Sodade Cabo-Verdiana

Posted over 2 years ago
??saudadedo ant. soedade, soidade, suidade < Lat. solitate, com influência de saudars. f.,lembrança triste e suave de pessoas ou coisas distantes ou extintas, acompanhada do desejo de as tornar a ver ou a possuir;pesar pela ausência de alguém que nos é querido;nostalgia??*"Sad and delicate memory of distant or vanished persons or things, accompanied by the desire to see or have them again;sadness caused by the absence of somebody who is dear to us;nostalgia"*??Saudade?? is an ubiquitous notion in the Portuguese-speaking world. In Cape Verde, they call it ??Sodade??, and it was an exceptional Cape-Verdian singer who taught the word to the rest of the world. Many of you know this song... I think I posted it before, too, but Cesária Évora's ??Sodade?? bears a lot of repeating.

  1. mickimicki says This is Cesária's version of ??Besame Mucho??. My Spanish is very amateur... but it's seems understandable enough so I'm going to give it a shot. *Kiss me, kiss me a lot As though this night was The last time Kiss me, kiss me a lot For I'm afraid to have you And lose you again I want to feel you very close Look at myself in your eyes See you close to me I think that maybe tomorrow I'll be very far Very far from you*

  2. mickimicki says Finally, I've got another version of ??Sodade??. This take is a collaboration between Portuguese vocalist extraordinaire Dulce Pontes and the Basque accordionist Kepa Junkera. I really like the jazzy piano and accordion... not to mention Dulce Pontes' interpretation... (Another Dulce Pontes post from yesterday)

  4. soulrocket says love both versions of "sodade" and my fave is the 2nd one. i need to record dulce’s music for my mom, the translation weas perfect, considering she sings with a portuguese accent that makes it even more encommiable. tastey as bacalhau com arroz post.

  5. mickimicki says Oh my god, I'm constantly living with severe bacalhau withdrawal ever since I've returned from the Iberian peninsula... (mouth watering).. it's probably the second most Portuguese thing next to saudades... ...I guess I proved (and you uncovered) a well-kept translator's secret... you don't have to actually _speak_ the language you're translating from... I thought she must have an accent... my Spanish probably sounds a bit like that, too...
