this album rocks

really digging this alan lomax collection sampler i picked up at my local library. it is rippin'. that's about as good a review as i can give... this record is so cool for it's historical and sonic content. some of the field recordings in here are so amazing for their time, and the cleaner recordings at the end of the disc are so nice. like butter, only for the ears instead of the thighs.

pet sounds

don't know how this one escaped me for so long. pets are on the brain as of late as many moggers have been having pet issues this past year. plus i read a brian wilson biography on the beach in mexico...
strange trip that guy has been on...

pet sounds is a truly groundbreaking album for it's time and a great example of brian wilson's collaberative spirit, and his use of the studio as instrument. i have a vocal only mix of this record as well as the original. it is equally as strong a record accapella. those voices are amazing.

well, looking at the picture of my dead cat below is just plain depressing. so instead here is a picture of the sunrise i saw for the last couple of weeks in tulum mexico. what a beautiful place. it sucks to be back in humboldt and back to work. the old mog o matic is off my machine once again, so the same songs are still there that have been up forever. truth is i have been listening a bunch to the new howlin' rain cd magnificent fiend, and have been glad that my good friends finaly made the pages of rolling stone magazine. also ghostland observatory has been popular in this household as of late, mofro, and eilen jewel too. the winamp player has been a little buggy these days so we have returned to using to using the old fashioned stereo more in the house, as well as rediscovering some of our old records. been spinning some beach boys, lyres, black flag, and small faces. never a dull moment...

recalling the great album rock of the seveties, this oakland band carries on that tradition of flailing guitars in grand style...

i played a bunch of shows with these guys as far back as 1998 (with comets on fire as the opening band!) and they are still around. never seem to hear any mainstream hype for drunk horse, but they sure deserve it. their keyboardist/guitarist is also in the howlin' rain too these days.

great lyrics...

melvins make your underwear ride up, real high like.

from wikipedia...
King Buzzo is an EP by The Melvins' guitarist Buzz Osborne, which was released in 1992 through Boner Records. Osborne recruited Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl for the project. Grohl is credited as "Dale Nixon", a pseudonym Greg Ginn adopted to play bass on Black Flag's My War.

Osborne does not appear on "Skeeter" as it is a remix of the song "Just Another Story About Skeeter Thompson" that Grohl recorded December 23, 1990 along with five other songs that were available on Grohl's Late! Pocketwatch solo album. Skeeter Thompson was the bassist of Grohl's old band Scream

Not a big crowd, which is ok by me. Lozen, a female sludge metal duo from tacoma washington opened the show, and layed down some heavy lines for us to ponder. Qui topped off the bill, and did not disappoint. they feature the guitarist and drummer from l.a.'s gentleman callers, and jesus lizard/scratch acid frontman david yow on vocal duties. yow is a freaky little mo fo, and was tons of fun to watch manicly bounding across the sticky flooring at the alibi.

the crowd was in a mellow mood, and yow took advantage of the relaxed atmosphere to admit his failings on certain numbers... "since we're being honest here..."

new howlin' rain is due out soon

i can't wait for the next howlin' rain album to come out. i hear it is in the can, and they have added eureka's favored son, michael jackson as resident guitarist. joel robinow of drunkhorse is tickling the ivory (keys.) they had the pleasure of opening for roky erickson, and mudhoney last spring, and are about to do some shows with the queens of the stoneage. cant wait to hear it fellas. http://www.howlinrain.com/

this song is a mellower offering from their first record, but rings true to me of influences like the faces, and sixties-seventies psych rock.

"death is this communion," if i may say, fucking shreds. well, the membership changes a bit from time to time, but the message is always the same. matt pike sounds more and more like lemmy everyday. that could never have a bad connotation in my book. perhaps it's just the effect of relentless touring and raging, and rocking.

well, eleven years ago today i got married. somehow i have managed to keep it together. this one goes out to my beloved ball and chain.

we watched the hotory of STAX records together on Great Performances the other night, and i had to shed a tear when Otis Redding's story was told. he was THE man! i love his music deeply, and i think the shared love for otis is one of the common threads my wife and i share musically. really, we have totally divergent likes in music, but our tastes criss cross where it counts. thanks baby, for eleven great ears. i mean years. she knows me so well. she gave me these...

no sleep till eureka or, never say never.

just got in from playing some shows up in washington and oregon. had a good time but spent the last 13 hours driving from seattle to eureka without stopping till the transmission on the band's van blew up 29 miles from home. so close. long day, and night. glad to be home, although it was fun to see old friends and do some good old rockin' and rolling, i am beat. uppon checking my email, my next door neigbor sent me a link to a friend of his' website of printmaking work. turns out, his friend is debora iyall, singer for the eighties band romeo void, and a fellow hsu art alumnist. i remember hearing this song on the radio lots as a kid in the sf bay area. romeo void's never say never... this is a great track from one of video's pioneers.

I just saw a trailer for the rebroadcast of P.O.V. - Lomax the song hunter
This is the story of Alan Lomax who's father recorded Leadbelly for the first time, and who dilligently created a record of folk music in America (and the world) for all ears to hear. This looks like a good show, and i have not seen it before, but i figured i'd throw a heads up out there in case it is being rebroadcast in your area. You never know.

fond memories

i was just listening to the new white stripes record (icky) and was thinking back to the two times they played at the vista here in eureka. the vista was a small, resturant/bar in old town that put on some great shows back in the nineteys. wondering if anybody documented the white stripes shows that happened there prompted a google search where i found this...

(a description from chunklet.com)
"Assholes across America:
Bob
Vista Del Mar promoter/owner, Eureka, California
The owner of the stinky seaside Del Mar was initially quite friendly, providing a nice sit-down meal before clearing the club for the show — which was the best of the tour. The Von Bondies did the first-ever live version of “Cass and Henry,” with Jason Stollsteimer dipping into the crowd, mic clenched in fist, spitting out vocals like a rambling drunk. The White Stripes covered the MC5’s “Looking at You.” It was magical. But when payment time came, the once-nice Bob became the ultimate dick. He wouldn’t give the Von Bondies their guarantee (a mere $150) because they didn’t have their contracts. Everyone knows that contracts in such situations are the equivalent of toilet paper, but this guy was not wiping. Instead, he made a late-night phone call, waking Dave Kaplan (decidedly not an asshole) to have him fax the contracts over. Only then would he pay the Von Bondies. The same man saved face by buying The Dirtbombs pizza, and getting us a hotel room the next month."

too funny, well bob is a great guy, but i never heard about him trying to stiff the von bondies. i'm gonna have to ask him about this one...

somehow this album escaped me. not for long. digging "the crybaby". lots of cool guest singers on this one, from lief garrett to david yow, to hank III, to mike patton, to jim thirwell of foetus. my favorite track so far...

i just finished watching the pbs american masters tribute to atlantic records founder Ahmet Ertegün. a great story that touches upon all the musical tastes present on this site, and reminder that all american and rock and jazz music holds it's roots in the blues. turkish immigrant brothers ahmet and neshui ertegum had a profound love for blues and jazz whem the arrived in america. they were instrumental in sharing it with the rest of us...

memory lane

ok, i have never really checked out much in the way of video online, but this brings back some serious memories. Crashpryor's recent reference to the re-emergence of the bad brains got me thinking about searching for video in this direction. whatever people may think of jello biafra, the dead kennedys as a band kicked ass. this song was a great expression of how my friends and i felt about the s.f.p.d. and cops in general.

well, if we're being creative with it, there's allways...

i allways got a kick out of this single. not only for the homage to the disease that took the life of author flannery o'conner (lupus), but the rather humorous cover version of janet jackson's nasty. not the most likely thing you'd expect from killdozer, but really with these guys you never know what to expect. they always do good cover though, which is a tough job to do well. this record is still avaliable on the touch and go catalog. enjoy.

my all time favorite cover songs? i can think of two albums i love made up entirely of cover songs. the first being...
KILLDOZER, for ladies only

the second being...
THE DIRTBOMBS, ultraglide in black

monotonix

ok, just got in from a great show featuring monotonix from israel. oh my baby. that's rock and roll. blurring the line between band and audience, these three cats did not dissapoint. at one point in the show the singer took my beanie off my head, and placed it over the face of the drummer so he could not see. nobody skipped a beat. no one has danced so freely on the bar of the jambalya in a long, long time, much less played a drum set on it.
i promise to add some sounds to this post tomorrow. (got dsl starting tomorrow after 7 years of dialup) The invasions opened the show, and dragged by horses closed it down. good night on all counts.
p.s. new mog is cool.

can i just say i am totally stoked my favorite metal band, The Hammers of Misfortune are back five years later with a new record. haven't heard it yet, but i am literally drooling with anticipation. The Locust Years is a reaction to the 911 tragedy, and features some new additons to the band that are pretty intruiging. after losing janis tanaka (from L7) on bass to pink, and adding a keyboard player, now pat rock (formerly of dirty power and pansy division) has joined the lineup of what was allready a completley ripping band. for more details on the current form of this band and a detailed history of it's members they have an excellent article here in the sf guardian...

these cats write excellent music, that is insightfull, intellegent, and frickin' shreds. i can't wait to get my hands on this recording...

over and out.

Pure Country Gold

had fun opening the show for these cats this weekend...
Pure Country Gold are a drum/guitar duo that hail from Portland Oregon. Their new self titled lp is recently released on Empty Records, and is pretty darn rockin'. There was some serious sweating going on on the dance floor as rock and roll rythms were doled out by the bucketfull. I kept being reminded of Elvis throughout the set, and enjoyed it completely.

flipper fucking rocks. gettin' fucked up and going through my forty fives. flipper was one of the best bands to annoy your parents with as an adolecent in the eighties. the best feature of this record by far is the locked groove at the end of brainwashed. i can listen to that for godamn hours. conditioning. i bet the atf has that in their torture playlist for breaking down unbelievers. waaaaaaaahhhhhhhh! i miss the farm in san fransisco. that was a great venue for so many fucked up punk rock shows. now i am an old fart. fuck it.

benjamin franklin freeman

really enjoyed the benjamin franklin freeman show. i didn't really know what to expect from these guys, but was pleasantly suprised by their performance. they are self described as progessive rock on their myspace profile, but i don't know if that's what i'd refer to their sound as. they kind of reminded me of dinosaur jr. at times, and were very accomplished at playing together as a band, complimenting each other's instruments by allowing each other the space to be heard. too many bands i see compete against themselves for volume in the mix rather than working together to achieve their sound. i could hear all the lyrics, and at the alibi, that is rare. i'm gonna try to upload a short clip i recorded on my handy dandy new flash recorder. we'll see if the dialup connection will allow it. check em out at www.benjaminfranklinfreeman.com

Mr. Tube and the Flying Objects

my buddy mike d just gave me a copy of Mr. Tube and the Flying Objects "Listen Up" cd. i like it allready. kind of garage rockish, kind of electronic. a nice blend of flavors that allmost reminds me of an east l.a. version of tv on the radio in places.

usually cd's that fly at me outta left field like this take a little getting used to as i am an old dog whose tastes are firmly cemented within a range of listening expeiences. this cd is growing on me quickly. there are some elements of electronic music here blended with live rock performance that make for an interesting sound that is definitely area specific. you can tell this is an amalgamation of what these guys have listened to over the years in the los angeles area. featuring paulo zappoli, mr. tube, jovi butz and a plethera of different drummers (drummers! can't live with em' can't make rock without em"!) recorded at stereo disguise recording laboratory.

The Slits, Dmonstrations show a smash.

Went to check out the slits show last night, and had a great time. The Monster Women of eureka opened the show with some rockin zombie riffs as they usually serve up cold off of the slab, followed by The Eureka Garbage Company who i cannot comment on as i drifted across the street to the shanty for a beer. Samoa's favored son, Bob Graves was at the helm of the bar, and he looked good behind it like the old days at the vista del mar. The Dmonstrations were ripping it up next with a bombastic assault to the ears i can only describe as scandalous! i bought the record. nuff said. The slits were an awesome topper for the evening, and i loved hearing Ari Up's english accent pipe up at the beginning of the set. "Can we get some sluff on the vocals? Some delay, reberb as you call it?" They played brilliantly, and the room was definitely grooving to them. I was pleasantly supprised to hear some nice dance hall, and dub style reggae songs with that bass rattling through Eureka's bowels. Really great musicians, super steady drummer who really rocked it tight, nice harmony, and backup vocals. Well worth saying out past my bedtime for. They even played I Heard it Through the Gapervine, a favorite from the seventies Slits. It was great to see lots of parents, and their kids in attendance, and everybody having a good time. Something must have been in the air cause i noticed lots of diallated pupils around the Synapsis gallery space that evening, and great music all night long.

The Adventures of The Lone Ranger

This album cover illustration makes me laugh. It still works on so many levels. This is a fun record of old radio broadcasts of The Lone Ranger. Despite being a treasure trove of old stereotypes the album is enjoyable to listen to. It becons us back to a simpler time when imagination still had a foothold in the mind. Television had not yet spelled it all out for us, and destroyed creativity. Like "video killed the radio", so did t.v. kill these kinds of radio tales. One of the features I enjoy most about these kinds of recordings is the prominently featured foley artists of the day. I allways think to myself, "that would be a cool job making all those backround noises." Cupping together coconuts to make the horse hoof sounds like the characters in Monty Python's Holy Grail. Another great feature of this album is the Lone Ranger Theme music. Rossini wrote the William Tell Overture for and entirely different storyline, but the association with the Lone Ranger series is indellable. Fun record kids, wear it out in good health.

Somebody's gotta say something in praise of this man

This is the first cat to introduce me to reggae music. That's kind of a big deal. This music is part of the soundtrack of my life. Especially my young life. Becoming aware of the radio for the first time, and hearing the pumping reggae rythm of Hold Me Tight. I love the "bow bow baw bow's" in this song. Reminds me of walking on the sunny faux brick kitchen linoleum towards the old zenith mono am radio on the counter. My sisters would have KFRC the big 610 dialed in.

Strawberry Shortcake

Asside from the record being a little scratchy, this album rocks. I really like it berry berry much. It's awfully good please thank you. the music on this record sounded very familiar to me, and after a google search I discovered it is composed and performed by none other than Flo and Eddie(Howard Kaylan and Mark Volman). Awesome, so pretty much after they did work on Frank Zappa's 200 Motels, and Alice Cooper and Friends, they made this bitchen Strawberry Shortcake record and movie. The music is definitely reminicent of their later work with The Turtles. I picked this lp up at my local recycling center, and the first time the kid and i listened to it we both got freaked out. It's a bit scary on first listen, but now my girl is pretty much desensitised to it. The Purple Pieman still kinda freaks me out. I'm so proud my kid has one of these...(thanks jackson'shttp://www.thisoldtoy.com/new-images/images-ok/800-899/FP825-EB126348873-B.jpg!

Hammers of Misfortune

Ok, I'm not exactly a huge metal fan by any means, but I have to give this record and band props. The Hammers of Misfortune are with out a doubt one of the most genuinely creative and ripping metal bands out there today. I got turned on to this band when a friend (Ian Gradek, bassist for Howlin' Rain) commissioned me to build him an electic guitar. He wanted an axe inlayed on the fretboard, and this band and record is the reason why. He gave me a copy of this cd (The Bastard) as an explination, and a source of inspiration. Well, it worked. This is one of the most creatively written metal abums i have listened to in a long time. It listens like an opera with acts, and parts, each song blending seamlessly into the other. It is self produced by the band and guitar player John Cobbett, who also plays in another great metal band from SF/Oakland called Ludicra. I have listened to this record over and over, and refuse to tire of it. The vocal and bass playing talents of Janis Tanaka are also a prominent feature on The Bastard. You may remember her from L7, or the as current bass player for Pink. Come to think of it the drumming, and guitar playing also kick much ass. I guess part of what i like about this album is that it is solid through and through, each player contributing to to the whole in and equal, and incredible way. Like any classic, a story is told, and what a story it is (enchanted axe posseses the soul of bastard son of a tyrant king, who kills said king, takes the throne where axe spirit takes over and kills all the worthless humans as revenge for the forest creatures, in a nutshell). Great tale, and fun to decifer. One last observation on this one is the artwork is superb, making The Hammers of Misfortune's The Bastard a metal album to last the ages. If you like metal, get this one.

Dirty Power

Just found a promo cd given to me by Dirty Power from San Francisco. I haven't heard anything from these guys in a while, but listening to this cd reminded me of what a rocking band they are. They have a self titled LP out on Dead Teenager records up in Seattle that is pretty ripping, but this Small Offering cd is fun. Takes me back to the days of bands like UFO, Gamma, and Montrose. Solid rock music to bang your head to. This disc also has a Kinks cover tune (I need you) that I love! Their web site looks like they have been innactive for a few months (a bit worrysome), as I would hate to see a band as talented as this one fade away. (http://www.dirtypower.net) Lead singer, and guitarist Patrock was also a member of the band Pansy Division, but it looks like he is no longer a member according to the roster of thier MySpace page. Another cover on this one is Round and Round by Ratt. God I hated Ratt, but Dirty Power playing it makes the song pallatable for me. When I hear Ratt doing it i get the taste of hairspray at the back of my throat. Yuck. Rock on Dirty Power.....

just saw this band play the peal lounge in eureka, and what a great time. these guys are a lot of fun to watch. they remind me of several things at once, but possible influences that come to mind are; captain beefheart, early butthole surfers, stones, and at times the two guitars chiming along together (with a baritone sax) reminded me of federation x. really enjoyed the show, and the fun they were having on stage was catching. if you get a chance to see em live i highly recommend it. the best part, they sell vinyl!!! i got two records from them, their first self titled lp, and their latest 7" effort (t-bone parts 1&2). the 7" is great and represents pretty well what you might hear of this band live. the first self titled lp is very experimental, and noisy. for fans of noise, this is for you. i probably won't listen to this lp too often honestly, but i sure as heck enjoyed the live show. they have four lp relases, so i am curious what the other records have to offer. a friend described their second lp as "punk rock". here is their upcoming california tour schedule...

R.L. Burnside. RIP.

wife just put on an R.L Burnside cd, and it got me to thinking. this record has been one of my mainstays for the last few years. haven't listened to it for a while, and not due to burn out. usually it means it's in her car cd collection, at work, or lost. this is one of the great blues records of all time. i don't care if it's to new for you scratchy 78 record blues purists. R.L. is one of the best blues men out there. This record was engineered/produced by a guy who grew up where i live (local hero, tom rothrock) who is best known for producing the early Beck work. this record mixes classic blues style with some newer production style (ie: scratching records in the backround, and samples). I LOVE THIS RECORD!!!! he passed away last year at the age of 78. R.L. you will be missed.

it's interesting how the hang em high soundtrack compares to the two morricone ones. there are some striking similarities, and i think it is the oldest of the three movies. at least its the oldest print of the three records (1968). cool beans. copied them to computer yesterday! Aaaaahhaaaahhhaaaahhhaaaaaah, Wah wah wah!
