WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

My favorite moment this week

So, today... it's hot. It's really hot. But today is also the big release day for Ollabelle's "Riverside Battle Songs", which, in my book, is a very important day. Hot or not hot. So, I found myself sitting at a little table at Banjo Jim's this evening, at the beginning of the second set sometime after 10. The air conditioning is cranking, the equipment is pumping, the music is rocking and Ollabelle is just getting started on a song with their friend Keith when the power shorts out. This is 2003 blackout repeat, this is a fuse gone bad. Rather than panic and stop, the band restarts on a new song, "Before This Time" from their first album. Like I said, it's hot, but the band presses on and they have the audience in the palm of their hand. There is something about losing the power that seems to make an experience more special, seems to make you appreciate what you've got in front of you. Call me crazy, but hearing that band sing in a totally acoustic passionate setting did that for me! If you haven't heard them, you've got to check them out. They'll have a MOG up soon and they are on 'myspace' now. You can also check them out at www.ollabelle.net.They're really pretty amazing - good enough that even I will walk 15 blocks from the D train to Fordham University and WFUV in the Bronx in this heat to watch them tape a show.

  2. moose says ditto. each member of Ollabelle could go solo. Their voices are an instrument -- a cacophony of beautiful sound -- like a choir, only something much closer, much more through you... And be sure to catch Glenn on the keys. He's a trained organist and I am pretty sure I saw him playing at least three keyboards at once... in one word: amazing

  3. lady day says I totally agree - Fiona has actually been doing a few solo gigs around NYC as well. They are all pretty amazing and honestly, the nicest band I've ever worked with. They're headed back to your hood in October. They're opening for Hem - a great pairing!!
