Stopped in on the latest instantiation of Phil & Friends the other night. It's been a year or more since my last Phil show and this one was, frankly, damn good. Of particular note was the newest (and youngest by far) member, Jackie Green. He is truly a kid but an excellent multi-instrumentalist. And he "gets it" in terms of what Phil's looking for...At one point after he'd traded leads with Larry Campbell on guitar, then run over to the keyboards to add some fills, I thought to myself "What's next, the harmonica?" Of course, the harmonica came out next. (I think it might have been on "Mississippi Uptown Toodle-oo, or maybe Jackie's "so hard to find my way...)Anyhoo, other highlights (look, there were multiple dueling-guitar-gasms between Larry and Jackie, I'm not going to go into them here other than to say the "shakedown-althea" duo was truly awesome) included Lil' Stevie Berlin sitting in for all of first set. Unfortunately, the first third was marred by a truly noxious mix. Phil and Molo create a fearsome, yet nuanced, rhythm section. Really, the band is something to see/hear. And dammit, it's really neat to see Phil having such a good damn time.
