I awoke gradually this morning to the sound of this:
The 14 minutes and 43 seconds infiltrated my dreams, then slowly roused me to a semi conscious state where I was in a tippee (I've always wanted to sleep in one) in the middle of some humid forest somewhere...out there... with people playing delicately playing percussion instruments somewhere in the background...
It was the perfect combination of relaxation and positive energy needed to face this day... yet another day working flat out on transferring data from one computer to another... (see previous red wine, stairs and airports post) I was concerned about transferring my music library and retaining the MOG-O-MATIC information already stored. Well, I can update:
- music successfully transferred (almost all of it but I'll come to that)...
- MOG-O-MATIC currently installing on new computer while I type away on drunken-old-battered, bruised and slightly dejected old computer ...
Phew, thank roller-skating-saturdays that the weekend is over! Work is less stressful than this...
so now to the "almost all"... yes, I have transferred ALMOST all of my music collection. Some of it was on an external hard drive. which (perhaps in sympathy for the "old" computer?) decided to die a noisy, cheesy film-style death - i do apologise for sounding geeky like all i talk about is technical computer but I have lost SO MUCH of my past projects I could weeeeeeep.... old designs, old movies, old photos... and my old music library! hrmffff
Anyway, MOG-O-MATIC is 18% through installing and indexing on my new computer (will it remember my old history I wonder, will it know who I am? or will I have to start from scratch?... time will tell).
All this time in front of not one but two computers worrying about data and investigating online storage solutions has put me in a very strange state of mind... I attempt to musically sum it up with this:
Fairy Dance of Twinkle And Shadow
Susumu Yokota
which I'll include in a comment to this post.
I want to thank all of you that helped, advised, and held my hand through this process...I raise my glass to you.

Here's that track I mentioned, Susumu Yokota.

I like the Lou Harrison quite a bit - fairly heavy gamelan influence in there, which is always an excellent thing. The Susuma Yakota I'm still trying to wrap my brain around, though it does have a certain contrary sonic allure. In the meantime, here's my recent, considerably more prosaic wakeup song.

lampgirl, you always post the coolest stuff, i need to take time this week & go thru the previous posts i havent read yet. both selections are really good & give you plenty of time to wake up. i spend a lot of time on the computer sometimes so i can relate. transfering data is one of the most boring experiences.
bill, i was expecting a brazillian lullaby like that from you. i played one brazil related song too, sort of...

Very cool, Danny, even if it would be hard to imagine a rhythmic treatment that was less sambaesque. Ary Barroso (the composer) is spinning in his grave.

Nice tracks lampgirl. Hadn't heard the Lou Harrison track before, but have been listening to a bit of Susumu Yokota lately.

ivylander, i'm not familiar with gamelan, will have to explore.
thank you soulrocket! , ... you know the film Brazil? There was a time when i used to fall asleep (and wake up) to that every night on dvd so I have that song (or a version of it?) firmly scorched across my ears!
rawkiddo, where'd that video come from?
Ciphermedia - - - rumours have it susumo yokota is releasing new album in october. hmmhmmmmmMy Trusted MOGs
lamp this I am unsure of. I was looking at youtube and it seems they only have live clips of the band. The pink caught my eye, and I loved watching it.

A little bit of gamelan for you.

In 1975, Harrison met Ki K.P.H. Wasitodiningrat, familiarly known as Pak Cokro, one of the great masters of the Javanese gamelan orchestra in that century.

I missed this post of yours, LG. I guess I wasn't really awake. Pity really because I love all the tunes posted above by you and the others. You've got cool pals.
I seldom wake up to music. I tend to listen to Radio 4 on Sunday mornings. I enjoy my "Desert Island Discs" (when it's on) I guess.
To me, mornings are for spoken words, random comments on the radio (Radio 4 or BBC World Service)

aaah yes... but when I say what do you listen to when you wake up, it's not really about the choice. It's about the randomness of the first thing you hear between dream and consciousness. Police cars? Neighbours? Seagulls? Dogs? I find it hard to get to sleep without music or a film or some kind of noise... I need sound, so falling asleep to music means I'm never entirely sure what I'll wake up to... I used to wake up to the radio but those voices just used to became characters in my dream and I'd sleep in forEVER! which maybe I still do...?hmmm.

Beautifully said, LG. I must admit this "music pervading your dreams" theme eluded me. My insomnia took its toll. I don't awake or dream any more. If I do (which I must still be doing), I'm completely unaware of it.
I hear all noises and all kinds of soft rattle in the night and early dawn. The sound of the city, the street, the neighbours awaking from their dreams, I guess.
