A look upward, an acute angle

Posted almost 3 years ago

Here is an old song. Old in an oblique sense of relativity. Trans-continental delivery. The vocalist is also the sax player and this song is a riot. A skronk-inflected horn and circular riffs give way to an earnest howl. Of course it's Saturday and this tune is my 9v battery. +/- makes no difference. Resistance is not reason to not hit play. I sincerely apologize as of late for my intermittent posts and complete lack of participation. I'll be back like a certain Governor soon enough. Is it just I or is this place slightly hollow sounding as of late? Is this echoing into oblivion? Similar to the majority of my loves, this band is defunct. Take these bullets as references to the sounds:

  • Chicago
  • 1997
  • Power-math that swings
  • 1 alto saxophone
  • Intriguing number sequence: 4 9 21 30
  • Divot Records
  • Steve Sostak: also of Check Engine, ZZZZ
  • Chris Daly: also of Just A Fire, Haymarket Riot

They have a couple of albums (first is the finest IMO) and splits. One of which is a pretty stellar, if slightly novelty in concept, split w/ Haymarket Riot. Side A is STLJ's cover of the Police's Synchronicity I, followed up on the B by Haymarket's version of Synchronicity II. Heh, I know what you are thinking. It could possibly be one of two lines of thought:

  1. I love the Police!
  2. What?

Both are valid responses. I am tempted to put this on the dark side, leave a comment if you think you need more of this.

i hesitated until i saw the name "Haymarket Riot"...  could no longer resist the magical red button... groovy in a way that sounds older than it probably is.  this is from 1997?  could easily be from 60's.  or 1991.  hard to say for sure.

heh, i was looking the Haymarket riot reference up on wiki because I was curious. turns out it is a worker's rally that turned into a riot in 1886. that said, did you catch the karate kid reference of 'Sweep the leg Johnny?'.. can not pass that one up...

the sounds are distorted from the vinyl rip, not very good quality at all. but i really like these guys
