WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

I'm From Further North Than You

Posted over 2 years ago
And thus it is time for me to start rummaging through my shoeboxes full of cassettes to dig out my countdown-to- winter-solstice favorites. Today I woke up to a sky promising snow and now we have a light dusting. Winter is definitely not my favorite season, but those first few days of snow I feel such a sense of release. I guess sorta like an acceptance that it's finally here, and might as well make the most of it? Invest it with a romance that is a little harder to do when it's minus 40 bazillion in January and ya don't really feel like leaving your cave? Let's begin. First up - The Wedding Present. My Hit Parade 1 cassette, but I always start with side 2, and the track Cattle and Cane. Didn't find a version of it on youtube, but hey, this is a good choice too and it made for a handy post title!

  1. 1234chainsaw says I remember buying Hit Parade 1 (on CD, in my case, soon after I'd started buying on CD more often than on vinyl)! "Cattle And Cane" is a pretty good, if very faithful, Go-Betweens cover. Many other Weddoes covers are less faithful, like that frenetic version of "It's Not Unusual" :D

  2. madrid spacestation spain says ah snow! i can't wait for that and hopefully better than last year. though when not on a mountain, it is hard to stay out of winter hibernation i have not heard of wedding present, but i think i heard some snow falling during this song, the Prodigy's Climbatize is my track to rev. up the cold weather. fancy a coffee?

  3. Dale says See, I'm a late-comer to the Weddoes, so I've not heard anything from Hit Parade. I liked the embedded song from Take Fountain, for sure.

  4. kristiana says It figures that the first person to comment IS in fact from further north than me. Saw that coming though - it came off sounding a bit like a challenge eh? :P I thought about including the go-betweens version as I just like it so much. Maybe I will. The first time I heard it was WP doing it though, and it seemed so perfect coming through the headphones one evening overlooking my sleepy winter valley I call home, in a cab with a few drinks in me, leaving some wanky get-together of English grads... all was right with the world. Again.

  5. leftoverking says never heard of the wedding present. i'd like to hear their take on "it's not unusual."

  6. kristiana says Ah, Dale! I would think WP would be right up your alley! Glad you enjoyed it. MSS, I seem to recall you're somewhere in the Northeast - Boston, isn't it? I do fancy a coffee, in fact! It's time to go refill and stare at the heavy gray sky from my front porch...by all means, others share their "winter" music!

  7. 1234chainsaw says OK, I won't wait until Sunday. Enjoy!

  8. kristiana says Haha, I looked for it on youtube after Pekka mentioned it, but didn't find it. But sometimes it's just me. Wow, I'm surprised at the lack of exposure to the WP. I love Dave Gedge, his lyrics are often brutally wonderful, as far as affairs of the heart go. And who can blame him? You might know his other band, Cinerama?

  9. 1234chainsaw says I have pretty much everything that Weddoes and Cinerama have released in album-length format, plus a smattering of singles, so interested parties may get in touch. I have to say I was rather disappointed in Take Fountain though.

  11. I am says Ahh snow. Just when the Fuck is it going to get here? I am all waxed up and ready to go.

  12. Lester Jonze says Winter is always my favorite time of year to listen to music. January may be my favorite month for it out of all. I like just withdrawing into my music pulling away from the cold, kickin jazz and classical and blues all day, I don't have to worry about being trapped into rock music all the time. It's all I listen to when it's warm. It's just hard to break out the Miles Davis when it's 11 am in the middle of summer and it's a hundred degrees out. Or something..

  13. Girlcrawl says Excellent post! Love the WP and Cinerama as well. Hope you will feature more music from your 'countdown-to- winter-solstice favorites' collection. I currently reside within the subtropics zone, and we really never experience a true winter season...miss the snow and cold at times. Ditto Lester's sentiment. Cheers.

  14. kristiana says Exactly Lester, well said. Yeah, I missed winter the year I was in Thailand. Ya know what ya know, eh? I will post some more...after the weekend! Have a good one. Chris - you're waxing? ;)

  15. Mike the Knife says My wintertime rule: Bundle up and plug in!

  16. I am says Yeah, just my bottom. No need to wax the top. Did I mention the wax is really hot. Smooth.... I also fill in the dents with hot drippy plastic. It's practically erotic. You should see me work the wood. Now that's special. Takes me about 3 or 4 days. I like to rub my hand over it again and again just to find places I missed the first time, then I rub it really hard to get those places too. I won't bore you with the details.

  18. soulrocket says love the wedding presents. how come you still own some tapes? i threw a couple of boxes to the garbage can last year.. most of them were unplayable after the years.
    Permalink posted 12/01/2007
  19. kristiana says Why do I still own tapes? Well! I still hold on to my tapes because I am a nostalgic fool. Pulling out, say, a 20 year old Pixies mix that I've played thousands of times and just looking at it brings back memories and being amazed that it still plays, and kinda loving that it doesn't sound perfect but sounds like it always did, etc. etc. :) I also still enjoy the experience of flipping the tapes. And still own a "walkman". Am I sounding geeky enough yet? Hey there Keith, thanks for adding that track! Leftover King tracked it down for me eventually, swell guy that he is. Yep, Spring wouldn't be quite so hopeful if Winter didn't knock it outta us first. Chris, I asked for it, didn't I?

  20. soulrocket says and being amazed that it still plays > that is what i meant... i couldnt play 90% of them. tapes were cool, still are.
    Permalink posted 12/04/2007
  21. kristiana says Yeah, it's kinda a miracle that a lot of them still do!
