Here's what Caetano Veloso did with ??Come As You Are??. It took me a while to get into it... but now I'm a believer.Just to make this Sunday evening nicer still, I'll add another spoon... here's his version of ??Cucurrucucu Paloma??. You'll sleep tight!

  1. dharmachris says nice... very good for a late night. Here's a little more uptempo Caetano.. I think he was listening to some 80s pop. ?

  2. ivylander says Funny, this is one of the songs on this album that just hasn't clicked for me - I'd estimate that I love about 40 percent of it, find another 40 percent pleasant but inconsequential, and think that about 20 percent of it just doesn't work. This song has fallen into the third category, but listening to it again just now I may have to reopen my ears. By the way, have you ever heard the original upon which Caetano's "Cucurrucucu Paloma" was based? It's by the famously histrionic doyenne of the ranchero. Lola Beltran. It makes Caetano's reinvention of the song even more remarkable, I think. It also demonstrates pretty clearly why Almodovar was drawn to her.....

  3. Augusts1 says Great cover, really beautiful, thanks for sharing it *Micki*! I love the droning strings or guitars at the end. It's always interesting to hear other artists cover Nirvana, especially when they are so diverse as Veloso. I don't think I've heard a Nirvana cover that I haven't enjoyed. Love the ". . .Paloma" song as well, he has such a gorgeous voice. I was only vaguely aware of him(see my comment to Ivy below). Speaking of Almodovar *Ivy*, I think Mr. Veloso was featured singing "Cucurrucucu Paloma" in his film "Talk To Her", I recognize him from his photo above & the song. Love Almodovar's movies, they are so over the top, controversial & yet so human. *dharmachris* love "Odeio" too, it does sound very '80s. Good stuff.

  5. ivylander says You are 100 percent correct, August. This is where I believe Micki's track came from. "Talk To Her" is, to my mind, Almodovar's greatest movie (which is saying quite a lot). It's in my all-time Top Five. And the scene that this song appears in is almost miraculous....

  6. Augusts1 says Thanks Ivy. "Talk To Her" is a great movie(I own it, I love it so much). That scene w/Veloso is a gorgeously photographed & acted scene. Almodovar is such a master at capturing images in such a simple manner that come across so majestically. I'd have to say though that my favorite Almodovar is "Women On The Verge Of A Nervous Breakdown"(which I NEED to own). Such a tragicomic movie, yet so full of compassion for the human condition. There are so many AMAZING & innovative camera shots in it, he was doing stuff that no one even imagined at the time. It's no wonder he has become so famous & often imitated. One of my favorite directors.

  7. ivylander says Ditto on Almodovar's greatness. But while I could never get tired of "Women On The Verge..." I really feel that with "All Around My Mother" and "Talk To Her" he really began creating characters who, though similar to a lot of his earlier characters, are some of the richest, contradictory and humane characters of any filmmaker ever. And he can still be funny as hell when he needs to, and remains a top-notch technician. Haven't seen "Bad Education" yet, but very much want to....

  8. Augusts1 says Yes I would agree w/you, his movie's get richer w/each new film as far as the characters are concerned. "All About My Mother" was the start of his creating even more complex characters emotionally, I agree, although "Live Flesh" he was veering in that direction already. Highly recommend "Bad Education", I saw it in the theater & it's pretty intense & very complex. Gael Garcia Bernal is an incredible actor & does so well in the dual roles he plays in it, he's very convincing(& beautiful as a drag queen). Same with "Volver" & Penelope Cruz is amazing in it. I have a newfound appreciation for her talent, even though I loved her before seeing it. Glad to find out you are an Almodovar fan as well Ivy, there are so few of us around in the US, lol!

  9. poebegone says digging it right away, hesitating at 0:44, oh! picking right back up at 1:50 and 2:00, a believer at 2:30. thanks, micki. (: i must mention i also got more into Caetano Veloso because of Pedro Almodovar. All About My Mother and Talk to Her and Volver are all awesome, and so is Bad Education. i'd said this on mog before - whatever Hollywood has done to Penelope Cruz and Antonio Banderas, they totally rock in their non-American films, such as Volver and Tie Me Up, Tie Me Down, respectively.

  10. mickimicki says @ Chris: Yeah, I think so... it's quite 80's... and I'm so going to bookmark this. The "??I hate you??" lyrics are going to be so good in certain situations ;-) @ Bill: I've heard this version, but what I knew best was a horrible German version, called "Ayayayayay Paloma"... was ubiquitous during my childhood... Thanks for tuning my ears to the original :) I totally understand your doubts about the Nirvana cover, btw... the first time I heard it, I was like "What's that supposed to be about? It's so lame!". Maybe it just works when you're in a certain frame of mind... I'm totally feeling it now, and I realize he's feeling the song... that's one of the mysteries of music, how you suddenly feel something that did nothing for you earlier... Anyway, good morning to you!

  11. Augusts1 says p.s. Btw *Micki*, the American expression is actually 'I'll add another spoon*ful*'. *Poe* cool you're into Almodovar too, welcome to the Almogdovar club, heh!

  12. extraordinarypoems says Love these tunes. Thanks for brightening up my chilly Monday morning.

  13. ivylander says Micki, you're so right about the I-don't-get-it-I-suddenly-get-it syndrome. It happens fairly often with Caetano, I must say. August, I got a CD of music from Almodovar movies about 10 years ago (so it only as far as "Kika"). Some of it is pretty appalling - he actually performed some of the music in "Labyrinth of Passion" himself, and it is truly ghastly. But there are lots of oldies well worth rediscovering from the likes of Lola Beltran, Bola de Nieve, Cheo Feliciano, La Lupe, and a bunch of others. If you ever stumble across it, grab it.

  14. soulrocket says i like the nirvana version, but i would need to give it a 2nd listen to be sure... just as you said. "cucurrucucu paloma" was overplayed on the radio & every village festival when i was a youth... i kind of have mixed feelings for that one, but somehow the caetano version takes all the grit out of the song and i am digging it. almodovar & his pal mcnamara (they were a couple in real life back then) playing it cheap in the early 80s

  15. mickimicki says *Danny*, hermano, give it another try, or give it another try one day when you're in a weird mood... I'd been fast-forwarding this version for years... Hilarious video... Aí caramba! Almodovar is such a star! I like some of his movies better than others, but all of them beat the crap out of 95 % of everything else. *August", thanks for straightening out my English. I'm extremely thankful and in need for every hint from a Native (haha... speaker)... because my business card claims I have "proficiency"... muahahahhahhh... You and *Cody* are right, Nirvana covers are often good (also _their_ covers, just think of _The Man Who Sold The World_). Good coverability must be an indication of great songwriting! And of course, the track is from the Talk To Her soundtrack... I don't even know if it's available on another album? *Poe*, good thing Almodovar got you into Caetano... I don't know what it is about certain Brazilian artists, they seem to have an almost magic touch. And "golden voices". Oh, and I think you're spot on about Banderas and Cruz! (One of those moments to love being from Europe ;-) *extra*, you're welcome! Autumnal beauty is needed :-)

  18. mickimicki says Leftoverking, you haven't heard my karaoke version... so wrong... :P

  19. Augusts1 says *Micki* yvw. I figured you would appreciate knowing that, since you are a translator, that's why I mentioned it. So what did your Mexican friend say the Almodovar song is about? *Ivy* I bet that's some "interesting" music on that Almodovar cd. If that vid/song that Soulrocket posted is any indication of Almodovar's musical "talent" it's probably a good thing he stuck to movies, haha! *Soulrocket* hahaha, that is one wild ass video! Thanks for posting it. Almodovar in a patent leather dress, wow, that is tff for words. And his lover is in quite a get up too, I thought he was a woman at first.

  20. mickimicki says Ehem… well over here it’s late and all the children have gone to bed so I can reveal some quotes from DANNY ’s CONTRIBUTION … He sings stuff like “I fuck you”, “My dick is in the stove” (????)... pretty much what you’d expect and fear when you see his dress and antics :P Yes it’s a really good thing he went into film for good…
    Permalink posted 11/12/2007
  21. Augusts1 says HAHAHAHA! Nasty Pedro, nasty! The "my dick is in the stove"(which would be translated to 'oven' here, although some people say stove) line is basically saying it's HOT wherever he's putting his dick in, lololololol. Dirty, dirty Almodovar, heh! Thanks for the translation, that's tff!

  22. soulrocket says i am playing that tune again and it sounds much better now... its an acquired taste. i think the first time i played it i was expecting the song to explode at some point like on the original, but veloso restrains himself. good one! my favorite almodar films are the first ones, but he does good almost in everything he tries. a very smart fella. its cool you got the lyrics of the song in that clip... they were awfuly great.
