Try again, I get FUNnier.

Posted almost 5 years ago
I'm bored. Here's a clip that makes me laugh. While we're on the subject of boredom, I gotta say that I've given Belle & Sebastian, and The New Pornographers a bit of a chance and they just don't do it for me. Talking about what I don't like bores me too, I don't usually do it. I bring it up in the hopes that some of you can suggest THE album to try by each band before I make up my mind. These were just the first 2 that came to mind (as I find myself often skipping their songs on my ipod). Oh, and one more thing (which will surely leave me ducking) - Elliott Smith. Not saying I don't like him. I only encountered his music this year, the first time was watching Jem Cohen's film, and it really moved me, in particular the song "Between the Bars", which I still think is great. But I find myself only thinking a few songs here and there are really good. I was very convinced that I would really like him - so name THE Smith album that will have me running to him like the co-dependent barfly that my inner muse really is.

  3. thill says that is cheating smooth hegemon! i have to agree with you on ALL counts. I think I should like Belle and Sebastian more than i do. I just saw them on tv last night doing two songs off their new album and I really did like them. She's Losing It is one of my FAVORITE songs of all time though. Elliott Smith. I like a song here or there but i way too much of a depressive to put him on. i cannot take it. New Pornographers also hit and miss with me.

  4. kristiana says one, which one, walter? Rach (is Rach ok?), I don't even know, sometimes I just don't remember things like names of albums or songs unless they really stuck (I think this was a subconscious reaction to growing up with the boys always talking/arguing the merits of this that and the other album by so and so. silly huh? but probably true, knowing me! ;) I'm just looking for people to tell me what they think is the best/most convincing album by each...

  5. Smooth Hegemon says Fair enough, thill. It's midterms. I'm sick of the honor code. I'm a pretty big fan of Belle and Sebastian although I will admit some of their stuff is pretty snooze-worthy. I like every track on the album _Fold Your Hands Child, You Walk Like a Peasant_, and "The Chalet Lines" is one of the most gut-wrenching songs I've heard to date. "This is Just a Modern Rock Song," "If You're Feeling Sinister," and "Like Dylan in the Movies" are poppy, interesting, and wry individual tracks. Speaking of French children's shows, anyone else LOVE _Maya the Bee_ when they were a kid?

  7. kaleef says i like tigermilk by belle and sebastian (but i have not listened to them all, and i wouldn't condsider myself a reliable fan, they can come and go for me) but i do love elliott smith. i liked him when he was in heatmiser, and i liked his solo stuff even more. i would recommend "xo" or "either/or" as a good all-around album by him. and if i can say something without saying anything? he killed himself by stabbing his heart..............twice. i believe most great art comes from those who are tortured or tormented in some way. you can hear it; his came from _something._

You have posted more this week eh? Ok, thanks for the recommendations Rach! I'm gonna blow $50 on itunes today so am eager for any other suggestions anyone might have. The only band I've heard for the first time lately and thought were pretty decent on first listen were the Silversun Pickups.

  12. Rawkkiddoh says If you want to cheat a little try the Push Barman to Open Old Wounds. Its a collection of all their EP's, and for a two disc set its a nice price. I could put it on multiply if you would like.

  15. kristiana says Kaleef - I know, I know! XO didn't really do it for me, though. Is Either/Or similar? I think I've heard it, but not positive. What about the self-titled one Woz mentioned? thanks Walter. Kev - Tura Satana, yeah yeah!

  17. kristiana says Kev, I don't really do the multiply thing anymore, only to look at Uni's photos sometimes. I was sorta torn the whole time about whether it was right to be "sharing" music, well, in particular when it comes to smaller artists. Is this silly? I'm still not sure!

  21. Rawkkiddoh says I have been using it just to get some bands that I want to listen to, and down the line when I am working again will buy the album. I like having a digital music collection, but owning the cd is so much more for me. When I download stuff, I still make it a point to go buy the album. If its an artist I am unsure of, I think of it as a test drive. If I listen and I like it, I will get the album soon. If not, it goes in the recycle bin and no harm done. Its why I head over to Barnes and Nobel once a week, to listen to new artists that I have heard of on MOG. I feel bad when I download the music, but every band I have ever downloaded I have gone and bought the album. I guess its kind of like putting something away on layaway.

  22. kristiana says Yeah, I've thought about it like that, for sure - but then asked my lazy self, "WILL I go buy it if I already have it?". I know myself well enough, lol.

  25. goodmusiconly says I got your back on this one kristiana: Listen to Elliott's _From a Basement on the Hill_ FIRST. Turn the first track up loud, and give the CD a few spins before you make your decision. A little history - I came across Elliott years before this album came out and brushed him off as too light and poppy for my taste. But after hearing _Basement_ a few times my opinon completely changed, and now (as I emphatically state on my page) am fanatical about him. Don't pass it up! I also recommend Silversun Pickups, try out the EP Pikul if you want to spend just a few bucks and just get your toes wet.

  27. 1234chainsaw says Regarding B&S, I'm not a big fan but somehow I seem to have most of their stuff. I'd go first with the early EPs, but for an album I'd say Tigermilk as well. Regarding the New Pornographers, something tells me that the bit more ramshackle and aggressive sound of their debut, Mass Romantic, might sit well with you. The power-popper in me really likes that record, partly because it's clearly influenced by Pointed Sticks.

  29. ookpik says I know everyone always says Tigermilk (first album and all that), but I think album #2, "If You're Feeling Sinister," is where it's at for B&S. It's got all the good aspects of Tigermilk (simple, melodic, twee as all fuck) plus a bit... MORE. Funnier lyrics, better horn parts, more tambourine, more sex, higher ratio of upbeat:sappy (but you still get Fox In The Snow and Boy Done Wrong Again if you like the sappy songs). If that doesn't work, The Life Pursuit sounds like it was made by a separate band, so you could try that. And that video clip is killing me. It's totally Broads Gone Wild.

  30. Spike says That clip from _Faster, Pussycat Kill! Kill"_ by Russ Meyer may or may not have lyrical links to Elliot Smith, but in any case, the first time I saw the film some thirty-odd years ago, a woman I knew happened to walk by while I was waiting in line for a ticket, and so I had a lot of explaining to do. During the film, two women sitting right in front of me made out the whole time. heybuddy's YouTube offering had end credits that said that the animation was by Robert Breer. He's been one of America's top underground film-makers since the 1950's, and I used to know him pretty well. I loved Moonshild's soundtrack cut.

  31. kristiana says Spike, funny stuff! Cool that Buddy's clip had a connection for you, I liked the sound of it. Thanks Matt! Pekka, thanks for the input, and you're probably right about the NP. I'm more and more convinced that Tigermilk it is, although I like Ookpik's take on it too - ah, only so much money! GMO, I suspect your advice is on the mark. Will do.

  32. Drummond76 says For Elliot Smith I like the self titled album for acoustic stuff, if you want more orchestral, fancy arrangements go with X/O or From a Basement... I really like Belle and Sebastian so I would reccomend If you are feeling Sinister or The boy with the Arab Strap albums. Some of the later ones have great songs but aren't as consistant. The earlier stuff is more Zombies or Donovan while the later stuff is definitely more 70's influence- Bowie etc. If you're looking for new things similar to these I'd check out Sweden's Shout Out Louds or Earlimart. Another current fave is Ed Harcourt. Definitely check him out.

  33. Wade says Elliot Smith: Either Or is, in IMHO, his masterpiece. It is much different from XO, very sparse, not much orchestration. Belle and Sebastian: If you're feeling sinister is my favorite-all songs are great except the title track.

  34. tybees says Kristiana, I'm not sure if you're familiar with eMusic but you can get any of the B & S albums mentioned above as well as any NP record there for way less money than iTunes. They have an offer of 100 free mp3's as a trial version "here":http://www.emusic.com/iskin, and you get to keep the mp3's. This comes highly recommended by myself, and no I do not represent eMusic :) But, seeing as how you're in Canada this might not be available to you (sorry if it isn't) Oh and I have never been able to get into B & S. Especially the newer record, ??Life Pursuit??, snoooree. I love all 3 NP records though, but ??Twin Cinema?? is the best.
