WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

it really gets under my skin

Posted over 2 years ago
my musical mind is like a maze of random notes, chords and lyrical refrains. i start with something that is often random and often it twists and turns and winds itself into something else, and then another something, and then upside down and around again. tanya donelly's acrobat led me to catherine wheel's sun staring that led to this song that always gives me those surface of the skin and down to the soul chills. this song reminds me of side a of a mixed tape that i played endlessly the summer of '92. it reminds me of driving to san francisco, and stopping at big sur to try and visit the henry miller museum. it was closed and julia was asleep in the back of the car. i was not even a year into being a mother, still in awe, and still scared of everything. he had already left us by then, the first leaving, that is. i wrote postcards to pen pals because this was pre-internet, and i sang a lot to the road, to my baby daughter, to the ocean out the window, and to myself.music, she has always been saving my life.lucy.

  1. Dale says I still Love Ferment, I never miss feeling something special whenever I listen to it. That album got a lot of play in late 92 into early 93, as I dealt with the joys and frustrations of married life, and a new job that became a career. While "Black Metallix" got most of the MTV love, this song made its way onto many mixtapes I made. Please accept this as a long-distance *hug*, from further away than usual.

  3. Dale says I need to give Adam & Eve more of a chance. I really liked Delicious, but didn't listen to the rest of it. And thanks for letting me hog the space in your posts and catch up. As many other means of communication as we have, this remains something special, because of the shared musical landscapes, and the emotional responses we attach to the songs. What I'm saying, is that I've missed your posts here. Alas, it's midnight, and music drunk as I am, I'd best get to sleep if I intend to get up and make turkey dinner for eleven people, to be done by noon. Good night; it's been a pleasure, as always.

  4. indiepixie says hey there lucy. i love the way you write and were able to express that moment. I know we've all had those moments of confusion, frustration, or indecisiveness......and music helps us thru. for me it was wonderwall in the late 90s. non-stop. :)

  5. poebegone says awesome post. i still love Ferment. i am a one song leads to another type as well. my summer of '92 music was a lot of Slanted and Enchanted. our schoolyear ends in March here, the same month summer begins - in '92 i was going to graduate on time, end of story, then i fell in love, flunked P.E. (4 days of attendance in the whole semester), did not graduate, and pretty much nothing went as planned.

  6. Mike the Knife says Those moments...all strung together like a chain of pain, wonder, happiness, anger, enlightenment, and on, and on. And we can give them a soundtrack if we like. Not a bad way to stay engaged in the story of a life...
