Grandaddy: Just Like The Fambly Cat

Posted over 5 years ago
This album gets better every time I play it. It came as a recommendation at amazon, who sometimes don't disappoint. The "Customers who bought this item also bought" section listed Tom McRae, Ed Harcourt, Ben Christophers (all of whom I'm already into), and lastly - Grandaddy. It should be noted first that Grandaddy sounds nothing like these artists, though I'm grateful to amazon for their suggestion.Grandaddy cannot be summed up in just one word (or indeed one review). The best way to understand what Grandaddy is, is to experience it firsthand. That said, I'll do my best to give you a vague idea. For me, Just Like The Fambly Cat is an alien space opera set on earth, the band making their own observations of our planet and the way we live (The Animal World contains a prominent loop of an airliner taking off, which repeats throughout the song - only at the end do we hear the undisturbed sound of any aminal). For the most part, Grandaddy deliver feel-good lo-fi psychedelia, though in places we are also made to feel despair (Sangri-La (outro) cries "I'll never return / to shape love" hopelessly to the fade-out).I strongly urge you to give this album a listen - if not for me then for that little warmth in your soul that may need rekindling. Customers who bought this item also bought The Flaming Lips, ELO, and The Coral, which is the best comparison I could make at this point.Feedback always welcome.

  1. levek says Grandaddy is one of my favorite all-time bands. I have all their music, even little known tracks which I regrouped on a CD that I named "Less Famous Grandchildren". It is the only music I never get tired of. I am really sad to see them break up.

  2. misshapenhead says Yeah, the good ones always seem to end before their time. It's a real shame, but we got some great music from them.
