I'm feeling kind of inspired to write a review on this one .... seems kinda special to me. It was Joanna who brought me here to MOG in the first place ( indirectly of course), and with these two new obsessions in place I think it's only right that I comment on it here. Agreed?I only heard Joanna for the first time last week when she was guest DJ on All Things Considered. I listened to that show over and over like it was my new favorite album ... I then emailed an old friend who I knew would like her, and sure enough- he's a fan, and a mogger. So, yada yada yada, I'm here:) ***Last night I went the headphone route when listening to Ys. Flat on my back, lights out, the whole nine. This is a level of attention that a busy life can only grant a very select few recordings. Joanna made the cut easily. So ... (sigh) ... these songs ... it's like they come from the earth. She tells these stories like Yeats interpreting a Bronte novel, and she acts them out with such sweet sincerity using a voice that must be (and has been I'm sure), compared to that of Bjork and Kate Bush, and Tori Amos. Some similar production similarities too, in places. Now that I think of it, I had Joanna playing in a mix recently when a friend stopped by and started giving me grief for listening to CocoRosie Again! (hehe), so maybe there's another comparison to make in the voice department.Anyway, I am a total sucker for songs like these found on Ys. Songs that can succeed in building and building until it becomes so intense that the body actually starts to convulse, ( like the song 'Only Skin' ... once those baritone voices start chanting in the background forget it, I'm hooked :) ... then just as quickly she can bring you back to a calming state reminiscent of putting on a warm coat on a chilly evening. Yum. What else can I say .... new fav:)
