Trent Reznor to China: download our music, don't buy it from pirates

Posted over 4 years ago
I had a chat with Trent Reznor last week and he gave quite an incredible viewpoint of how he feels about downloading, music labels and the digital model. Full article is at http://www.music2dot0.com/archives/36Below is a summary by Cory Doctorow of Boing Boing based on my original article:Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails was in Beijing last week for a rock festival. In a great, inflammatory interview with Music2dot0, Reznor excoriates the labels, promises to go independent and sell through his website -- and he exhorts Chinese fans to download his music for free rather than buying it from pirate CD sellers. "As for the special situation in China, it does not seem to be easy to obtain Western music via legal channels, so I have the following suggestion for our fans: If you can find and buy our legal CDs, I express my thanks for your support. If you cannot find it, I think that downloading from the Internet is a more acceptable option than buying pirated CDs. Our music is easy to find on the Internet, and you might not need to spend much effort to find most of our songs. If you like our songs after you've heard them, please feel free to share it with your friends. As I have put all my effort and heart into my music, I sincerely hope that more and more people can share the enjoyment with us." Read more at http://www.music2dot0.com/archives/36

  1. Kate says That was your interview? It made my day when I read it last week. On one side, you have Prince, who is going out of his way to alienate his fans and sic the WebSheriff on people, and on the other, you have Trent Reznor, who is fully aware that the music industry is an ailing dinosaur and is doing his part to make sure his music gets to fans around the world. He has the right idea.

  2. maths says Yup, that was done by me. Trent Reznor is trying to get a balanced view of how things should be. Recently it's all become a bit like Prince vs Trent Reznor for the title of People's Artist, but if one is objective enough, Prince did get it right on some counts - YouTube is able to filter out stuff they want to and yet on others they don't bother. And YouTube is profiting from others' content so they're no angels either. It is all starting to resemble a Wild West land grab so there is something perversely poetic about a Web Sheriff coming onto the scene. But the hero of the hour seems to be Trent Reznor as he gets it.
