WHERE THE HOKEY POKEY "IS" WHAT IT'S ALL ABOUT

Letting Go

Minnie Riperton... another creature of beauty who did not live to an old age... I've been feeling this song since I met you... hurt me to think she'd not made it to be happily old on someone's side... ... I'm stirring in the mud... the mud needs to be stirred...

  2. Mike the Knife says Purty all around. It's bittersweet whenever I hear Minnie's soaring, swooping voice. Needless to say, I feel especially happy whenever her daughter Maya Rudolph - one of the cast members on "Saturday Night Live," makes me laugh in a sketch or busts into a song parody. Powerful pipes there - truly, her mother's daughter - and a gift for comedy, too.

  3. mickimicki says Thanks for the explanation, Mike. I'd read that people seem to refer to Minnie as "Maya Rudolph's mother" a lot, and I'd been wondering what Maya might be famous for. Good to hear it's comedy... musical comedy even... I have a thing for funny people. I think they're really my heroes :)

  4. Mike the Knife says And, FYI, Minnie's widower and Maya's father is songwriter and record producer Richard Rudolph who, of course, worked with Minnie, but also with Manhattan Transfer, New Edition, Teena Marie, Timothy Schmidt of The Eagles, Jermaine Jackson, Michael McDonald, James Ingram and The Temptations. He also supervises music for feature films and TV shows, including the movies "Black Rain," "Flatliners," "Running Scared," "Weekend at Bernie's," "Cocoon," "Made in America" and "No Mercy."

  6. Mike the Knife says In case you're curious, here's a photo (pre-motherhood, and pre-short, straight hairstyle) of Ms. Rudolph: And here she is, in character, as Donatella Versace (one of her SNL impersonations) - with the real Donatella on the left: Sidebar: She's coupled with filmmaker Paul Thomas Anderson, who is also the father of her daughter Pearl.

  8. 2Serenity says I love Maya Rudolph. I tried to see a live taping of the show but no more seats were available. I was going to hang around the studio to meet her but I was too tired. She is hilarious.
