Just went down stairs to get a cup of coffee and this interview was on the radio. What a wonderful conversation to wake up to - a lot of points I've heard or read of before, some I hadn't. I especially liked the point he made about the crying and soothing between infant and mother as the first musical response. First one had to recognize the different tones, but also then had to associate c...

Musical misses

Over the years it has come to my attention that I have an uncanny knack for missing great shows. I shouldn't complain - I've seen many great shows too. But still, I hope it's a trend that is coming to an end. The first - and worst - time: The Cramps, Montreal 1992(?). You just can't imagine how excited I was for this trip. I grew up in a small town, and great shows were far and few between...

Cut-ups!

So Sureshot had the idea yesterday that we could have a cut-up contest (see the first Bowie post), so I'm jumping right in. I put itunes on random and then took the first line (or first few words) of each song (as judged by myself, yes), didn't skip any, 'cause well, that would be stupid and defeat the purpose. The title is my own, and I inserted one word (in brackets) near the end (couldn't r...

He likes me, he likes me!

  • Artist:
    Catch 23
  • Track:
    Propane

So I realized yesterday while hanging out with Colm that I had never played him any of my recordings of past bands I have been in. This suddenly seemed very odd to me, considering how much he digs music. Maybe I did it on purpose? Thinks to self, "Oh no, but what if he says it's boring?", I would maybe be a little heart-broken (for those of you not in the know, Colm is my best friend's preci...

Mognation(s) - A National Character?

Our top albums list has put me in mind of about this time last year when CBC radio began "The National Playlist", an interactive program hosted by Jian Ghomeshi & guest hosts who would nominate 4 new songs a week, defend their choices, and veto others (all with good humour, and of course, politeness). Listeners from all over Canada phoned or emailed in their votes, trying to keep their favorit...
