To readjust you’ve got to trust, that all the fuss is just a minor thing, and I’m a minor king

Transport, motorways and tramlines, starting and then stopping, taking off and landing, the emptiest of feelings, disappointed people, clinging on to bottles, and when it comes it's so, so, disappointing. Let down and hanging around.

Today for the first time in a while I finally sat down and listened to a cd of Chopin pieces performed on the piano by the late Shura Cherkassky I had been meaning to get to for a while now. I have always loved classical, especially performed on the piano, but always seem to get distracted from it in time, turning to something more accessable or simply easier to listen to. apart from my plan this winter break to sit down and work out some Beethoven on the keys think i'll commit myself to delving into the genre a little more and get some backgroud knowledge. something that has always struck me about classical is the movement of the pieces as it seems the progressions are everchanging, something i don't hear to much of in music's more contemporary forms. i'd like to hear some ideas of where people believe classical stands in comparison to modern music, particularily in the vast amount of indie stuff out there. do you hear strong correlations between the two? comeon moggers, always say you like variety, show it to me!

I think the only thing that really compares to classical music now days would be jazz or some types of metal/rock. I can not think of one indie band that fills the gap between todays styles and baroque. Except Queen of course, they were wonderful. haha. I believe certain forms of jazz are todays version of classical, like John Coltrane. You should also look at the works of Chick Corea. There are some pretty amazing metal bands as well, although I don't really favor that style, at all, the guitar work and odd timing is increadible. Dimmu Borgir is a pretty good example of this. Although odd the album 'Mahavishnu Orchestra - Birds of Fire' is a pretty interesting as well. Oh, Jaga Jazzist is an indie band that is pretty complex. I don't know if we will ever have talent like Liszt or Chopin again though. The music of the future however has endless possibilities so i guess you never know.
As far as Chopin goes, I highly recommend Murray Perahia's playing. I have an album of his (Chopin: Études, Opp. 10 & 25) that is just fascinatingly beautiful.
There's some of evidence of classic disciplines in modern indie music, but it seems to be to mostly in the progressive areas, with bands like the Mars Volta and Coheed & Cambria. Even My Chemical Romance's latest album throws Queen-like operatics into the mix.

This guy is definitely pretty artful outside of the RHCP... someday I'll really sit with his work.

I have Sony MDR-EX51's; they are quite acceptable and block out lots of background noise.
