WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

Singing in your accent? Annoying?

Posted over 2 years ago
It seems recently that every new hip artist or band has to sing in their own accent. Although this does work sometimes, is it just me or does is it getting kind of grating? Arctic Monkeys - fine, works for them. Lilly Allen - unsure, kinda works but I'm also wondering if she's going to sing anytime soon. Sometimes I like the sound of her voice, other times I think it's a bit monotonous.Recently there's been a few songs where I've thought, "That's kinda catchy - but the accent could get on your nerves a bit." Examples:Kate Nash - Foundations:"Don't want to look at your face because it's making me sick"The way she sings - or speaks I should say - sick kinda ruins the flow of the song for me. And, of course:"You said I must eat so many lemons, cause I am so bitter. I said I'd rather be with your friends mate, cause they are much FITTAH"I'm still unsure where I stand on the "fittah" line - is it catchy or annoying? Though this song is the least annoying out of all the ones I'm going to mention - I actually bought it...in a shop and everything - but I much prefer her new song Mouthwash, which she sings the whole way through, though you can still hear her accent. The Pigeon Detectives - Take Her Back:Another one which I thought was kinda catchy when I first heard it, but now unlike Foundations, I just think it's blood annoying."'Ees not sure what 'ee should do. She's seventeen 'ees twenty-two"And lastly, Reverend and The Makers - He Said He Loved Me:" He said he laved me." "He didn't lave me" Those lines kinda grate on me.So, like it or hate it? Cool or annoying?

  3. QueenofHell says I think it's the lyrics that irritate me as well, though, with Kate Nash, and her general demeanour. I like hearing accents, on the whole. Especially The Proclaimers. Supporting the Geordie's here, I like to hear the singer of Maximo Park's Geordie accent, too.

  4. Lrodrigo370 says FIRST OFF..i dig Lily Allen. I have no idea what kind of music she is -- but she is catch. As far as the other aritsts' you have posted, i most say that there is worst out there. But I do agree w/ the accent type ordeal. It does kind of ruin the song doesn't it? I admire the observbing though. Good picks! oh yea, and to the comment up there with his youtube(s)....catchy songs, annoying -- but i can dig it....hahaha

  6. Rawkkiddoh says I am a sucker for a cool accent, what bugs me is when the artist has an accent but you cant tell because they are trying to hard to hide it.

  9. indiepixie says I love Kate Nash and I love especially this video. Few videos do I ever commit to memory but this one I did. The director basically recreated my dreamland for me with the vivid colors and childlike familiarity of that house, the little vignettes... I get the accent thing tho. nasal drives me even more nuts. I did the english accent.

  10. Hattie says When I was a kid, I used to wonder why British singers had American accents when they sing, then I joined choir in school and learned that all words had to be pronounced a certain way and that when I did that, I didn't sing with my Texas accent. Now I wonder if some British people are curious as to why Americans sing with British accents. I love accents, so I guess I think it's cool. Peace.
