It grows on you sometimes

There are those few songs that make you say "wow" the first time you hear them. Then there are those that take a while, but grow on you. I remember when "Always Love" made it's debut on 94/9 and it was one of those "wow" moments. Halloran paused, then played it again because it was too good to wait to hear again. Nada Surf gave me another one of those "wow" moments in concert. They were touring with Guster who'd wowed me several years earlier when I went to see my friend's band open for them. I'd never even heard of Guster before and walked out with a new favorite. When they came to SDSU last fall I made sure to get tickets. I liked Nada Surf and figured that was a bonus. They ended up being my favorite act of the night. Daniel Lorca is just fascinating to watch live.I remember hearing Beck "Loser" for the first time on the radio on my way to work at an adult contemporary station in Portland. I liked that song instantly and called my friend who was working at knrk and asked him who he'd just played. Hmmm Beck. Ok, I'll give that CD a try. It's remained one of my favorites throughout the years but ended up at the bottom of the stack. When Guero came out last year it was one of those that was so so to me. I didn't hate it, but didn't LOVE it just the same. Now the more I hear it, the more I've grown to love it. Gorillaz "Feel Good Inc." was an instant love song and still is. My producer and I drop everything and start dancing everytime we hear it. Another is Bedouin Soundclash "When The Night Feels My Song." Still not sick of it and kinda sad it's lost it's rotation on the radio. Then there's the music that you grow to hate. I remember two years in a row at the adult contemporary station just dreading the holidays for one reason. "Mary's Boychild" by Bony M. It sounded like a gospel choir of Smurfs took over with their casios and the radio listeners LOVED it. The phone rang off the hook constantly with requests for that damn song for a month solid. My Program Director walked in one day, grabbed the cart out of the player and smashed it into the wall. He looked at me calmly and said "That's done." I almost proposed to him. After working in Adult Contemporary, Oldies and Classic Rock formats for the last dozen years, there are certain artists I'd be happy to never see/hear/think about again. Elton John and Fleetwood Mac fall under that category. Not because they're bad, I'm just sick of them. Of current music, the Killers are number one on that list. To be fair, I never liked them in the first place. System Of A Down... I didn't get that at all the first time I heard them. I remember Tommy who was the morning show host at the time introduced them this way "You will love it. Your girlfriend will hate it. Whoever says you can't make love to this music, isn't trying hard enough." I still can't say I'm a fan, but the music has grown on me enough that I don't cringe when I hear it.
