It's a big deal when Black Flag comes to town.
Especially when that town is Cedar Falls, IA.
Greg Ginn and Gone did an in-store at OMNI records on The Hill (near the University of Northern Iowa).
The "Beach House" [a.k.a. Boathouse) is located on the Cedar River - near downtown Cedar Falls. We were there all day. For soundcheck, the show and everything else. The venue was not a big place, so the wall of sound (that could have served for a small stadium show) could be felt in every joint and bone and muscle. The bass setting the rhythm of your heart beat. Before the show Henry sat out front reading Rolling Stone hunched up against a wall. Not the muscle clad man he is today. I walked up to talk to him. Said something stupid about subliminal messages in the ice cubes in the vodka ad. Got a grunt in return. The show was loud - but great. The SST guys were all fantastic musicians. I danced through all three sets. Sweating and removing clothes. Doing my best to emulate Henry - shirtless and in my black running shorts. Not a good armor when you've got leather clad, metal studded, mohawked, fat men in the crowd. Earned my share of battle scars including a spike in the lip (nice). Amazing day in the history of the C.F. punk scene. Setting the stage for places like the REVERB and FSU House which would come later in the path of history.
