Vacation

If you can at all stand to listen to their albums, My Morning Jacket is one of those bands that you really should make an effort to see live. This song particularly brings out their intense stage presence and overwhelming musical sense of ambiance.

It Still Moves is certianly one of those albums with a consistent vision, that very naturally plays like an album, from beginning to end. No need to skip to the good stuff or over a weak track. It all bleeds together and disassociates you from tangible things, or at least idealizes them and reframes them like quiet lonely art. Music fans probably all have albums that make them feel this way. I have always compared this phenomenon to Tom Petty's Wildflowers.

And that standard of mood altering escapism is what you can expect at a show. I currently have Netflixed their Live DVD, Okonokos. It is really pretty outstanding, and a great example of what you can expect from their live shows. I caught them at Bonnaroo this year, and my lofty expectations were even surpassed.

My Morning Jacket is one of those bands whose sound has a mental association to me. Other bands or songs conjure times in college, or living in London, or generally a girl I was into at the time or whatever. But MMJ reminds me in particular of perennial vacations in Colorado. In fact, I have been going there with my family for years, and only in 2003 upon discovery of this album did they get a soundtrack, one that now stretches back years earlier. The sometimes lazy, sometimes passionate ramblings are a perfect compliment for the windy mountain roads of Snowmass and the scenic cliffs of Glenwood Canyon, and I cant help but go on vacation when I hear these songs. I am headed back to to Snowmass in under a month, and you can bet what I will be listening to.
