WE DO THE MASHED POTATO AND THE FUNKY CHICKEN

Mogwai -- Live

So, saw Mogwai Saturday night at the Fillmore. Second time I've seen them perform but the first complete show.I still can't name songs, not surprising given their song titles ("A cheery wave from stranded strangers" or "Mogwai Fear Satan" to name two) and preference for insturmentals, but boy was it a fun show. Pensive to expansive. Songs do actually have beginnings and they eventually end. But that's about it. They have an interesting (but not new) approach to dynamics. And they play their guitars are really, really loud. My kinda band. Most interesting to me was the crowd. (I really loved the music, but I've already said that.) I would describe Saturday's house at the Fillmore as extremely respectful of the what the band is doing with songs. Where there were extended silences or low-volume drones within songs, you could hear a pin drop in the audience. Compared to most gigs at the Fillmore where the cocktail chatter and "house" noise are practically deafening, this crowd could have been at Davies Symphony Hall.
