As I gradually emerge from the musical cocoon I've inhabited for the past 15 years or so, I make certain discoveries. Some happy and fortuitous, some not. The Decemberists definitely fall into the former category.I'd heard about them, but not heard them, until two nights ago, driving with my brother in his car, when he played the Picaresque CD for me all the way to the end of the line. Creeminy. Could Colin Meloy's voice be any more plaintive and evocative? Could the music be any more splendid? How do I live without these people as my life's soundtrack?This isn't my favorite song, it's just the one that I could find at the moment. Does it even matter which one I choose? Is there a bad one in the lot?
