happy birthday bowie

Posted about 1 year ago
A few facts about our beloved Bowie...-Born January 8, 1947 in Brixton, London as David Robert Jones to an Irish mother and English father-At age 15, was punched in the left eye by his friend, David Underwood, during a fight over a girl. Doctors operated but could not fully repair the damage, leaving his pupil permanently dilated. It appears brown to some people, but the iris is naturally blue. -Bowie's interest in music sparked at the age of nine when his father brought home a collection of American 45's, including Fats Domino, Chuck Berry and Little Richard. Of listening to "Tutti Frutti," Bowie would later state, "I had heard God."-Chose "Bowie" for his stage name after the Alamo hero Jim Bowie and his famous Bowie knife.- In October 2004, Bowie was hit in his dilated left eye with a lollipop stick while performing in Oslo, Norway. Bowie reportedly stopped the concert and screamed, "You fucking wanker! You little fucker!" at the lollipop thrower. The concert resumed and Bowie later apologized for his harsh reaction. And a few images...(Honestly, what could be better than David Bowie in The Labyrinth as the Goblin King...in spandex?? And oh, the hair...) (Or as Nikola Tesla in The Prestige? What a spectacular entrance)Happy Birthday Bowie!

  1. Sturgell says One more for the list.... Nagisa Oshima's film Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence (1983)! Bowie played Major Jack Celliers, a prisoner of war in a Japanese internment camp.

  2. Jonh Ingham says A nice selection of pix for the birthday boy! Hard to think he's 60 - is he going to get on a stage again? (I love that lollipop incident - what a star-type reaction!) And yes, for cool screen appearances, The Prestige is pretty hard to beat.

  3. Bartleby says Many happy returns, Mr Jones!!! This is probably one of the funkiest output by Ziggy. The guitar of Earl Slick just nails it, not to mention George Murray's wicked bass-line. Love the words and the pics ;) ("Changesbowie" not "Station to Station?")

  4. lilja88 says Sturgell: I haven't seen that one yet. I must put it on my list of movies to watch! Ingham: Google is a useful tool for finding fantastic images. I'm pretty sure Bowie is still performing. I mean, he's already in his 60's, and people still love him, so why stop now?

  7. contrabandwidth says This was my least favorite incarnation of Bowie in the last 17 years - from the ??Hours?? album - I call him "Kid Bowie" or "mid life crisis Bowie - For such a trendsetter, this look had me saying "wha?"

  8. vannatta says contra... isn't just totally trendy to be anti-trendy?... and didn't I catch the kids wearing that long sleeve pajama top (Gap?) like about a month later...? ;)

  9. contrabandwidth says Sure but anyone that old with the blonde streaks in their hair smacks at desperation. And that's not a Bowie I'd like to imagine.

  10. lilja88 says haha i agree with you, contra. that hairstyle seems more "latin pop star" than "british rock star"

  11. jerste says When you own Ziggy and Hunky Dory, you dont need anything else.. (sure..) However i might say that until Tonight (the album) Bowie was not just great, but much more than that he was like a big Bro i would follow everywhere. I often regretted that Bowie's song were not "dance-able". Golden Years showed exactly the opposite. Almost quaint but dearly essential.
