WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

If You are Gonna Do a Cover, You Better Do it Like this....and Cover Yourself with a Morning Jacket

Posted about 1 year ago

When you meet someone and they love music as much as you do.. its a beautiful thing. So beautiful in fact, that stylistic preferences and specific content seem to become trivial.... and just the simple speak of admiration blends any two musical worlds together.

With that said; I had the opprotunity to meet someone that is as thrilled about music as I am, maybe even more so, and had introduced me to some pretty dope bands in our two outings.

On our way to the Embarcadero, after a delicious meal served at the counter of a bar on Folsom, he began to play a cover.. he introduced the song, " I love this band, I know you know the orginial tune, but these guys did an amazing job."

I instantly thought of the horrible renditon of "I Will Survive" by Cake. I mean, come on folks, the hype is gone and its over ten years later.. the only reason why you liked that shit is because the original is embedded in our subconcious like craving chocolate on your period and eating pizza at 3 in the morning afer too many drinks. Its not good for us but we just cant help it, and make excuses for it.

I instantly loved the beginning and thankfully my tuned ear was IN tune and I knew right from the beginning it was "Tyrone," a Erykah Badu live track that began as just that, a live show track that became a cult favorite.. the only recording being from that live show ( if any of you readers were actually at that show, allow me to bow down beginning... now)

My Morning Jacket is a great band. I went out and bought two CD's today and absolutley LOVE their covers of "Tyrone" and "Rocket Man," his voice has hints of Neil Young with an essence of White-Stripe back beat and Johnny Winter guitar.. with the over all appeal of music by Chad Fischer ( google my friends, google) my introducer made a comment that this was indeed the best live act he has ever seen and they are not continuing touring due to an injury where the lead singer fell off the stage... too bad...

I am exctited to continue to figure out more about this band as the singers voice is comfortable and also sometimes beautifully dissonant. I am just shocked and elated to hear a band take such an amazing track and really mold it to their own, not by changing tempo or key, but by truly relying on the differences of musical taste and sound. Well done Morning Jacket!!!
