The Beatles Rarity Of The Week (Spot the Oddity, Pt. 1)

Posted about 1 year ago
Happy New Year! I decided to try something different this month for the BROW. Usually for the rarity I will feature something that has never been officially released. However for the next 4 weeks I am only going to post songs that were officially released. Now they won't be the versions that you typically hear on the radio now or pick up at your favorite CD shop but they will be close. Yet something is going to be at least slightly different about them. Here is your chance to test your familiarity with some of these Beatles songs that most of you have heard hundreds of times or so. So it's a game of "spot the oddity".
For example I have posted I Am The Walrus this week but there is something that is odd about it that differs from the one you normally hear on the radio (yet it has been officially released this way before). See if you can spot what's different and if you feel like venturing a guess you can post it in comments below. Of course, if you want to give this a try and there are already comments below, make sure you listen to the track and figure it out before reading them. For a bonus, if you know anything about the source of this alternate version, tell us about that in your comments too. I will post the answer in the BROW next week or just acknowledge the correct comments if they are there. We'll just see how this goes....Good luck!Want to make a suggestion for a future Beatles Rarity of the Week? Then let me hear from you. Visit my Beatles collection web site (www.MyBeatlesCollection.com) and hit the “Tracks” button and search my collection, then Mogmail me with what you’d like me to feature.

  4. crowleyal says This version appeared on the U.S. version of the Rarities album (which, to my knowledge, never appeared as a CD yet is far more interesting than the Parlophone version of Rarities). I didn't know that it was a released verison, tho--where/when was it released? The difference from the track that usually gets played is that there's an extra 8 right before "yellow matter custard."

  5. FastRMacR says LOL - Sorry (loony walrus johnywocky) :p (I get excited with Beatles trivia - I'm weird) Remember the episode with Stimpy and the history erase button? This is a precious 45rpm in my collection that I just ripped into mp3. There's an extra measure of soothing George Martin strings in there, just before John says "Yellow Matter Custard...". It's the B-side "45rpm single from that great 1967":http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hello_Goodbye, with the A-side of "Hello Goodbye". TA!

  6. marknavl says Good job, you two. Hmmm...should I make it harder next week?

  7. marknavl says The US Rarities version is almost the same as this one except on Rarities the intro has two extra piano riffs in it that the US 45 does not have. But yes, this is from the vinyl 45 and the little bit of pop and click heard when you play it could've been a giveaway too. Once again...good job!

    *lol

Yeah...the 45 was the giveaway. I wasn't sure if it was the Rarities version as I haven't played that album in ages. I was wondering why it sounded a bit distorted until I realised that it was indeed vinyl.

Keep 'em coming. Love your posts!

  9. crowleyal says LOL! A 45, huh? I thought the distortion was my bad connection from my Mac's output! (The audio out jack got damaged a little while back and doesn't reproduce audio cleanly anymore.) I own almost none of the vinyl 45s, so I've never paid much mind to what was a single and what wasn't. I wonder why they issued this version on 45 but not on the MMT LP.

  10. marknavl says The Beatles and George Martin always prepared the mono mixes first in those days and the single contained the mono mix. When the stereo mix was prepared for MMT, the extra measure was apparently edited out. I kind of think it's better without it but sometimes it's good to hear a different mix. To complicate the history a little though, the mono version of the MMT album contains the mono mix of Walrus but the extra measure has been removed there too (perhaps for the sake of consistency between the mono and stereo MMTs. So with the exception of the US Rarities album mentioned above, the "extra measure" version of Walrus was only on the 45 (and of course, here on MOG). 'Nuff said....
