New Modest Mouse Single

Posted about 5 years ago
uhhh, this is the new Modest Mouse single? Even with the crappy radio-rip quality, it's pretty easy to tell that this song really sucks ass. Label me completely unimpressed. To quote someone from I Guess I'm Floating: "why don't they just call the album "Sam's Town"...wow, just really, really disappointed, I wen't back to listen again, it's even worse the second time around, man, way to ruin my pleasant Wednesday!

  1. that1guy says hey Max, how goes? Understand that we will NEVER hear another Modest Mouse album with the same quality as Long Drive, Building Nothing, Lonesome Crowded, etc... it just won't happen anymore. I build my hopes up for something amazing because they are one of my favorite bands, but that's pre Good News. It's horrible to see Issac Brock all fat and uncreative, appealing to the masses instead of what they use to do. It happened to the Decemberists too and will continue to happen with bands we really enjoy. I feel your pain and am saddened by this new dreck called MM.

  2. max says ah, I guess so, it's all just so disappointing, but hey, there's never a shortage of good new bands, I guess I'll just have to start filling the void. And you know what, I'll always have Interstate 8, Long Drive..., and Lonesone Crowded west, won't I? I can sit back and enjoy the good ol' days.

  3. River Lethe says Haven't heard the single yet, but Modest Mouse, Decemberists, Trail of Dead and lots more are still GREAT bands. Who cares if a larger number of idiots enjoys them with you now? Plus, the production on their newer albums is better as well.

  5. max says i both agree and disagree...first of all i think the only good trail of dead album has been Source Codes... (and no that's not just the p-fork review talking)...as for the decemberists I'll always loved them, but i can definetely see where that1guy is comming from on the new album, even me, the little decemberist purist have my reservations about it. As for Modest Mouse, I think almost anyone can agree that Modest Mouse have gone downhill since Good News... In regards to everyone liking the bands now, that was never mentioned, it really doesn't bother me much naymore if many people know the bands I love. I used to have a problem with it, but I decided that was really immature and downright stupid. Good music should be shared, and the artists I love should be able to sell and make some money. As for production value, let's be honest, sometimes cheaper is better, in fact many times it is. Since we were talking about them, The Decemberists "Castways and Cutouts", far and away my favorite, and most poorely produced due to little money.

  9. River Lethe says Yes, Castaways is my favorite as well. Sorry, I just heard this a lot when I ran a record store. So many people that were into bands like Trail of Dead, Modest Mouse, At the Drive-In, etc. bailed as soon they got media/radio/critical attention. Either that, or they seemed to want the same album over and over again, which ironically, is what most pop music does. I just have to jump in and play devil's advocate on those particular bands because I happen to love the newer albums as well. And I will dissent on the Good News. I think it's the best one, and I know I'm in the minority and it destroys my "indie cred", whatever that is. I'm not gonna listen to the Modest Mouse single yet. I still hold hope that Mr. Marr will be a good addition to their lineup.

  10. max says yeah, i heard a lot of the same working in a record store as well....though i will say I still think adding Marr was a good decision, i'm looking foward to their next tour. Haha, yes, say goodbye to your indie cred :) Meh, Good News isn't as bad as I or anyone else makes it out to be, but still not my favorite. I'd say wait, hear the songs when the album comes out, or at least a better version of the single. Pass judgement then. I'll be waiting :)

  11. River Lethe says Yeah, I usually don't like the singles, so I like to wait to hear it within the context of an album. Sometimes they work better that way. Goodbye indie cred, I hardly knew ye.

  13. Lyla says i have to say, i think the decemberists have been getting a lot of undeserved crap from fans lately - and i'm usually one of the first to jump on the "they sold out" bandwagon, which is one of my major faults. i honestly think that _the crane wife_ was phenomenal, and possibly their best work yet - not my FAVORITE, but as far as actual production, etc. goes, i have to say - they didn't get anymore mainstream (i've still yet to ever hear a decemberists song on anything other than college radio), and yeah, it's more heavily produced, etc., but i think it's a GOOD thing; they've always gone for that bigger sound, and now they can achieve it. other bands, yeah, they sign to major labels and immediately start the suckage (even my favorite band, death cab, is guilty of this), but the decemberists aren't one of them. that said, i'm not sure what to make of this new modest mouse. i'm trying to hold out hope for the album - usually there's one track or so on a cd that's a throwaway, and ...maybe this is it? yeah, probably not. i'm working on being optimistic this year, though.

  14. JiXXerJeFF says For some reason I can't listen to the MM single (which I have been impatiently waiting for- I was actually listening to all MM today @work thinking about the new album...) but I am uneasy about all of this down-talk about it. I was so excited to hear about Marr joining MM in the review in Rolling Stone about their few shows they did... I'm scared...

  15. max says @ Lyla...well to be honest, I don't really think there's been a lot of shit talking about the Decemberist's Crane Wife, however i will admit to there being many people who now suddenly seem to just be dissing on the D's because everyone else seems to mentioning how they like them, or maybe people just feel now is the apt time to get everyone's attention about their hatred. There's also been quite a lot of dissage on Colin lately too (arrogance nonsense, that i don't really believe having met the man breifly), however I think the reaction to the Crane Wife has been nothing but good. I do't believe in the whol selling out idea, nor do I really care (nor do i think it in any way affected their new music)...My only real point is that I'm a very hardcore Decemberist fan (I've seen them a million times, and I think any of the MOG folk, especilly david, who always hated on my D's loyalty, can tell you how much i truely love their music and way of telling stories), Im just not very hapy with the new album, ot really a direction I articularly like, not to say it's even my least favorite album (which Her Majesty currently holds the place of, but even that is better than so many other things)....but enough ranting, i love, and always will love the Decemberists! As for MM, yeah, we'll have to wait for the actual album to pass judgment, but I just really hope it's not all sounding like this, espeially with Marr! @Jixx ....to be honest, I've seen them bout 5 times, i'm always unimpressed with their live show , Brock just doesn't seem to care, but then that is his demeanor...that said, I will always see them if I can, just love MM too much!

  16. supertopsecret says Max, this is horrible! When it first came on I thought it was Franz Ferdicrap. Make me want to cry. If MM did this for the money, it truly is the root of all evil. Destroying music, what a horrible thing. Keep rocking the melodica. If you come on Friday you should bring it by, we can totally have a blow-off!

  17. max says haha, i may have to! That's my baby, I love the melodica (i'm actually thinking i may drop by tomorrow instead)....anyway the MM is pretty damn bad man, it's just really disappointing, those cheezy syth sounding strings are what just kills it for me, ha

  18. Spencer Owen says Max, you're coming by this week? Do it. And yeah, thanks for posting this instead of me. Stupid, stupid, stupid. I should've known better than to be excited. I'll still listen to the new album, but ... jesus. I'm not surprised, ultimately. You can really hear Marr in it; it's just that he's sort of been boring for many years now. Whoops.

  19. max says Yeah, thursday (tomorrow) for sure I's there, probably from around lunch time till 4, should be good times. yeah, I kind of did forget to mentio that fact that you can still tell this is Marr, but, well, it's all been said by now...see you tomorro, i'll make sure I come before so we can ride in the scrapper with KML blazin' like the old days

  29. tildesk says i have to agree with "max". this album is sadly disappointing. I started to listen to MM a few years ago when my older sister Pru told me to listen to them, and god was i glad. Unfortunately didnt get to go see MM until last year when the last album came out and there were all these f'ing hipsters, sorostitutes and frat boys there. ick.AND f;ing Brock was OVER AN HOUR late b/c he just HAD to fly in separately. Man was his band pissed.

  30. IZIZOZ says Well...I have to say that I am really digging the new album. The first time I listened to it, I hated it. But I kept going back and listening to it again. Finally, around the 7th time I played it, the songs began to stick, and now I cannot stop listening to it. I say give it another chance or 7. Might turn out to be a pretty remarkable album after all.

  33. max says i'm really starting to feel bad about this being the first thing you see when you get to the Modest Mouse page, since it's the most discussed, because I really love Modest Mouse. Though I haven't really been called out on it, I would for the record just like to put out that Modest Mouse is one of my all time favorite bands. In fact I own more of their cd's than any other artist, and it looks like I have just over 150 tracks of theirs. While I still can't get behind the new album in any way I'll always have the older material of solid gold to keep me going. Everything from Interstate 8 (Edit The Sad Parts is just so boss!), to Building Nothing Out Something, The Fruit That Ate Itself, of course The Lonesome Crowded West (my favorite)...I actually could name every album before this one as one of my all-time favorite albums, even the second half of Good News(...) I just thought I had to put that out there. I think I'll go listen to Trailer Trash...

  34. donomite says I gotta say i'm getting sick of some of these Modest Mouse "fans" saying Modest Mouse has gone downhill ever since "Good News". I know I'm not the only one who thinks that "Good News for People Who Love Bad News" is one of the band's best albums. Hell, most professional critics would agree with that statement, not that those guys really matter. However, I firmly believe that the Modest Mouse on the last two albums is the same Modest Mouse on "The Lonesome Crowded West". In all fairness, I also must point out the fact that the version of "Good News" that I own is different than the version most people own. I got the cd from my brother for my birthday, however he gave me a bootleg version cause he is a cheapo. The bootleg version actually turned out to have a much higher level of fidelity than the version in stores, it was leaked into the internet before the studio messed with it. When I heard the actual version after listening to the one I got, I have to say the studio messed up the album a little bit. So the real version of "Good News" may not be so great, but I still think it was the best album of 2004.

  35. max says look, this is a never ending road we're going down that neither of us will probably concede to...I'll admit I'm not particularly fond of everyone finding out about "my little band" or whatever, but I honestly believe that especially this new album and a decent chunk of the last one just aren't as good as any of the preceding albums. And the same way you used it, I know I'm not the only one who thinks the same way as well. I just can't agree with your statement of MM sounding the same on Lonesome as they do now, I find that album to be so much more innovative and unique, but most importantly much more emotional. It was a different time when they were making that album, I believe they had different asperations at the time, different "musical role-models". There's a very interesting video somewhere around the web that's actually from right around the time they were recording Lonesome with people like Calvin Johnson, Elliott Smith, and a bunch of others shedding light on the band; it's a good portrail of the time and the feeling of that album. Frankly as tired as you may be of hearing Modest Mouse "fans" like me complain about the new material, I'm just as tired of having to prove my idea of the greater worth of the older material to contradict. Neither of us is "right", it's just a difference of opinions. I really only put that last comment there because I felt I was slighting MM by having this be the first post you see when you enter their name here on MOG because in all honesty they're one of my all-time favorites. I still stand beind the original post, I just wanted to put my feeling about the rest of the bands work out there. Anyway, I'd love to hear the alternate recording you have of the album, sounds interesting. I deffinetely know that bootlegs can sound awesome. I was in New York and found posibly my favorite Elliott Smith record which is a collection of B-Sides, Bootlegs, and Rarities. That stuff is the shit!

  36. max says well, this is from a very long time ago so it may not be the one on the actual album, perhaps just a demo. Anyway I really have no desire to go listen to the new again to compare as I'm still haunted by the new album after the first two listens... it was enough.
