WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

Cosmonaut

I saw At the Drive-In by accident when they opened for Rage Against the Machine in Worcester, some 6 or 7 years ago. It was after Vaya, but before Relationship of Command. They sucked about as hard as any band could. Everyone there including me was holding their ears and pleading for Cedric to shut his manic wailing and even more manic jumping from the bass drum. Just terrible, I wrote them off from there. When I started listening to the Mars, I eventually found out that *surprise*, they had been spawned from that same infamous band. Even later I started listening to some of the albums and now I can say that I dig them alot. But can you really trust me, I mean, I heard them, and I felt the ear drum pain. Maybe its the difference between tastes now and 7 years old, or maybe its the difference between amps, and studio effects, or maybe it was just a crappy mixing levels problem at the show. One thing can be said, they went as ballistic for 30 minutes as they do in this clip, just no one was buying itthis was the tour that the Beasties for supposed to be supporting Rage, but then Mike D had to go for a bike ride and got wrecked by a NYC pothole, infrastructure maintenance aside, the beastie boys canceled the tour and At the Drive-In was added to fill their spot, something like that...

  1. Spencer Owen says It is probably a combination of shifting tastes and an off night for the band (and the crowd energy). If other people disliked it as much as you did, visibly, they probably weren't having a grand time. Just, y'know... some ideas.

  3. subtlefury says I love Relationship of Command, and I found it because of the Mars Volta too. But somehow I don't dig their earlier stuff, must be the poor mixing, I guess.
