WHERE THE HOKEY POKEY "IS" WHAT ITS ALL ABOUT

Are you happy? Then take this.

When I was 15, I ran away from home over some argument I have long forgotten now. I went to stay with an older friend I had a crush on... he was cool, let me sleep on his sofa for 3 nights, didn't take advantage of my crush, and talked me into going back home... and bought me the train ticket, since I hadn't even got the money. That was because while he was at work, I checked out his record collection and spent all my cash on two albums he had, which amazingly, I love to this day - about 21 years later. One of the albums was Japan's "Exorcising Ghosts", and here's a wicked live version of the most haunting tune, "Ghosts". And for the true headz: Tricky has some samples from the album on "Maxinquaye" (or so I seem to "hear"), including a clever one from this tune in "Aftermath" - it's cut together with a piece of Marvin Gaye. (Or so I think.)

  1. Hattie says This song and video makes me think of this Eza Pound poem called "In a Station of the Metro." You might notice a vein here, too. "In a Station of the Metro" The apparition of these faces in the crowd; Petals on a wet, black bough.

  4. mktackabery says second what Rawk said micki, cool memory. You were lucky to have that kind of friend then.

  5. mickimicki says @ hattie: I think I can feel what you mean... melancholy, melancholy... but beautiful... @ anakama: You're welcome! I hadn't either, actually, it just hit me from nowhere! @ Rawk & Michelle, thanks... the "story", it was so long ago, I find it hard to believe it was really me... thats growing up I guess... yeah, great friend.... (Now, being a mother, I can imagine what she felt like... and could slap myself for just disappearing, then.. I was one thoughtless brat!!!)

  6. Dale says Fantastic song, from a band that requires further investigation. Exorcising Ghosts, huh? And for your friend, I've found that a true friend helps us do what's right, not what's easy nor what we always want to do. I don't know your current relationship with your family, but I wager they were as grateful for your friend as you were.

  7. mickimicki says .... totally, Dale... (relationship is not perfect, but good enough... and at least I'm out of puberty!!!)

  8. Mike the Knife says I'm pretty fond of Sylvain's post-Japan solo work, as ethereal as this and more so. Nice being able to reconnect with his stuff, micki.

  9. mickimicki says True, Mike. I just listened to sth he did with Ryuichi Sakamoto. Masters of beauty at work, really.

  10. Mike the Knife says And, in a bit of synchronicity, I was listening to Sakamoto and his techno-pop band YMO yesterday. Delectable - and funny, too. (Their version of Archie Bell and the Drells' "Tighten Up" is a panic. Quoted before on MOG, the deathless line, "Sock it to me, Sakamoto!" bears repeating.)

  11. Jonh Ingham says Great video - Mick Karn's bass was always a beautiful sound. A very interesting way to discover a new group. ;-)

  12. mickimicki says @ Mike: Lol... sock it to me Sakamoto... yeah YMO have some treasures... Carl Craig, one of my (if not THE) favourite DJs, plays them a lot in his mixes along with brand new stuff... timeless music (if that may be said after 30 years). @ John: Nothing seems too weird when you're 15... (because you're weirder still...) @ Universalis: Yeah, I know the book, seen the film, and treasure the Soundtrack. I read it (several times) a few years before my own little adventure... in deed, it was the film that put me onto David Bowie. Don't worry too much about the sadness though... I remember this now as a funny story rather than sad, except for my parents' worries... and at the time, for all frustrations and sadness, I was still enormously proud of them. Sometimes I'm not sure how much my "state of mind" influenced my musical preferences then, or if it wasn't the other way around a lot of the time. Joy Division, The Cure, Japan, Sisters Of Mercy etc. - the way sadness was "glorified" in their music, you listen enough and you might end up "creating" some drama in your life just because you think it's "good"....

  14. mickimicki says ....Mmmmh, yummy, Neill. Thanks for the vid. (Re: Beauty: now I know where I've seen Courtney Love's face before....). Post away next week!!! (Japan has been shamefully under-discussed round here.)
