I realize this is five years too late... but as you all know I found my old CD's and am really feeling nostalgic and thinking I should bring out all the oldies 'cause quite frankly the shit on the radio aint worth me taking time out of my day to talk about... less a few songs.
Bonnie Raitt is the shit. I have a story.
So when I came back to SF from NYC I was on this whole Yoga trip (I now practice and teach pilates). There was this beautiful, peaceful, nuturing studio in Mill Valley that I frequented often, primarily for the free Mighty Leaf tea and nice chant music. As I am doing a warrior pose, my ass booming out of my tight spandex/lycra blend yogi pants, I broke concentration as this tiny little woman in front of me had the most intense red hair I had ever seen. And as she turned to face the Sun, I noticed a snow-capped icicle of white shaping her face. Holy shit; it was Bonnie Raitt. And I couldnt gush over her, couldnt tell her how amazing and influential she is and was. I had to just pretned to breathe deeply and get in my car and drive away. Though; I did lag to see what kind of car she drove. Navy Volvo. Didnt get the plates.
Bonnie Raitt "The Capitol Years ( 1989-2003)" is a classic. Everyone should own it. Great for a dinner party, great to vaccum your house to, great to go on a road trip and trip out.
Indeed.
"Lovers Will," "One Belief Away," are bombness. She has the ability to rock out almost country style on her guitar while maintaining some amazing reggae and blues bass and melody... and it all makes sense. Softness, with an edge.. lyrics that actually mean something, lyrics so simple and honest they are as relevant now as they were twenty years ago. I think I love her so much, partly because I indentify almost explicitly with her music vision, but also for her integrity and honesty. Its hard to be a Blues frontwoman, especially when you barely reach 5'3 and are white. But regardless of skin color, or hair color for that matter, if you truly feel it, if your voice truly just sounds the way it is supposed to sound... then people wil feel you.....I tell myself this often when there are moments of insecurity in my own music.
Go and get this damn album if you dont have it. Seriously, just do it.. no excuses... Fuck that new Jeezy and Radiohead.. go buy this damn album and catch her upcoming shows....

Anyone ever tell you that you have impeccable taste, liz? Seroiusly, post after post, nothin' but golden voices given their props. Loved the anecdote. Love Bonnie.
I remember seeeing her on the "Old Grey Whistle Test" ( a programme on the electromagnetic televisor) before you were born. She's a good singer, and a decent player of the big electric banjo.
Sshe did a version of "True Love Is hard To Find" with Toots Hibbert a few years back, singing and playing slide with the top Jamaican session guys

The player is being cranky, but you've made me go and pull out some Bonnie to hear that voice. I like your comment that if your voice is allowed to be its natural sound, then people responf. That's so true. It's a lovely anecdote...but getting her license plate number...that's a bit stalkerish. ;-D
no silly, I DIDNT get her license plate... just took a look at her ride :)
Oh, I misinterpreted what you wrote. Thought you wanted to get them, not the opposite. And a sensible ride it is too.
