music calendar

oh em gee! em oh gee!
(haha that never gets old)

MOG! what's up??

i thought i might update about my upcoming concert calendar.

july 19- ryan adams at the beverly hills wilshire theater! i'm so excited about this show. i love the new record (EASY TIGER) so much. i have only seen him once, at the hollywood bowl (which i mogged about!) and he was tiny and far away. this should be a bit more intimate. though never intimate enough, o-ho.

july 30- indie 103.1 showcase at the viper room. oh, i love the viper room. i love all the small clubish venues like that. featuring nighfur, sons and lovers, and lofi sugar as well as the stevenson ranch davidians.

wednesday nights in august- the stevenson ranch davidians residency at the echo. you've heard me talk about them forever, go see what all the fuss is about! the new material they are playing is so badass. here's a photo i took of the singer at the clean air clear stars festival in joshua tree recently:

august 18- sunset junction music festival featuring the parson redheads at 2pm!

sept 7- kings of leon at the greek theater so. excited. i've NEVER seen them and i love them so. the greek is an amazing outdoor amphitheater, i'm totally stoked.

good times

so i went to see the davidans a couple of times recently.

on friday night, they played a show at the knitting factory in hollywood. unfortunately for dwayne (the singer), his guitar was stolen during equipment load-in. boo! someone loaned him one to use and the show went on, but there was definitely a dark cloud.

after the show, a random stranger approached dwayne and was telling him how much he loved the band and their set. he was a little under the influence, so he asked if dwayne would mind driving his car to a party nearby. dwayne's always up for an adventure and said sure. they spent the evening partying, talking, etc until the wee hours. the next day, the random stranger guy emails and says something to the effect of "really loved the show, feel bad about your guitar, i want to help. go to my friend's guitar shop in santa monica and pick out whatever you want."

so he did. by wednesday, he had a brand new version of his old guitar. same color even. yay for random strangers!!!

they played another show on wednesday night, at the derby in los feliz. it was an early show with an open bar, playing with the wallpaper airplanes. it was a good time and d played his shiny new guitar.

there is goodness out there. remember that.

here's a photo i took at the knitting factory show:

aqueduct

ok so i'm STILL listening to aqueduct on repeat. the track called "unavailable" is killing me with pop perfection. it makes use of a HARP, yesss! harp for the win.

so, member the earlimart show i was going to? yeah, didn't make it. my kid was sick.
here is a review of it from los anjealous, it sounds like it was nice.
http://www.losanjealous.com/2007/03/10/earlimart-getty-3907-see-whatd-i-tell-you/

i'm also not at pappy and harriet's tonight :(
sick kid's spoiling all the fun!

a local band i have recently been turned onto is SPINDRIFT
check out their myspace and the song "red reflection"
http://www.myspace.com/thewest
it's very doorsy, venturesy, awesomeness. former members of bjm. they on on tour right now, you should see if they playing near you.

the new feist is good, huh?

whoa, hey!

OMG MOG!

i have been a bad mogger. i need to use this thing more because it's really very cute. oh, music news! such a lot of it lately! i'm glad, i was beginning to feel the dry spell.

i must say, the album i am bumpin the most lately is AQUEDUCT! it is really really good! the new one, or give me death makes me very happy. i narrowly missed seeing them at spaceland this weekend :( but THEY ARE TOURING so GO SEE THEM. they are playing cute little venues too, like the opolis in norman, oklahoma!

i missed the aqueduct show because i was being a loyal friend and going to see the dandy warhols at the wiltern on saturday w emy. it was a good time, they played "bohemian" twice and covered "your ghost" by kristen hersch.

on fridays, the getty art museum in la does this little thing on friday nights. this friday march 9 yours truly is going to see EARLIMART!!! yay, excited! are any local moggers going?

the next morning it's packing up for a road trip with the stevenson ranch davidians. they are playing pappy and harriet's in the middle of the desert, pioneer town, CA! i am taking my camera, i smell photo ops. some good davidians news is that their record is being distributed in europe! yay srd! and they are playing a local show MAR 16 at the knitting factory in hollywood. they have written some new stuff and i can't wait to hear it.

other than awesome live music, i have been listening a lot to: aqueduct (as mentioned), the new kings of leon, the new modest mouse, and the new feist. i am greedily feasting on this new music deluge while it lasts.

xoxo

hi! long time, no mog.

let's see, mandy's current music news:

-heard the tyde on sirius radio this morning. these guys are blowing up! it's nice to see an la band doin good. the tyde also contains a former member of...

-THE PARSON REDHEADS!! the love affair continues. i am eating these guys up with a fork and spoon. i am looking forward to their show dec 18 free at the echo with my darling davidians. but seriously now, they have a residency at the echo coming up and it's every monday night and it's free and it's sure to be just lovely. you should check them out. they wear all white. they have a smokin drummer. it's a good time.

- i have been listening to the thermals a lot.

-also the new willie nelson album produced by my boy ryan adams is out and is delicious and would make a good gift for someone on your list.

- i got to see modest mouse at the wiltern recently. they performed songs from their new one (we were dead before the ship even sank!!!!) and did a SMOKIN HOT "tiny cities of ashes" and it was totally awesome and johnny marr plays guitar now and here's a picture!

anton, ye hardly knew me

i've been notmogging! real life sort of happened and swept me away but i am back.

i should have a concert review, i went to safari sam's to see the brian jonestown massacre the other night. however, since it is a small club, the bands went on late. and i saw the opener- they were called tyde, there was a member of the parson redheads in the band. but everything was late and pushed back and it was a "school night" (i don't go to school but i still use the euphemism) and i started thinking about how early i had to get up to go to work the next morning and...i bailed! i bailed on bjm because i wanted to go home and go to bed. how rock n roll am i? answer: not very. :(

also, put me in a room full of hipsters and then time me. i will last less than half an hour. all those beautiful people are kind of intimidating, you know? i had a gigantic cosmo (kind of yuvk) and a beer and called it a night while the opener was still playing.

los anjealous strikes again

so. i checked my favorite concert calendar this morning. (good list, huh? i LIVE here! it's so awesome for music! the bad part is that there are so many shows i have to miss because i just can't go to everything.) and i saw that devendra is playing the echo next month! this is something i have been keeping an eye out for, i knew he had moved to la and i was just betting on a small club show sometime soon. yay!

also, have you heard the stevenson ranch davidians? they are a local la band that i love and adore. there's only one show upcoming (oct 4 at the silverlake lounge) but go check out the music on their site. they finished a full length earlier this year and it's awesome.

everything all the time

guess what i got in the mail today? my band of horses ticket! i know i've mentioned them already, but i am in. love. with. them. they are the current obsession. love grew deeper with their new video for "great salt lake". it features a game of softball in a seattle park, i remember reading on their website where they invited fans to the taping. yay softball/baseball!!

last time they played here i was just getting interested in them, and i had a ticket to the musical event of the summer (ok, MY musical event of the summer- built to spill at the troubadour) the same night. so now that i am all entrenched in band of horses, i will get to see them next month. whee.

this is the kind of thing that keeps me going.

i like a mog! although it is embarassing that everyone can see that i've listened to jacksonville city nights approximately 8 times in a row. today. that's how i listen to music, though. falling in love requires many playbacks.

i want to talk about ryan adams some more

he is in my thoughts, as i sit here in that morning after the show state of mind still.

you know, i think it's really cool the way he is so prolific, and the way he seems to go through "phases" in his music. and of course, he is definitely doing the grateful dead thing ever since cold roses. meaning that he is influenced by, and nods to. not that he is a crappy imitation.

i think it's really awesome that he is successfully pulling off his style of music and attracting musical legends like phil lesh and willie nelson. he obviously loves it, and i personally love that he has come to this place because he WANTS to. and we get to listen to what he puts in front of us.

the thing i love is that he is doing it HIS way, ryan's way. he is not like some string cheese incident/widespread panic/gd family band. YAY. having experienced way too much of that particular genre of granola jam funk rock, i am happy to see more of what i originally loved about the dead: blues influence, country influence, and rock n roll. somehow with some of the other "trickledown bands", a lot of that has gotten lost. and they all sound the same. but not ryan, because he is influenced by and not mimicing.

you know? he's just so cool. and really cute. 3 albums a year? bring it on!.

we got there for the end (maybe the last 3 songs) of neko case. i like her sound, she sounds so old school. and yes, she is pretty but she seemed older than i thought she was. and she had a bad wardrobe choice that made her look even older. i really love the look of her site, and i enjoy her music. she was delghtful for what i saw of her.

after neko ended, we sat back, expecting a set break. but a kcrw dj came out and announced, "ladies and gentlemen, ryan adams and the cardinals!" and the stage ROTATED around and he was there! it was fabulous! i scratched out a setlist in the dark and ryry helped me this morning by pointing me to a msg board for comparison. i am having a hard time reconsiling them with mine though.

cold roses
peaceful valley
the american cheeseburger song?
??
a kiss before i go
magnolia mountain
please do not let me go
stella blue
shakedown on 9th st
wharf rat (grateful dead cover)

ryan was amazing, i love him so much. i wish i could see him in a much more intimate venue and see a full set. phil lesh played half the set and they did a lot of jamming out. they almost did another grateful dead song, i heard it brewing but it did not come to fruition. ryan was looking so cute, and he bantered about eggs and cheeseburgers and he wore a batman shirt. sigh, so cute.

between sets i met this rad girl from here (mog)! she is cool, we met up and talked for a little bit. i hope to see her around again. these cool internets, man!!!

then, it was willie. he unfurled a big ol texas flag onstage. he had his sister bobbi sue and his 2 sons micah and lucas playing, and jody payne. i was pretty much very excited the whole time. he is 73 years old and he is a legend. i was just so grateful to be able to see him.

here is some of what i remember from his set

whiskey river
funny how time slips away/crazy/night life medley
sounds like the blues
working man's blues (merle haggard cover sung by jody payne)
down yonder (instrumental from red headed stranger feat bobbi sue on piano)
help me make it through the night
me and bobby mcgee
me and paul
texas flood (srv cover feat lucas on guitar and vocals. he's kinda cute!)
mamas don't let your babies grow up to be cowboys
angel flying too close to the ground
on the road again
always on my mind
good hearted woman in love w a good timing man (waylon cover

the whole thing was over by 10:30. i got a probably too-small ryan adams shirt (they didn't have adult small???) that i will give to my son if it shrinks. i feel lucky to have seen this show, but i can't help thinking about tales of 3 hour willie sets at rose state college, or tales of long ryan adams sets that my friends have seen. but it was amazing to see everyone in the same night. and i met a mog friend!

all in all, A-plus!

i have been listening to vetiver all day long. both albums and the ep. i like them a lot. they are a "devban" band i guess, but i think they stand alone.

here is my favorite song of theirs right now.

so, yeah! vetiver!!

current obsession

band of horses: everything all the time

i haven't fallen in love with a record like this in a long time. all i can do is hope that they put out another one soon.

i heard "the first song" when ryan put it on a mix for a party i had. i liked it a lot, wall of sound, lots of reverb, delicate vocals. it definitely stood out in the mix. then, jaime posted a song on his vox that totally sparked my interest. then i got the whole album and the live tour ep and now i am HOOKED.

it's the kind of record that i listen to over and over and over. it's the kind of record that makes me close my eyes and lean my head back. it's filled with brilliant moments and mostly just that indescribable feeling more than anything else. i like them the way that i like built to spill, and that's saying a lot for a band with only one album.

they are coming here in october, and i will go. i will probably go alone, because like bts, they are a band that seems to be very personal to me. this album will probably forever be associated with this time in my life, this crazy summer of driving around deep in my own thoughts.

"if i am lost it's only for a little while"

black rebel motorcycle club at the echo, fri 8.25.06

so the brmc boys played a warmup gig before their sunset junction appearance, and i was lucky enough to hear about it and get advance tickets. i went with my friends from The Stevenson Ranch Davidians (have you heard them? check it out).

the first opener was Kristin Keene (i think?). she had a very hope sandoval type vocal thing going on, but i thought she was a little more saucy and western/bluesey. she played solo electric guitar with a friend on tambourine. it was pared down and lofi and i really dug it.

the second band was the karabal nightlife. i, um, actually fell asleep during them. i'm sure it was the one beer i had and not the band. i get all drowsy when i drink. ahem.

my disco nap served me well and i made my way to the front for brmc. yay! this is what they look like these days, (taken from the sunset junction press)

mmm, i just love them. i love how loud they are with just 3 people. i love how they play together and how they split the lead vocals. i saw them earlier this year on the tour for howl and i expected them to play a lot more from that new record, but friday night was pretty much greatest hits mashup. here are the highlights from what i remember:
white plams
red eyes and tears
love burns
us government
whatever happened to my rock n roll
sympathetic noose
gospel song
spread your love
aint no easy way out
weight of the world
six barrel shotgun

that's not the order and there were more but that's what stood out. it was an excellent, excellent show. i feel really lucky and grateful that i got to go.

guess where i'm going tonight

to an unannounced/surprise black rebel motorcycle club show at a small venue in la called the echo. word got around enough that the event is sold out. should be a hot sweaty rock n roll time. the only question is, do i bring my camera? i know they allow it at the venue and i could get some amazing photos, but do i want to fight my way through the crowd and be "working" during the set? or do i just want to give in and give up and be carried away by the music?

brmc is in town because they are playing the hipster-laden sunset junction street fair on saturday night. i will probably try to check it out, but i am way excited for the more intimate venue tonight.

i saw them earlier this year at the henry fonda theater and it was an amazing show. i'm super excited.
