Sunday's Sinking Sun #1.1

Posted over 1 year ago

Right now, I am sitting at home after a well endured and spent weekend. Malted barley lager with a warm Sunday in November requires a slow-burned vegetable stew with a smokey element to permeate dead leaves. As Sunday's sun lists low in the sky, thought I could share one of the records that I pulled out whilst getting ready for the week.

Here is something from Bellini 's Small Stones LP.

This band is a tight rockin' outfit with members from Sciliy, New York, and New Mexico. Agostino Tilotta, and his wife Giovanna Cacciola (both from Italy's Uzeda), Matthew Taylor (from The Romulans) and Alexis Fleisig (Girls Against Boys, and Soulside) make up the group. It's great honest punk and math rock music of a focused, structured and brutal stock.

Small Stones was their sophmore release in 2005 through Temporary Residence. Recorded in a whirlwind 5-day session in a dilapidated studio in Austin, TX with Steve Albini during August 2004, then later mixed at Electrical Audio in Chicago, IL. Music by Agostino. Lyrics and melodies by Giovana.

nice. i'm always up for Albini's many projects. i really dig Uzeda and thought they got far less attention than they should have. Giovanna's vocals are awesome. funny enough, she was the second person that came to mind after i heard Karen O for the first time.

i thought you might appreciate this! i got into their work backwards, starting with Bellini. now i am devouring as much Uzeda as I can economically and on a budget. yes to giovanna's singing, i love the song in the post and the line "you should be scared...and you're not!" i like the matter-of-fact deliver. i am in agreement witht he Karen O sound, now that you mention it, they are very similar in sound, but not style?

hey, mss, it's so great that you're into Uzeda and Bellini. thanks for the track, i love that one. allow me to reciprocate with another Uzeda song, recycled from one of my older posts. this one comes from the 4 EP, also Albini-produced, which came out before the Different Section Wires album. you may have it already but, if not yet, it's an awesome record.

yeah, Giovanna and Karen O definitely don't have the same style, it's more the vocals. i don't actually own any Bellini, i should get with it. thanks again!

aw, wish i could download this, right now I have 4 songs, 2 from Wires and 2 from Stella, so this track and any others are greatly appreciated, I will buy an album eventually, I haven't heard anything that makes me doubt this band in the slightest. would you recommend one of their albums to start with?

as for these 2 singers, they just sound so similar in voice, they could be the same person, just singing towards a different goal in her other band. Karen O, heh, thats a pseudonym if I ever heard one. I am curious, who was the first person you thought of before Giovanna?

well, i had the 4 EP and Different Section Wires in re-tapes (i still have them back home, i think) and i'd say they are the still the best ones. i got to listen a lot, too, to Out of Colours (i thought they were still feeling their way at this point) and Stella (which rocks, but it may be better to start off with the earlier stuff). so, okay, maybe start with Wires...?

i first thought of PJ Harvey, only because i saw Karen O before i heard YYY, and thought they had the same look. and then they have that similarly low voice and punk sound (early PJH) but i guess the similarities end there.

hey, so i didn't know the dude from Don Cab was in Bellini. i only realized after you included them in your tags. awesome.

I'll grab Wires then, might have to be an early xmas gift to myself as I am really enjoying all of their stuff alot right now.

ok, yea, PJH, i see that too. I think the Karen O connection is right on though. she is the euro doppleganger of Karen.

yea Damon Che at first, but then replaced by Girls Against Boys' drummer Alexis

thanks Poebegone for the great comments! also just found this Uzeda interview on southern records if you are interested

Wow! The Buffalo Song is throbbing, compelling careening on that guitar cascade!  I am reeling.  I'm ready to explore more Bellini.  Thanks.
