It's been five years since the global neo-soul rock group of Maroon 5 hit the musical market and now - they are back with their much-anticipated sophomore album, It Won't Be Soon Before Long.
The follow-up to the 10x platinum, Grammy-winning Songs About Jane will be "sexier and stronger," according to frontman Adam Levine, who looked to '80s icons such as Prince, Michael Jackson, and Talking Heads for inspiration. Recorded at home in Los Angeles with producers Mike Elizondo (Fiona Apple, Eminem), Mark "Spike" Stent (Bjork, Keane, Gwen Stefani), Mark Endert (Madonna, Fiona Apple), and Eric Valentine (Queens of the Stone Age, Nickel Creek), the album promises to be a louder take on the pop sounds of their first effort. "It's definitely aggressive, upbeat and pounding," says Levine.
The album contains 12 songs, starting with "If I Never See Your Face Again" a very catchy retroish R&B influented pop song which after a few listen becomes irressistable. First single "Makes Me Wonder" that even topped the charts for a week is brilliant and very meliodic. I think the song is about being in a relationship with someone that you don't really like. "Little Of Your Time" is more rock infleunced with some basic riffs, lyrics are not so deep and feel like more of a easygoing sing-a-long song. It barely over 2 minutes which is rare!.
"Wake Up Call" should be the second single, a polished rock song with great hook, that deals with cheating. Will be a hit. A great power ballad called "Won't Go Home Without You," got everything that a good song should have. Another "She Will Be Loved" perhaps?. "Nothing Last Forever" a sweet slow-paced song about the inevitable breakup in a relationship when two people turn out to be too diffrent, even if they still love each other. Another fantastic song which got the same hook as the West/Levine duet "Hear Em' Say." "Can't Stop" a rock song with plety of grit, is completely diffrent from the previous song, still good. "Goodnight, Goodnight" a sad and melancholy power-ballad where Levine appologized for hurting a girl.
Retro sounding "Not Falling Apart" which is another bad realationship song makes it obvious that they are influenced by New Wave bands, the song is strong and grows on you for each listen. "Kiwi" is one of the songs I don't really like alot, I can tell you it's not about the fruit. However, it got alot of raw power and nice horn sounds. "Better the We Break" a classic ballad that is very slow and sensitive.
"Back At Your Door" portrays a soulish ballad that sounds polished but not flashy, could have been a early hit for Hall & Oates. There are plenty of bonus songs on diffrent CD versions and honestly, this CD rocks. It's like no other!

  1. River Lethe says Well, with their first album, I often described them as a white Stevie Wonder backed by a rock band. This time around, Levine seems to have moved from Stevie to Prince and MJ, like you said. They were also obviously listening to the Police, as three separate tracks invoke this sound (Won't Go Home Without You almost a direct imitation of the guitar melodies in Every Breath You Take, at least until the chorus comes in; Can't Stop has a quasi-reggae breakdown like the Police used to do; and Not Falling Apart again invokes Synchronicity-era Police). Little of Your Time could've have been an Andre 3000 track. Goodnight Goodnight begins with the same exact notes as an awful 3 Doors Down song, but thankfully veers into Chris Cornell territory (seriously, imagine Cornell doing vocals on this when you listen to it), and will probably be featured in an episode of Grey's Anatomy next season. It's a much more polished and produced affair than the last record; they apparently know that after Levine became the goto guy for hip-hop guest vocals after their popularity surge, that if they produced their follow-up more like a pop/R&B record that they'd have crossover hit potential. All that being said, I like just as many tracks on this album as I did the first, and I imagine this will stay in heavy summer rotation for me.

  3. Lizziegreeneyes says I'm liking this second one quite a bit - think it will overtake my apreciation of the first ... it's more solid (on first few listens) & couldn't agree more mOnadikh - Kiwi is a little too ripe - shoulda been thrown out - not put out with the rest of fresh fruit ... I'm bananas for the first track - a terrific way to get me hooked into a new album right at the start. Adam & co. have grown up some since their last album & it shows ... I get the feeling the first half of the album is about someone who broke his heart & the second half is ripe with the possibility of a new love(r). Still have at least 6 more listens before I am totally able to digest & reflect - thus far though - they've got my full attention :)
