New Decemberists Single over at Pitchfork

Posted over 5 years ago
Download it (legally) while you can.Their new album, The Crane Wife, doesn't release until October 3. After an initial listen to this single, I can say that Colin and crew don't disappoint. While the track sounds like a prototypical Decemberists song, it is a little cleaner and "better" produced (i hate that phrase) than their past efforts.Max put together a track by track review of the album here.good stuff. If you haven't heard of these guys before, you should give them a listen. If you enjoy tales about pirates, chimney sweeps, and other 18th century subjects laid over some solid "folk prog" (whatever the fuck that means - thanks pitchfork), you will enjoy them...

  1. Spencer Owen says "solid “folk prog” (whatever the fuck that means – thanks pitchfork)" I'm not a fan of the Decemberists, but you're getting a "like it" just for that. Made me laugh. Also, I like how downloading something from Pitchfork is legal, but downloading it from some blog with 5% of the readership is not. (Not taking qualms with your language; that's how I would have put it, too, before I thought about it.)

  2. CBSchick says I was literally going to make the exact same post. I can't wait for this album! I'm completely sold on any music with an accordian. Plus, they're just amazing. October 3rd? That's a long time to make me suffer.

  3. mcdermott says SOMA - this download is legal because Capital records handed it over to Pitchfork.....of course, they only gave it to them because of the readership numbers, but that's a different story...

  5. fairportfan says Neet. Hadn't heard them before, but i can tell it's time to go looking. Geeze. If i wasn't sure Ray Davies was alive, i'd be wondering about channeling, based on the first fifteen seconds of that track... (And that's one of the higher compliments i can pay, for those who might wonder...)

  6. Dave says It's a great album, even won over my wife (who didn't care for "Picaresque"). The prog elements really come forward on "The Island/Come and See/etc." and "The Crane Wife 1 & 2". I love it, it's in heavy rotation with the new Dylan.

  7. that1guy says I've had the album for about two weeks now, was going to do a podcast on it, but then it dawned on me how under-whelming it was.

  8. Rinserepeat says Psych folk, trance folk, and now folk prog...whatever happened to "just plain folk"?! Pitchfork can go folk themselves... P.S. I give a hearty thumbs-up for the tracks Dave mentioned in his comment above...

  9. CBSchick says Fav Decemberists Song - The Mariner's Revenge Song - who doesn't love a 9-minute song about two guys meeting in the belly of a whale whilst one tells his the story about how he's dedicated his life to finding the guy who drove his mother to dying and getting his revenge. It reminds me of my own life. How bout yours?
