The Mae Shi

Posted about 5 years ago

This is criminal. There's not even one post on MOG about LA's (and my) favorite art/noise-rock heroes!? Well I can certainly rectify this unfortunate predicament.
To be fair, times were not been quiet so well for The Mae Shi in the year of 2006. They had not only hundreds of copies of their album ("Heartbeeps", in all it's 16 minute glory) stolen from their tour van, but hundreds of their hard earned merch dollars. To boot they lost their lead singer. Not such a fantastic year, but The Mae Shi won't let a few setbacks stop them, hell no, they got themselves a new lead singer, a bunch of new toys, and found a new and amazing pop sensibility!
"Heartbeeps" and all the preceeding works sounded like crazy spazzed out electric fucking mayhem. I need to break loose sometimes, and this was a time before Hyphy, so where was a young boy to look for some fun than in the throaty yelps and screams, crazzy-ass guiatrs and all around chaoss of The Mae Shi? Nowhere else, really, I don't do heavy metal.
Times are changing now for the boys, with the leaving of Slim Moon at Kill Rock Stars and the closing of 5RC, KRS's subset label, they're without a home for their music. Actually in all reality they're not a liberty to say who the lucky label is just yet. However what is clear is that The Mae Shi have found a new love of pop music, not only in it's length (longer than the normal 1-2 minute Mae Shi track), but also in it's fun, it's hooks, and it's feel. The new Mae Shi tracks don't sound like the class president's rebellious, pimply, and fat, younger sister. No they sound more like, well, the class president. They're fun, but they still have the fuzz and sincerity of the crazziness that is The Mae Shi...really all they've done is tuned that down a bit, and made themselves a hell of lot easier for everyone who may not be so Hyphy/Noise oriented to listen to. The shit is fun, and it's damn good; whatever the new album's going to be called (7XX7, HLLYH, PWND have all been titles floating around), I know it's gonna be damn good!
Here's a hot track from whatever the new album will be called, the track's called "Run To Your Grave", and it's bound to get stuck in your head for a day or two or three. Don't say I didn't warn you!
p.s. you really should hit up their "band page":http://www.myspace.com/themaeshi and listen to each song over there, they're four of my five favorite tracks!

  2. samuraijohnny says Interesting . . . does this band accurately represent the genre you called art/noise-rock? This song you posted sounds like it could be from the 80's. I also listened to the songs on their myspace page and their sound seems very eclectic . . . I hear sounds from the 60's and 70's mixed in too, which makes sense after reading their influences.

  3. max says well, to be honest i don't know if i'd really label them that anymore considering the new songs (two of which make up the four on that page), which are really more pop songs than anything either noise, art, or rock. However a good deal of their previous works, especially my favorite little Heartbeeps album, was essentially 1 minute track after tracks of loud, stomping, screaming bliss (like Born For A Short Time). There are exceptions, but i think it's pretty accurate to call most of their work thus far somewhere between noise and art-rock.

  6. annnna says I'm not so sure about the noise (heavy metal is not my favorite either) but their new songs seem like they have the quirky pop sound I love so much.
