Alejandro Escovedo "Real Animal" First Listen

I'm recovering from the end of year picnic and mom announces that its time for a family walk. Dressed, leashes on, find a Jawbreaker record (DGC first pressing/colored vinyl) and a Lenny Bruce box that Rhino released in the 90s that are gathering dust, and off we go. Get to Amoeba get $25 credit and grab "Real Animal." A lot of good songs: Smoke, Sensitive Boys (Is this Young Americans) Nuns Song (remember Hate Holiday? Great San Francisco band from the early 90s, Marcy was the lead singer, she worked at Villains, would not let me put their record out), I Got It Right. I highly recommend this album and you can download the song Always A Friend by clicking here.

Betty LaVette at Stern Grove

Father's Day comes once a year and this year was no exception, a lot of activity in the name of the old man. Headed out with the girls and saw friends with a big picnic blanket, "where you headed?" I cried, "to Stern Grove to see Booker T Jones" they replied. After the morning activities we headed to Stern Grove. Parking happened without a hitch and away we went with the meatball subs that joined us along the way."Ladies & gentlemen Betty LaVette" what?! I love this lady and the album, "I've Got My Own Hell To Raise" she did not disappoint a real funky set with all the trimmings! All the hits and then most of the Joe Henry produced piece a solid soul time.

One of My Jimmy McGriff Memories

In the late 90's my friend Stu called and said that Jimmy McGriff was playing at the Fairmont Hotel's now defunct Oak Room. He was in fantastic form with Zig Modeliste on drums which took the whole gig to a not-so-traditional level. The songs were extended jams that had Jimmy and Zig working in and out of different syncopation rhythms. The gig was nothing like I expected and took me to the intersection of Philadelphia and New Orleans; a strange and magical place where the groove is deep and warm. Finally, as if the night needed any more juice, and after the last note from the leslie died down, patrons were given Jimmy McGriff branded letter openers. I never received a letter from Jimmy, but he opened my heart.

A Saul Williams kind of thing

I'm wary when it comes to a superstar(in this case Trent Reznor)lending his name to an "upcoming" artist because he/she thinks this artist is great. Why? Cream rises to the top, right? If its good then the music will make it to the ears of the willing, right? I like Saul Williams and he would make it to my ears regardless of who endorses and/or produces his music. That said this track is slammin'.

Cool Joni cover from new Herbie Hancock album

I'm a big fan of cover tunes especially when they bring something new to the composition. Herbie Hancock, with the vocal talents of Tina Turner, brings a lot of "new" to Joni Mitchell's Edith and the Kingpin. Tina Turner should have her next record produced by Larry Klein, Joni Mitchell's producer or Joe Henry for a real change of pace.

The Magic Numbers San Francisco Show

Little late posting my experience but Mog I must as it has been a long time between posts. I had never seen The Magic Numbers but had enjoyed all their recorded output for the last three years. Sound was fantastic at the venue, which showcased, not only the lush and warm guitar sounds, but also the wonderful vocal harmonies unique to sibling band members. The band made great song choices from their releases and the cute on stage banter made for a wonderful evening of alternative rock.

The Heavy

Currently I'm not able to fly and must drive, train, scooter my way to appointments. On a recent trip in a rental car I enjoyed BBC Radio 1's Colin Murray http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio1/colinmurray/ dug the show and got my head ripped off by The Heavy http://www.myspace.com/theheavy73 . The band has channeled the spirit of Curtis Mayfield and given it the UK influence not heard since Pulp, The Verve, Portishead and the like... Nice!

The best search "engine" for finding music

I'll always go for word of mouth if available when searching for new, hard-to-find, or obscure music, thanks to all the Moggers who fulfill this valuable role in my life. But WOM is not always available when needed which has led me to rely on technology. The Internet (Google) is a great tool to discover music that may be a good fit for my mood and/or interests. Do any Moggers out there recommend search/discovery tools that can help me? I wish Ice Magazine was still around.

Moggers fun was had by all at The Fillmore where the mighty Ian Hunter held court to a packed house. Performing all the hits, as well as, a number of titles from his critically acclaimed last studio album Rant he blew my mind with his vocal clarity and emotion. Ian Hunter makes the kind of music that anyone can love. Nasty, gritty and radiant. I often wonder how rock & roll will continue to resonate within these bones as I cruise towards middle age; after a show like this I realize that I've got nothing to worry about. The Zombies rocked too, kudos to Colin B for keeping his vocals in top shape!

Maybe its the music or the time of year or the Anchor Christmas Ale induced haze but Jaco came into my head and heart today with a big thump. I'd go downtown to the Bottom Line, 55 Christopher, 7th Ave South or a bunch of places on the LES and he'd be playing, drinking, ranting and especially loving all of us in the seats. The records are so great but his shows, never saw him with WR, were always a transcending experience. Take me away! Speaking of experiences does anyone know if the Trio of Doom has any other recordings besides the two cuts on the Havana Jam albums - legal or otherwise? Send word Moggers!

In The Pines

They're new to me and their self-titled debut is a great album that was given to me as an after thought from a friend who doesn’t like the folksy stuff. The song subject matter is what it is but the arrangements, instrumentation and harmonies are wonderful, haunting and exhilarating. The band's myspace page http://myspace.com/inthepines gives a little info but I’d like to find out more, the bands site is sparse and offers a design heavy on image not info. Seems like they need a booking agent who can get them out of town since all the shows are in Missouri. Either way check out the music and if a Mogger knows more please contact me.
