Enon :: In This City (from High Society - Touch & Go, Jun. 2002)

photo: taken on November 19, facing south-west towards the Hudson River and the mid-town skyline. Buildings include, Tower 111 on the left, The New York Times Building by Renzo Piano on the right. I am standing on the 69th floor of the GE Building at Rockefeller Center.

And a nicely paired song, please listen to Enon's In This City. It is a beautiful song that snuck up on me this week. Enon is a fantastically underrated group. They fit right between Les Savy Fav's brand of post-punk and Brainiac's brand of oddity.

I don't mention these other amazing bands in the sense of illustrating Enon's music in any way derivative. Merely as suggestive points of departure. You like Les Savy Fav. You will probably find something in Enon. I also pick these bands because Enon's members have a history with both of them. That amazing vocal you hear in this song is by singer Toko Yasuda. She provided a backing vocal in early LSF song The Orchard (check it out). And all three members contributed on LSF's 2007 Let's Stay Friends.

As for the Brainiac connection, Enon was formed as the drop-out band by the remaining guys after Timmy Taylor's death. This song came in on shuffle the other day and I have been spinning 2002's High Society. Listen Listen Listen.

    I'm listening!

I dig her soft voice, the clackety percussion and those "space age" synth twiddles ;-)

    Nice photograph too, MSS

sweet track! not yet sunk my teeth into Brainiac, but LSV is creeping into rotation. you've provided plenty of groove fodder here...
hey, there is a town called "Enon" about 30 mi NE of me! (see map)

since I used to live very near another local villiage named "Eaton", the similarity in [slurred] pronunciation has, at times, led to momentary confusion. Now that I've outed my locale, stop by for drinks and a swim after the spring thaw...

Man I loved Brainiac. Saw them several times before the death of their singer. I am sure I posted on them several years back.

I have casually listened to Enon. They seem to really change from album to album.

Here and here are my two old Brainiac posts.

Thanks for the Enon. Been a while since I tried to get into them. They just weren't Brainiac, even though I am a sucker for these vocals.

    look at this:

Enon - The name 'Enon' means: Cloud; mass of darkness; fountain; eye (from Hitchcocks’s Dictionary of Bible Names--1874)

oatmeal, that is really amazing. what was the show like?! very lucky you got to seem them. I agree with you, High Society is so catchy, but the other one I have Grass Geysers has a lot of distortion and not-melody. thanks for the links, I'll take a look.

dash, thanks for the listen, I would suggest High Society as a starting point, personally.

briangm, hi! I so glad and I will admit surprised there is such a fantastic Enon, and Brainiac following here! Martha Stewart just told me its a good thing. Disposable Parts is another great one from this album.

scot, it is my intention to subliminally suggest geographical and other  phenomenological clues, just as a general rule :). Enon the town, that is a coincidence, no? It turns out that there are 4 Enon's in the US, as well as one in Nova Scotia, and a mission in South Africa.

dave, yea! the minimalism of the sounds really "resonate" with me in this particular song. it uses the sci-fi twiddles sparsely and I like that here. her voice carries a lot of the tune I think.

musixRX, thanks! sorry I took so long for getting back to your comment, but I appreciate everyone who listens, not to mention your poignant use of bold font :)

    as an additive:

here is the LSF song that Toko did vocals for on the opening song to The Cat & The Cobra. awesome, this is from 1999, before Toko had joined Enon.

Scot - if I am reading your map correctly, can we suggest the changing of Springboro's name to Scotfree? Or Scotfreeboro if more suitable?  :)

hhmmm....mayhap I should found my own community? thinking...thinking...should I nab the mayor/supreme lord commander spot, or go for the court jester????

I could see you in a similar role as the Adam West on Family Guy. The wacky mayor could be a popular hit in Scotfreeboro. You have to name it that, you just have to.

I really appreciate the attachment of the map in comments. that is very well done sir.

well, now that things are quieting down around here - I certainly have time to work on someting like that. Can I cast you as the official building inspector, prone to leaping from job to job as a way to clear the boredom cobwebs of repetitive paperwork???  hmm, we need a sherrif, some one to hold in high regard...deadman?

I think dmdm is probably the new sherrif that will be needed in the hard, early formative years ahead in our brave new world. Of course I would be honored to hold such a role, but could I apply for the office of planning?

Scot, remember the good times around the holidays when someone like Dale would put together a Mog Secret Santa? those were the holidays that I looked forward to. sadly, they don't happen around these parts anymo''
