Love of Diagrams :: In My Dream b/w Too Long (Free Field Records 003, Nov. 2011)

The Australian 3-piece is back at it again with a dreamy single. Love of Diagrams still channel the strong post-punk vertebrae. Two straight-forward downplayed numbers, albeit layered under a strata of shoegazey material and Antonia's sweet surf voice. The A-side is a fun outing, while Too Long is a slightly more taut passage back to their punk routes. It seems the band is busy working towards a newer sound, as was first demonstrated on last years Nowhere Forever, forgoing some of the stark punk tensions found on Mosaic for a richer, dreamier sonic realm. I would hazard a comparison to The Raveonettes right now, perhaps you hear that too? This single shows that the band has not slowed down at all with these shoegaze experiments while still maintaining their signature economy of means; all for the better in my opinion. Hopefully this release signals a fourth album in the near forecast.

Darn good!  I've never heard of this band before.  I love the way they combine straightforward rock with dreampop/shoegaze (?)--not sure exactly what to label it and that's not bad!

In My Dream is hypnotizing.  It's cool how the lead singer's voice (in both songs) kind of blends in well with all of the instruments....instead of being louder.  It does not sound swallowed up in any way, which is rare, I think....it just WORKS.

Thanks again for the intro to a good band!

    Well hai everyone!

Dave - of course I DID suspect that this would ring true in your most noble and discerning of ears. I am glad to hear you are a fan of the Diagrams, a most excellent band that does get it right when it comes to channeling the post-punk sounds of the 70s. Though now, I like where they are taking the sound these days.

Andrea, I really agree with what you say above, everything gets its due recognition in the mix and it does WORK, quite well. You know, I think I am inclined towards bands that are not afraid to keep the vocal in with the rest of the music, rather than giving it the volume rights front and center. I am glad you enjoyed the tunes!

Thanks for such great comments on this one! Um, if it so suits you, I have posted on Love of Diagrams before:

Though there isn't a song there anymore, so for safety's sake. =)
