What did you hear in your older brother or sisters room?

Posted over 5 years ago
I was just thinking about this the other day. My older sis was a 70's girl and I used to sit outside her room and hear Earth Wind and Fire, Stevie Wonder and Led Zep. My middle sis was a punk rocker turned rasta so I used to hear the Slits and the Bad Brains coming from her room. Funny to think about. What did you hear? I'm talking about music, of course.

  2. champy says Unfortunately I don't have any brothers or sisters so I guess I will have to settle for cousins. My cousins are from New York and an average a good five years older than myself. But my most memorable experiences with them have always revolved around music, because they were always really into hip hop, more specifically east coast rap. I thank them for any hip hop knowledge that I do have! Good post btw

  4. sugarbaby says My sister is seven years older than me and I used to love sneaking into her room to look at her albums. She introduced me to The Beatles, Elton John and then disco, but the biggest influence was Kiss. I was fascinated by what they looked like - the big hair, the shiny make-up and the platform shoes... not that it was really so foreign - I grew up in Brooklyn after all, but to see GUYS wearing that stuff was just crazy. Peter Criss was one of my first crushes. It was the cat thing.... and Gene Simmon's tongue was too scary for a seven year old...

  5. kb says def funny to think about: older sis: kinks, who, stones, floyd, doors, talking heads, that direction... older bro: genesis, police, gtr, led zep, dead, male rockers... mom: teddy p, marvin, aretha, anyone af.am. dad: beach boys, alt country, reggae, all over the map feeling like a kaleidoscope/ myriad of it all, plus phish, wilco, ani, from myself mixed with my husband's more alternative, indi, house blend.

  6. SWozniak says I'm the oldest. My younger brother's taste is all over the place (but mostly stuff you can find in a KMart, since that's pretty much the only place he buys CDs - it's across the street). My sister LOVES Pearl Jam, but has some similar taste to my brother. And both overlap a few artists with me, which makes it cool, cuz we can have fun at a show together.

  9. KebStarr says My older bro, my only bro, listened to Metallica when he was 13 (so I was 8) then death metal, then Christian rock. I don't even know what he listens to now. He liked Lenny Kravitz when he was in uni.

  10. etcvisitor says my brother turned me on to punk rock and death metal... i still love it. my dad turned me on to new wave... that is the weird thing. he was a total audiophile and he had one of the first CD players in the neighborhood... in fact i want to say it was an early model before they were actually consumer grade. well, the deal is between his vinyl and CDs i came out being a big fan of Men at Work... and he also turned me on to Bob Marley and some other stuff. he always says he wished he had never exposed me to rock n roll. that's when i tell him, at least it gave me some variety from all of the punk rock and death metal. and then i laugh in his face.

  11. lemontwist says Hm, my (older) sister and I sort of started listening to music together, though it was mostly top 40 stuff. I graduated into 90s rock, and my sister didn't really follow, and we sort of drifted apart for awhile (for other reasons), so I never really gained a musical education from her. My little brother didn't really start listening to music until last year, as he entered college. But he doesn't listen to much stuff that I like, so... sadly, I don't think I've been an influence on him. :) My dad, on the other hand, introduced me to classic rock. And through his collection of records (that I have now "borrowed") I gained an appreciation for not only vinyl as a medium, but many of the awesome bands from the 1970s.

  13. holyfool says I am the older brother, so I can't really say. My uncle is the only other real music lover in my family, and through him I got exposed to Kiss, Skynyrd, Kraftwerk, Schooly D, Afrika Bambaataa, Michael Jackson, ABC, Thin Lizzy, early house music and loads of hip hop. He turned me on to Portishead too, for which I am ver grateful. My sister never really assimilated too much of my music (her interests lie elsewhere), but I've managed to turn her on to some good stuff.

  18. Manos says Great question! My brother continues to be a big influence. First it was Linda Rondstadt, Jackson brown and CSNY, then Talking Heads, then bebop and Latin jazz. He plays drums and is as obsessed with music as I am.
