I'm here to talk about The Helio Sequence's album, "Love and Distance", released in 2004.I downloaded "Everyone Knows Everyone" by a suggestion on KEXP, and fell in love with the upbeat chorus, bouncy electro and a harmonica, something you don't normally hear in an electronic style song. Eventually, however, I forgot about that song, until I discovered their album second hand in a store here in Halifax. It's not normal I find a CD that doesn't suck in the second hand section of CD Plus, so this was monumental. With a gift card to blow, I added it to my collection of CDs.I listened to "Love and Distance"on the way home, and was immediately surprised by the first track. It sounded like an old shitty rock song. I shrugged, assuming it was a dud. Next came "Repeater", and had the same effect on me. Shitty rock music. I was trying to figure out if this was even the same electro band I remembered hearing from "Everyone Knows Everyone".My dad, almost fifty, asked, "What's this band?"I said, "Helio Sequence. Why?"He said he liked it a lot. Figures. It probably brought him back to the old days of his youth. Meanwhile, I was cringing at the melodies and the guitar work. But wait! The third track, "Don't Look Away," is an improvement. Not by a whole lot, but by a bit. It perked me up a little more. And then the fourth track, "Let it Fall Apart", is actually quite catchy and really a nice song, with satisfying beeps and blips.Of course I knew "Everyone Knows Everyone", the next track, and you know, everything from the third track on is very good music. I particularly like the last two songs. The final song on the album "Looks Good (But You Looked Away)", is sad, beautifully composed and charming with a wind-chime ending. In all, Helio Sequence makes up for two terrible beginning tracks with probably 6 really great songs that are sure to stick in your head, and your iTunes mixes.
