and hip part of the universe. Their songs are long and loose. Full of endless possibilites, where you don't know where they will take you next. Like a musical train ride through the mountains. Where each turn of the train car, leads you to another amazingly beautiful view, one turn after another, each song better than the one before.

Try: "Vaka" and "the Nothing song"

Feist is really a musical Feast.....

Not to often does music come along that makes you want to swing and sway....and humm along. Then along came Feist and the whole world changed.

Picture in your head a basement club somewhere at night. A bunch of drifters and smokers and young types, old enough to smoke, but not old enough to enjoy the healthy good workings of a pair of solid lungs. But no worries, it will all be worth it. Up at the stage stands a girl. When she opens her mouth, you can hardly believe it. Husky and high in tempo, it nearly makes your heart hurt to hear it. Achingly beautiful. A siren in disguise. If you at all are looking to be surprised or looking for something new, try this new sound from Canada.

The latest album-
Let it die---- try "Secret Heart" and "Mushaboom"

Can Opera Music be Cool and Sexy?

Once upon a time, not very long ago, I was sitting with some friends, having some cocktails. When all of a sudden, the most wonderful music began to fill my ears. It was a like a dream, it just poured into my soul and felt so good. It was sultry, sexy and bit like sitting on large soft musical cloud. Who would have ever thought that Opera music could be so...... ummm erotic?

Coco de Mer, (the French name means a large island nut, which shape is very female in form) was put together by New York musical talent Adam Plack. He has carefully woven jazz/r&b with some of Operas most classical scores to create a listening experience like no other.

Peace Zombies

Evolution of ourselves is happening right before our eyes.

Can you imagine a world, where all the young people at a peace march or anti-war demonstration, are walking around with their ipods buds tucked gently in their ears? Marching to the beat of their own music and their own feelings. It happened here recently at a local protest. The older retired hippies were yelling/chanting to people and cars passing by, while the young people had their ipods on. Marching on, but not saying much. Physically involved, but their hearts were not in it.

Has the greatest thing to happen to us in music, this wonderful little box, no bigger than a pack of smokes, turned us all into walking zombies?

Songs for Peace 2006

Let's just take a moment, close our eyes and pretend that this is the 1960s.

If this were the 60's and we were all about peace, harmony and love.... what songs would we be listening to?

Dylan?
Guthrie?
Joplin?
So my question is,who is the voice of this generation.
Who is speaking to us, like nobody else?

Where is this voice?????
Is he singing softly or is it that I just can't hear him?

Musical Seasons

They keep falling.
Piles and piles of them.
First one,
than a million and one.

As the days get shorter, the evenings get cooler and if you walk out on the grass in the morning, you might find a new surprise of frozen wet dew.... Its time to pack up the shorts and the flip-flops. Summer music festivals have come to a sad quick screeeeching halt. Listening to summer music seems all wrong. To perky, to cheerful, to happy- to ... sunny....

As you pull out sweaters and sweatshirts, mittens and scarves, do you think, that as the seasons change, our musical choices change as well? Do we all fall into our nice winter rut of music? Like mashed potatoes and gravy.... Do we all fall back on our old favorites when the nights seem to be getting longer?

Here are some of my favorite comfort music/food choices:

1. The Best of John Lee Hooker (mashed potatoes and gravy)
2. Blues Brothers Soundtrack (hot soup and warm bread)
3. Billy Bragg & Wilco (gypsy stew)
4. Blind Boys of Alabama (corn bread muffins for breakfast)
5. The Essential Charlie Parker (hot cider- spiked with anything)

It's kind of a blues/jazz mix- not sure why, maybe it's perhaps with all the falling leaves, or maybe it just puts me in a good frame of mind to wind down the year.... which ever the reason- seasons are about change and change is good.

Ok Ok Ok.
I'm kind of curious.
Concert Tshirts anyone?- ok moggers, who has the most?

Is there any that you are quite fond of or you stole off a dead body somewhere?
It would make a great book-
The history and lives of Concert Tshirts.....

Would you ever pay $300+ for a used one?

Concert Reviews: Mars Volta, Lamb of God, Opeth, Megadeth

I have a music crazy teen. (Wonder where she gets that from??? No idea)

When she mentioned that there would be some concerts in the near future, I didn't realize that they would all land in the same week.

This is her review:

This is the line up:

Smile Empty Soul- in Peoria ($5)
Quick Review: Tasty ribs- on the riverfront- small band, great concert going. Enjoyed the concert way more than their cds. Good live show, that fed off of the audience. (except when they nearly quit half way through the show due to throwing of beer bottles) They hadn't been on tour for 11 months, so we were the first to hear their new stuff. Which was fun.

Ran into a bunch of guys as we were walking towards the concert. They said "excuse me" - then walked on.
Laughed later, when I realized they were the band....

Tool - Madison ($40)
Sadly Maynard became ill and concert was cancelled. No review.
I AM VERY BUMMED

Gigantour 2006 Opeth - ($30) Rave /Milwaukee
Arrived at the Rave for the start of Opeth. Not a good concert band. The crowd was not at all interested in them, because they were headlining another band. So most in the crowd didn't take them to seriously. They attempted to put on a good show. The singer was quite funny and made the crowd laugh- which made them more entertaining then their music.
Lamb of God- ($30) Rave/Milwaukee
Intense. The drummer was spectacular! The joy of the show. This was a concert that people saved their postions for. No leaving, no going to the bathroom, no going to get a water. People were planted in their spots. Which was fun, unless you wanted to get ahead. In which case, NO LUCK . If you were a die-hard Lamb of God fan, you were not disappointed. The music went through you and made the moshing something that just had to be done.
Great band, great sound and except getting a cigarette burn on my chin from some stupid drunk guy in a blue shirt, I loved it.
Megadeth ($30) Rave/Milwaukee
Powerful show. Great bass.... enjoyed the music very much. Everything you would expect from a Megadeth concert, but 10-fold. Didn't know much about Megadeth, but was pleasantly surprised. They sparked a new interest for me, its hard to not respect good guitar playing.

Mars Volta- ($30) Rave/Milwaukee
Ahhh, I thought the best would be last. Looking forward to all week, but not the best concert of the week. A little disappointed in the show. Sound quality was not so great. Couldn't here the vocalist enough, which was kind of bummer. But still they put on an awesome show-

Stayed tuned - more concert reviews to come,
H.A.O.B.
(next month GodSmack and Evanescense)

October Project & Autumn Songs

Its fall. Autumn. I time to wrap yourself up in warm sweaters and blankets. The leaves are changing and so are my musical choices. I'm looking for a few good Autumn songs to put together a little mix for an upcoming road trip..... through the woods and around the bend... to enjoy the colors....

I found October Project about 10 years ago, they were a nice little band, with harmonies so wonderful and new, it was a refreshing and fun new thing to listen to. I've recently "found" them again--

(They now have a new lead singer and have renamed themselves, November Project....)

I'm not going to go on some political rant. Though I could.
I'm not going to share my political beliefs with you.

Though I can tell you, that I like nature, old people, young people, college aid, social security, innercity development, seeds that are seeds.

So I was trying to think of songs, today that represent peace.

1. Peace Train- Cat Stevens
2. Imagine- John Lennon
3. Where have all the flowers gone- Pete Seeger
4. Let there be Peace on Earth
5. Blowin in the Wind
6. Whats so Funny about Peace Love and Understanding
7. Rockin in the Free World - Neil Young
8. Get up Stand Up - Bob Marley
9. Bullet in the Blue Sky- U2
10.

Call it Democracy
By Bruce Cockburn

padded with power here they come
international loan sharks backed by the guns
of market hungry military profiteers
whose word is a swamp and whose brow is smeared
with the blood of the poor

who rob life of its quality
who render rage a necessity
by turning countries into labour camps
modern slavers in drag as champions of freedom
sinister cynical instrument
who makes the gun into a sacrament --

the only response to the deification
of tyranny by so-called "developed" nations'
idolatry of ideology
north south east west
kill the best and buy the rest
it's just spend a buck to make a buck
you don't really give a flying fuck
about the people in misery

IMF dirty MF
takes away everything it can get
always making certain that there's one thing left
keep them on the hook with insupportable debt
see the paid-off local bottom feeders
passing themselves off as leaders
kiss the ladies shake hands with the fellows
open for business like a cheap bordello

and they call it democracy
and they call it democracy
and they call it democracy
and they call it democracy

see the loaded eyes of the children too
trying to make the best of it the way kids do
one day you're going to rise from your habitual feast
to find yourself staring down the throat of the beast
they call the revolution
IMF dirty MF
takes away everything it can get
always making certain that there's one thing left
keep them on the hook with insupportable debt

The biggest Musical Trap

As I was driving along the cornfields.....

Another funny thing has been happening. Central Illinois radio stations, as I have found out, kind of suck. Suck big and suck bad. Not to many choices in the cornfield heartland of America.

Lately, I'll be driving down the road, scanning for something new and musical on the old car radio. Then I would happen across a new great song. A lovely song. A sweet love song. Oh...how nice, this guy has some passion in his voice. How nice to hear passion. He loves somebody. Wow, thats nice, he's in love. He can't help his feelings they just seem to pour out of him, He is so in.... L O V E ........

.......... with Jesus.

Yes folks, Jesus.

Now, I'm not 100% against Jesus.I just don't like being trapped into Jesus music. Everytime this happens, I quickly stop humming along, and in horror flip off the radio. I find myself freaked out and bamboozled. Cheated. Caught again in their religious musical fishing net, that I'm afraid if I get caught in, I will never be able to be set free of. This keeps happening - and I keep getting freaked out.

I honestly, am pro-music of all kinds but i'm also pro-choice of music. I just don't think Contemporary Christian Radio is fair, because sometimes, as I have found out recently, they are the only choice in some places to listen to. There is nothing else.... and I find that a bit disturbing.

Mark Knopfler is my Big SURPRISE.....

One day as I was driving along the cornfields........

First let me say, that I have never been a Dire Straits fan. Ever. I've never owned any, never bought any, never saved my nickels and dimes to acquire some. When they were big 20 years ago, they were constantly being played on the radio, played on Mtv, listened to on every jukebox, brought out at every party.... They became quickly over saturated. I would compare them to Dave Matthews of this generation. On all the time, everywhere.

(Rest in Peace- Hootie- overplaying killed you too)

So recently when I asked "Who's that???" to someone being played on the local college radio station....
My husband laughed at me, (He.... by the way only has 6 songs on his little iPod). He then informed me it was Mark Knopfler.

Again, I was like "Who?"
He laughed at me again and said, "The lead singer from Dire Straits"

May I say, this song was very good....it was very very good. So good in fact that I hurried home and looked it up on itunes right away and bought it. Then, continued and bought all of his solo stuff. The song I heard was called a "Song for Sonny Liston" it comes off a cd called -One Take Radio Sessions. I've listened to the whole thing and they are all wonderful. Each and every song. It was a nice and pleasant surprise.

.....and there is more....

Something even yummier, is a solo cd he did with Emmylou Harris. It came out a little while ago and is a great collection of Texas twangy, roadhouse music, music you want to listen to over and over again.

A nice musical selection, that was found in a Illinois cornfield....
mmmm....pass the salt & butter...
its yummy.

Music Memories

Memory
and
Time
Keeps
Ticking
By
Tick
Tick
Tick
Each
Song
Is
A
Tick
in
our
Life

Did you ever stop to think that maybe our little iTunes lists, are just little itty bitty time capsules of ourselves. Each song collected, is like a bit of each one of us. I jokingly told a friend of mine recently that when they send me off to the old age home. Just always keep me plugged into my ipod. The next generation of iPod accessories are going to be things that can attach to our oxygen tanks and our adjustable beds- so we can always stay plugged in. There will even be one, that we can hang around our necks so we can hit the RED CROSS button for the ambulance, or hit the musical note to hear the last song played : Billy Idols - White Wedding for the 44th time. ( We're old, we keep forgetting we heard in 43 times before)

Our lists make up who we are. When I first joined the Mog Blog I blushed a bit, because some of my songs on my iTunes list were, how shall we say it? Bad? Terribly bad, late night impulse iTunes purchases. (My first two iTunes purchases were "Turning Japanese and One Night in Bankok")

But after thinking about it for a while, I have come to realize that they are not bad, they are me. Each awful bad song represents a part of me and a happy memory:

1. Cher- Gypsy Tramps Thieves
= road trip in high school singing this in the car with my girlfriends

2. Anything by They Might be Giants
= Old boyfriend who played them on his cassette player over and over and over

3. Fiddler on the Roof
=Jewish Heritage or lack there of

4. Weird Al -The Ebay Song
= Ebay (need I say more??)

5. n'sync
=first song my daughter sang to in the car when she was little

6. Tears for Fears (all songs)
=staying up really late in high school, in the dark, trying to see how far my little fm radio could reach from my little bedroom in central Wisconsin (New York, Seattle, Austin) That was the first time I heard Tears for Fears

7. KC & the Sunshine Band
=Staying at my cousins house in Milwaukee for a week in the summer. Their neighbor had the LP- we listened to it while roller skating every day.

8. AC/DC (all)
= other High School boyfriends who drove to fast, listening to this in their cars and me thinking why am in this car?- Is he going to kill me going this fast? My dad is going to KILL me if he finds out we were going 100mph.

9. Celine Dion
=Breakup song--- bad breakup - many tears-

10. Beasty Boys- Girls
=Party song, my friend drank her drink out of her high heeled pump on a bet, at one of the skankiest places in town.... where at bartime everybody ended up on top of the tables dancing. (Recently torn down, prime location to build condos)

Just think....
Every songs means something to US.
Each one is another tick of time
Inside our little musical souls

Know It All Boyfriends / Garbage

Do you like Garbage?
Do you like Freedy Johnston?
If you combine them both together what do get??

The Know-It-All-Boyfriends
Of course!!!!

If you are at all a Garbage fan, or a Freedy Johnston fan. Or you feel the need just to rock a bit,we here in Madison Wisconsin are blessed to have the "KNOW-IT-ALL-BOYFRIENDS" as part of our local scenery. This is a very unusual motley group of local guys which include Butch Vig and Duke Erikson of Garbage, plus Freedy Johnston who does guitar and vocals, they add a few random friends and get together a few times a year for a jam, with all the proceeds going to charity.

It's a rowdy group of guys, who take jamming to the next level, they love the crowd, and the local crowd loves them. They generally play small clubs and bars with only a few hundred people.

Local rumors are swimming around that another show might be coming up in September-- they don't advertise much- it's a word of mouth thing....but I'll keep you posted- if your in the Southern Wisconsin area, it's way worth checking out.

It's one of Madisons best kept local secrets....

Stuck on Soul...... (part II)

Soul.
Soul.
Soul.
Small word. Big impact.

I'm still having a Soul induced lovefest this week. Can't seem to stop thinking about that kind of music. I've been asking people I work with, random people on the street, the guy that handed me my tacos in the drive through....

Where did all the soul go?

Have you ever been up late at night. Had some soul on by candlelight. It's so full of energy (some might say sexual energy) If you just close your eyes and listen, its passionate, smokey, heartfelt and speaks of a time, when the most important thing to do was love the one you were with or feel the pain of them long gone. You can feel the love right down to your core. It's hard for us to put it into words, but they did it thoughtfully and tenderly. They sang it to us, like we were the only ones in the room to hear it.

Here are some more of my favorites....
(I'm sorry I missed Aretha the first time)

1. Aretha Franklin- I've never loved a Man the way I love you
2. Curtis Mayfield- Gypsy Woman
3. Sam Cooke- I love you
4. Sam Baker-Sunny
5. Commodores- Sweet Love
6.King Floyd- I Really Love You
7. Earth Wind & Fire- Can't Hide Love
8. The Bar-Kays- Soul Finger
9.
Where are all the Soul Brothers?

Times come and times go. I was planning on writing a great little ditty on my mog-blog about Buddy Miles (my hero). Buddy played drums for Jimi Hendrix, Santana and most of us have heard his work a million times on commercials and jingles, but I'm sure most people could never put a voice/face/drummer with that amazing sound. He is a true legend of our time.

That would be Buddy Miles. The afro haired, star spangled drummer from Jimi Hendrix.

I was bumping around the internet searching for some great information about Buddy to share with MOG and I found this interesting little website called: Soul-Patrol.com. So I put Buddy on the back burner for a few....

Soul Patrol opens its website by saying, "Where are all the Black voices??" I had to stop for a minute and think..... Outside of rap and Usher, I couldn't think of any. None. Where is the Marvin Gaye or Al Green of this generation? Who is the slick love rocket of now. Who is putting out lovin' music- that makes a lady want to melt into her mans arms and hang onto him all night long??? Was I that far removed from Soul music to not know anybody? I know about rappers. They are constantly being advertised and promoted, but what about their brothers, the crooners of love?

Have record companies really not promoted Black Soul Music in the last 20 years??? According to United States census reports for 2000, 12% of Americans are black and I'm guessing, but I'm not sure- they all can't like rap. I personally don't like it, (though, I do like Snoop as an actor.) Some would say, "that I just don't get it" and thats true enough. Rap just doesn't speak to me the way Barry White does.... maybe I'm old, maybe I'm just a sentimental lady or maybe I'm both. But come on record execs, give us a black male voice that sings to our hearts the way that Otis does. Melts us and wails to us about his heart bein' broken. Please spend some money- and promote some LOVIN '

Here is a quick list of some of my favorite soul songs.....mmmmm...

1. Stevie Wonder- When I fall in Love it will be Forever
1.01 Otis Redding- That's how strong my Love is
2. Delfonics- You're Gone
3. Aaron Neville- Tell it like it is
4. Ben E. King- Spanish Harlem
5. Al Green- Let's Stay Together
6. Brothers Johnson- Strawberry Letter 23
7. Delfonics- Didn't I blow your Mind this time
8. The Main Ingredient- Everybody Plays the Fool
9. The Ohio Players- Fire
10. Sam & Dave- Hold on I'm comin'
11. Major Lance- um, um, um, um, um, um

Please check out The Best of Buddy Miles-
every song is great
and it makes you just want to bob your head and groove......

Could there really be a Radio Paradise?

The sun smiled down upon me
The birds sung sweetly
A soft breeze swept through my hair
Time stopped and stood still
Breathless

Could I be this lucky?
Could my bad radio days really be over?
Would I ever have to listen to bad radio again?
Ever?
Could this be true?
No bad dj's?
No bad jokes?
No bad commercials?
Have I gone to heaven?
Nope.
I've found Radio Paradise.

Independent. Commerical free radio. Listener supported. Best of all, it plays lots of new great music, that you couldn't hear anywhere else. Not to much repeat and you get to hear music from around the world and the local band from down the street. You never know what you will hear next, and it's all good.

Give it a whirl- you may never go back to the old radio ever again.....

http://www.radioparadise.com/

Misheard Lyrics....

Most of you might already know about this website, but in case you haven't heard about it yet, its like the island of misfit toys- for song lyrics. We've all done it, we've all misheard a song, then sang it out loudly----- while everyone looks over at you like a doe in the headlights, like whaaaa? What did she just sing? Ummm, thats not right....

If you get a chance check out this sight, its good for a few laughs (and giggles) here are a few of my favorites enjoy...

1.Bon Jovi: Living On A Prayer
The real lyrics were:
It doesn't make a difference if we make it or not.

Misheard as:
It doesn't make a difference if we're naked or not.

2.Pink: Get This Party Started
The real lyrics were:
I'm comin' up
So you better get this party started

Misheard (by a 4 year old as)
I'm throwing up
So you better get the laundry started

3. Foo Fighters: My Hero
The real lyrics were:
There goes my hero, he's ordinary

Misheard as:
There goes my hero, he's old and hairy

4.Starship: We Built This City
The real lyrics were:
We built this city on rock and roll.

Misheard as:
We built this city on the wrong damn road.

For more fun check out:
www.kissthisguy.com

Metal A HeadBangers Journey--

Has anyone seen the new movie called:

METAL - A Headbangers Journey ????

This new independent movie was written by Sam Dunn, a Heavy Metal junkie since his youth and now an adult, who still loves Heavy Metal. All grown up, he's a long haired rocker and anthropologist searching for Heavy Metals roots. This movie takes you on a rollercoaster ride of headbanging metal history. You will learn and see things, you will not believe, interviews and stories with Heavy Metals fathers that have never been given before. Its a twisted ride all the way to the end and if it doesn't leave you shocked, you weren't paying attention.

Best Independent movie I have seen in a long time.
Plus it has a great website- Check out the Trailer!

Is Polka Music Really Bad, or is it just Misunderstood?

Ahhhh......

I try to hide them, but my eastern European roots are always on the surface. While driving in my car recently, I was scanning through radio stations and came upon a radio station, that just played polka music. I have to admit, I stopped and listened for a while. Growing up in a Polish family north of Chicago, weddings (and sometimes even funerals) were surrounded by extended family, lots of SAUSAGE and SAUERKRAUT , kissing Aunties and Polka music. LOTS of Polka Music.

All my extended family members knew who all the famous Polka bands were. Who was in what band, who was better. But mostly, my family could dance. Really, really dance. If you ever have been to, or have ever danced with a good Polka dancer, it's quite unlike anything else. Could there be anything better than flying through the air, really fast, amazingly fast with loud accordian music coming from every speaker... .....you would dance fast, sneak beer, sweat, go outside- then do it all over again.

So where are they now? All those great Polka SuperStars???? Most of them, are sadly long gone, (except Jimmy Sturr of course) but their songs live on.... Here is a quick list of some of my favorites.

1. Beer Barrel Polka
2. Who stole the Keska (Who stole my blood sausage)
3. In Heaven there is No Beer
4. She's too Fat for me
5. Roll out the Barrel
6. Apple Peaches Pumkin Pie
7. Pennsylvania Polka
8. Moja droga jacie kocham (Means that I love you so)
9. Mexican Hat Dance Polka
10. Blue Bell Polka

Oh yea, by the way, rumor has it, like Swing and Salsa, Polka dancing is making a huge comeback. A group called DUPA - Deviant Underground Polka Association- has been setting up gigs to get young people out Polka Dancing- and it seems to be working. So maybe it's so uncool- that yet, its cool again.... funny how that happens...
(By the way DUPA in Polish means Ass) Funny guys!

Name that Tune.....

Does anyone out there remember a gameshow from tv (I remember it from the early 70's) Called name that tune...?

You would say,
" I can name that tune in 4 notes Bob"

The next person would say

"I can name that tune in 3 notes"

"Ok, now name that tune"

In the era of digital music- it needs to make a comeback.

How many of us, run through our digital libraries at super human breakneck speed, thinking:

"no, no, no, no, not That one, no, no, no, no....oh yeaaaaaaa" with just a note or two from the start of each song....

Which Mogger would win?

Who would be the lucky winner of the '1974 Mustang Convertible?

Reptile Palace Orchestra

If your music lists sometimes dip into World Music or if your just looking for something a bit different than the norm, might I suggest a local Madison favorite band called "The Reptile Palace Orchestra" They have been a haunting landmark band here for the last 10 years or so, and I was quite surprised to recently find them on iTunes.

Their musical style is, if you could close your eyes and imagine, a dark basement club in an unmarked building, somewhere in one of the lost countries of the former eastern block, 3:00am, a dank smoke filled room with vodka being pored 'smore from every corner... the place would be rocking, people shakin' people groovin' because their music just makes you want to move. Musically it is slight twist of Balkan traditional and a jazz-rock (due to the electric cello) all melded together in a nice baklava layered treat. Check out their songs "Kochari" or "Godecki Cacak".

For a dervishly good time, if your in the Madison, Wis area they will be playing a couple of upcoming shows at:
Atwood Summerfest on July 29th and Madison Museum of Contemporary Art Rooftop Garden on August 4th, 2006

Need to Know.... Music prices/Milk prices

I really want to know this factoid. Perhaps a fellow Mogger can help me.
I need to know, when I spend my hard earned $1 on a song on iTunes... how much really goes into the artists pocket?? How much money, trickles down the long chain of high powered, boardroom bacon stealers, down to the lowly guy singing to make a living.... half? a quarter? a dime?

Its like the price of milk, if I could just pay a farmer my $3-
I would gladly take a gallon of skim off his hands- and give the money right to him.
"Here Mr. GreenJeans, take my $3"
Wouldn't that be great?? Direct economics.

Music to Junk to....

Music is such an important part of ourselves. How many times do you wake up in the morning- with a song stuck in your head- stuck in the teeniest tiniest fibers of your brain, sometimes only a jolt of pain or happiness makes them disapear. For example, though it is August and nowhere near Chanaukah- Adam Sandler and the Chanaukah song are stuck in my brain fibers. It's been more than a week now and it will just not part my being....

Please Mr. Sandler- get out of my head.
