An Interesting Question Posed About Bright Eyes' Cassadaga...

Posted almost 5 years ago

Jameson poses an interesting question about an image Conor Oberst uses on his latest Bright Eyes album, Cassadaga. In the song "If the Brakeman Turns My Way" Conor assumes that we all know who "the Brakeman" is. But I find myself, like Jameson found himself, wondering, "Who is this Brakeman, and why is he turning my way?"
I myself like to think of the Brakeman like a dirty old bum. He’s comin’ up to me, and I’m ‘bout to sock him, cause, you know, he’s a dirty old bum, but then I say, “Wait a minute, there’s something… I don’t know, special about this guy.”
Or sometimes I like to think of the Brakeman with like giant eagles wings and singin’ lead vocals for Lynyrd Skynyrd with like an Angel Band, and I’m in the front row, and I’m hammered drunk…
Or maybe sometimes, I like to think of the Brakeman as wearin’ a Tuxedo T-shirt, ‘cause it says, like, “I want to be formal, but I’m here to party too.” I like to party, so I like my Jesus to party.
Or maybe he looks like this:

All I know is that if, and when, he turns my way, I would like to know who I'm looking for.
How do you like to picture The Brakeman?

  1. Liopleurodon says I think Conor's brakeman is refering to a brakeman on a train, who works the brakes and all that... so if he turns his way, the train can take him to a place to level out! ha :o)

  2. matt cleveland says I guess that's what Conor was going for. The photo above is actually a painting of the railroad style brakeman, but I kindof like eagle winged version wearing a tux t-shirt spouting Skynard tunes.

  4. tairyn123 says i believe it was an itunes podcast conor did when the cd was released he explained that this song has to do with hobos jumping trains and the brakeman has to do with the conductor or the person who steers the train or whatever. you can access on bright eyes' website or itunes

  5. matt cleveland says Thanks for all the responses, and sorry to confuse so many folks with this. I kind of meant it as a joke. Sort of, what do you imagine The Brakeman to look like??? He could be anybody really... He doesn't have to be a train conductor does he...
