Wanted to mention that this Canadian band is well worth the listen, but certainly their live show is what needs to be experienced to understand. An interesting concept, they play really danceable house, electronic, and breakbeat, and they do it all live. There’s 3 of them, keyboards providing the melodies and such, and a bassist and drummer for rhythm. I have to show an appreciation for the drummer. He plays alot of 4 on the floor type beats, which has a dual benefit here as being highly accessible for the audience as well as being highly interchangeable between parts and improvs. But in their simplicity, he plays with all the screws down tight, with a steady power supply, even live, he sounds very much so, like the best full sounding drum machine you ever heard. He has a bunch of delays and effects and triggers set up during shows to push even further the electronic feel. As far as a band goes on stage, these guys seem to do alot of communication between each other, with a variety of signals, constantly signaling, watch for it, its happening all the time.
I went to a show last fall at Roxy and the spring before that downstairs at the Middleast, and both times were freaking awesome. A friend of mine at studio gave me a bootlegged show to listen to when he told me about the middleast show and I thought I would check it out. The atmosphere at the show was truly special. Everyone was just entranced with their improvisations, songs and beats just flowing between idea and idea after idea, very seamless. I’m not a club person, the live band scene is by far, not even part of a comparison, but this band twists that philosophy, bring the live band to act as a club sound system. [this being said, electronic and house playing clubs are infinitely superior to clubs that are playing hip hop, its just my opinion, i have my reasons]. Both shows I was at, they played a shorter first set, took a real short break for like 10minutes, and came out for a much longer second set, and a very drawn out closing/encore. they didn’t really encore, they just mentioned that it was almost time to quit, and then played a wild house beat that just kept morphing for what seemed like an hour, it was awesome.
I think they play alot on this side of the continent, northeast, and that side of Canada, it seems like they are in Boston a few times a year, which is fine by me. Their albums are ok, more of the chill out and relax type of vibe, if you are interested in checking out the recorded music, bootlegs are available around the web if you look for shows, the live recordings and albums showcase their improv. philosophy + abilities to a better effect than the studio albums, but both are good. look for their debut album This Is Live, which I think is from their first live show(1999), or Live:Late Night 8.27.05 is a really good show they have on CD, and let me know what you think. http://www.thenewdeal.ca/
