as the story goes

I had heard of Rilo Kiley before, but never really gave them a listen. I finally bought their latest album yesterday when I was browsing for new music at Streetlight Records in Santa Cruz. I was instantly hooked. There are so many styles and genres going on in this album. "Dejalo" has a conspicuous latin pop influence, "Dreamworld" could be mistaken for a Fleetwood Mac song, and "The Moneymaker" is slightly punk rock. There are about a million songs titled "Silver Lining," but this one reminds me of waking up on a sunny morning to the smell of coffee and feeling oddly optimistic and happy-go-lucky. It's a good feeling. And I'm not going back into rags or in the holeand our bruises are comingbut we will never foldand i was your silver liningas the story goesi was your silver lining but now im goldhooray hooray im your silver lining hooray hooray but now im gold. And i was your silver lining high up on my toeswell you were running through fields of hitchhikersas the story goeshooray hooray im your silver lininghooray hooray but now im goldhooray hooray im your silver lininghooray hooray but now im goldAnd the grass it was a tickingand the sun was on the risei never felt so wickedas when i willed our love to dieand i was your silver lining as the story goesi was your silver lining but now im goldhooray hooray im your silver lininghooray hooray but now im goldhooray hooray im your silver lininghooray hooray but now im goldbut now im goldbut now im goldbut now im gold

  1. Bartleby says Thanks for posting the lyrics. I've been listening to RK's "Under The Blacklight" for quite a while but haven't noticed how this happy-go-lucky song is actually about dreary domestic violence. Crikey, what an eye opener. The overtly blithe mood of the album was at odds with my sensitivity and also in contrast with what I was used to from Rilo Kiley and especially Ms Lewis. On listening and re-re-listening, the saccharine coat gives way to the bitterest realities such as child abuse (on "15") or prostitution and STD (on "Close Call") and also domestic violence... Perhaps, I'm wrong on this... PS: I believe you're fan of M.I.A. FluxcCapacitor posted this cover (or remake), I thought you might like it:

  2. lilja88 says I agree, if you listen to a song over and over again and pay attention to the words, your perspective on it becomes entirely different... the African version of Paper Planes is AWESOME. thanks so much, Bartleby!!! :)
