PerniceMania

Let's get this out of the way: I am a Joe Pernice fanatic. I believe any song his velvety vocals touches turns to gold. He is the closest thing to a musical deity in my aural universe. So, I feed my soul a steady diet of everything Pernice, from his early alt-country outfit, Scud Mountain Boys, to the current amalgamation that is the Pernice Brothers. This includes an album by Chappaquiddick Skyline, which is an alias he used to release an album he felt was not worthy of the Pernice Brothers stamp. (It is.) The guy has even released a book of poetry, and recently inked a deal for a full-fledged novel. I think the best musicians are bards, so this may explain my near-infatuation with JP. What it boils down to for me is that he makes sad songs sound so darn beautiful, what with the aforementioned smoothness of his pipes, and layered orchestration. I catch myself sunnily humming along to the melody, yet when the lyrical part of my brain processes what is being said, I realize someone in the song is bursting with misery/misfortune. Genius, I tell ya. Here's one just aching with lost love, coupled with the pain of seeing someone you love with another lover, contrasted with a sunny veneer. Enjoy!

  3. mellowman says Of course I'm biased, but the whole album is great. Also, make sure to check out anything by the Pernice Brothers and Scud Mtn. Boys if alt-country trips your trigger. As far as Chappaquiddick Skyline, I would recommend "Hundred Dollar Pocket" which is perhaps the only song ever inspired by Bob Barker's shtick of getting a hundred bucks on The Price is Right if you bid exactly right. My favorite Pernice Brothers album is "Yours, Mine, and Ours", and is solid throughout, but I especially love the tracks "Blinded By the Stars" and "Cut The Baby in Two" which is the best pop song ever about the Biblical story of King Solomon! As you can see, I could go on and on...Thanks for listening!
