R.L. Burnside. RIP.

Posted over 5 years ago
wife just put on an R.L Burnside cd, and it got me to thinking. this record has been one of my mainstays for the last few years. haven't listened to it for a while, and not due to burn out. usually it means it's in her car cd collection, at work, or lost. this is one of the great blues records of all time. i don't care if it's to new for you scratchy 78 record blues purists. R.L. is one of the best blues men out there. This record was engineered/produced by a guy who grew up where i live (local hero, tom rothrock) who is best known for producing the early Beck work. this record mixes classic blues style with some newer production style (ie: scratching records in the backround, and samples). I LOVE THIS RECORD!!!! he passed away last year at the age of 78. R.L. you will be missed.

  1. raithrover says Thing I always remember about RL was the fact he was meant to be supporting the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion (alongside the brilliant Doo Rag) on their UK tour. Due to family reasons he never made the trip, which was a shame as it would have topped off a brilliant night.

  6. leftoverking says fat possum records has quite a roster of folks like R.L. too. Another favorite on there is Hasil Adkins. The cramps cover his song She Said. crazy rockabily stuff.

  9. Davis Presley says R.I.P.R.L. I feel fortunate to have seen the man play live once. The other time he was scheduled to play it got cancelled due to his health issues. You read about the man's life and you understand why he played the music he did. The "Ass Pocket..." LP still gets played on a semi-frequent basis around here. I do wonder what BL III is doing now. Is he still going at it? Another great live experience. You got to love a "band" who can tour the country in a compact car.
