WHERE THE HOKEY POKEY "IS" WHAT IT'S ALL ABOUT

The Beatles Rarity Of The Week (Spot the Oddity, Pt. 5)

Posted about 1 year ago
This will be the last week of the Spot the Oddity series, however the normal BROW will be back in February. The idea is to figure out what is different about this version of Penny Lane vs. the one you normally hear on the radio these days (i.e. the version on the Magical Mystery Tour album). The version presented here was also out officially at one time or another. As a bonus see if you can determine where (i.e. on what release) this version first surfaced. Put your answer in a comment here. Of course, if your going to try this don't read the comments until you do (that is, if there is any, this time). Good luck to all.Want to make a suggestion for a future Beatles Rarity of the Week? Then let me hear from you. To help you decide you could visit my Beatles collection web site (www.MyBeatlesCollection.com) and hit the “Tracks” button and search my collection, then Mogmail me with what you’d like me to feature. The site has been updated recently and should be much easier to navigate. All the best...

  1. steve simon says shit, i figured it would be clear as i have heard this song hundreds of times( though i did not go back to hear orginal, figured that would be cheating), but i can't tell. something with the ending? do tell

  2. jerste says Seems to me that the last 15 seconds or so are different. This one sounds more like a single (there was one anyway) but I dont want to look smart - which i'm not. The lyrics are the same. I win nothing, right?

  3. marknavl says First off, it's not cheating to listen to the original. The fun of it is trying to get it without having to do that but it's still not cheating. You are both on the right track...hint: play close attention to the ending as you both suggested already.

  4. AA Coppertop says I'm not looking at any of the other comments until I hit Publish... Quite enjoyed heaing the song just now, by the way. I think that band's going places... ...My Guess: That little piccolo trumpet doodad in the last ten seconds is unfamiliar to me.

  5. dermahrk says I think the single version ended with that trumpet flourish at the end - no cymbals. There seems to be some distortion in the last verse, but I assume that's a player problem. Don't I remember an alternate version of "Penny Lane" on the Capital ??Rarities?? album, long out-of-print?

  7. marknavl says Dermahrk, Coppertop: Yes this version was on the Rarities album. The early U.S. and Canadian pressings of the Penny Lane 45 contained the extra horn riff and it was in mono (as all the singles were at that time). The Rarities album brought it back but created a stereo version simply by tagging the horn riff on at the end of the album version of the song. The picture I included of the 45 picture sleeve here was a clue. I guess that wraps up the Spot the Oddity segment early. Thanks for listening folks.
