Doomsdayer's Commercial from The Fact Facer on Vimeo.
Been slacking my mog account for some time I know, in the meantime my main blog undomondo has gotten on the MMN thanks to an invite by the MOG team. Here's a new release from Portland's Grails.
Grails' new one Doomsdayer’s Holiday has an all-out sinister aura, which sounds as if its coming off some medieval alchemy den in the Arabian Peninsula. Although there are mellow and atmospheric pieces like the "The Natural Man" or "Acid Rain" some pieces like the title track or "Predestination Blues" where Sun City Girls‘ Alan Bishop shows up for the vocals, sound like the aural accompaniment to Rabelais’ Gargantua.
The 4 piece mix drony & post-rocky elements with sludgy riffs creating atmospheric conditions that might turn the lead in your house into gold or summon a beast from the netherworld if played at the right volume and for the right duration. Out on Temporary Residence, and thanks to 5 Roses Press for the European version. Check out my tumblr for more Grails videos.

We’re huge fans of Ghost Box and the nostalgic aesthetic of their output which brings libraries, victorian buildings, steampunk and old hauntologic memories to mind. I’ve been a few months late in figuring out that The Advisory Circle aka Jon Brooks aka King of Woolworths has a new one called Other Channels out. I should have subscribed to their newsletter earlier!
The Advisory Circle has a similar aesthetic as Belbury Poly and The Focus Group, short sketches of nostalgia, old time radio, public information films, surrealist English banter, analogue synth soundscapes and library music, so if you’re a casual radio-friendly song listener you might go WTF? But if you’re fascinated with old found photos, scans of early 50’s periodicals, public information films or retrofuturism, prepare to be amazed because The Advisory Circle makes the music you’ve always wanted to listen to.

Any of you remember Doctor Mabuse? The notorious criminal made famous by Fritz Lang is the inspiration of the band’s name. Similar to its elusive namesake, The Mabuses has been an overlooked gem and never made big. While Kim Fahy and Co’s career spans almost two decades with various projects, they’ve been very selective and released only two albums, both critically acclaimed.
Now, I don't know where I've been the past few months but I've only recently got their third "Mabused" and I'm impressed with what I hear. With their third album, the Londoners are back to form with their versatile psychedelic pop, and surreal British humour, which we like very much both in cinema and music. Reminds me of Madness with less ska influence among other Britpop sensations like XTC and The Beatles. Extensively refined pop music with the added bonus of a chamber orchestra churning endless musical references and influences at a time on every song, the culmination of 20 years of experience.
