Architecture in Helsinki at Henry Fonda Theater, and really cute nerdy hipsters.

I hope someone on U Tube posts a video from tonights show...my ears are still ringing and perhaps that is why this is the best time to share some thoughts on the performance. Doors opened at 7pm so my friend Christine and I figured 9pm would be adequate timing. We were wrong, and had to sit through a long set by unnamed band which we were really trying to like along with most of the crowd, but they couldn't win me over; long jam sessions, constant wailing through a vocoder, overly synth... I felt a bit flustered and desperate for AIH to hopefully get me out of the mood we had fallen into. I totally missed Yacht which was the only other set I wanted to see. So the following is what I'm walking away with this evening after dancing my ass off along with resident Angelino hipsters on a not so crowded dance floor. I will call it "Superb Team Dynamics" ... if you have ever seen them live this makes sense to you. They all play just about every instrument on stage, jump from percussions to guitar, to Keys, to tambourine, back to percussions, to Trombone... it's brilliant, they smile and dance and talk to each other while maneuvering through their set. And Dance, a-lot, like the whole time. I was impressed by their willingness to share the stage; sometimes, oftentimes in most bands, the guitarists has his space, the drummer has his, the vocalist does what he wants, and the bass player does his thing in the corner... with AIH you roam where you please, I think the only rule those guys have on stage is to go where the dance takes you. I even caught bits of some terribly sweet interpretive dance and fits of spazzing as well. I turned to Christine at least four times through the show to tell her how happy this was making me, it really was, they were making me so freaking happy. They dance like I dance when no one is around, i felt a connection, like maybe we were on the same dance team in the before time...yeah, we must have been. In graciousness they thanked LA too many times through the set and told us how wonderful we are, it was quite sweet...then we danced... have I mentioned that we danced? Great live show, they are true performers, and absolutely love what they do. No pretentiousness, you know which bands I'm talking about, I really like Interpol etc, but live its so depressing sometimes. And I also loved all the nerdy hipster girls that came out to watch, precious as ever. Even your questionable dancing skills are precious, the fanny packs, yeah that too, it wins me over. AIH are supposed to come back in the fall and I highly recommend doing whatever possible to see them.Cheers,I need some sleep. here is an example of AIH en Vivo.Enjoy!

  1. chucky says I'm usually too reserved to dance in a public place like that - but, I'd love to see a band that could move me to do so - sounds like a fabulous time.

  2. lmnop805 says It was really the band that did it. Their moving around was infectious, it was a fab time. Most of the crowd was willing to dance as well, so that made it easier for the less than stellar dancers and shy ones to give up their cool stance. Yeah, it totally set a new standard for my next show.

  6. lmnop805 says I insert in back pockets... and if I don't have pockets i fidget for a second before resting two fingers up near my face, pretending to be in "intellectual delve music mode." Always safe.

  9. Anonymous says yeah, i think this dude was on some good stuff & yet so sad - just when he thought no one was looking, there's a camera in his face. I thought it was funny how the person filming had to drift away from the main act and film this crazy guy dancing instead-ha And that's the theater I saw Travis at btw, it's really neat because it's a small venue, so the band can get intimate and stuff. I got to be front row last time I went & it was sweet. there's seats on the 2nd floor also, but then it's not as fun as being on the main floor because you miss some of the action. Like a guitar solo. lol ! :D glad you had a great time!

  10. aeolusxiv says YEAH! i know that kind of gig! though in taiwan not much interesting going on, but i had that experience before. i usually don't dance (another shy kid) in front of strangers, and honestly i'm not a good dancer at all, but i do love to dance with the musik which MOVES me!! i think the vibe is one major key to that! rock on!!!
