Don't you hate when you forget a subject line? Or when someone emails you and doesn't put on a subjuect line?Recently I noticed a commercial on TV which again has taken a classic 80's song and co-opted it in order for us consumers to purchase more crap that others may afford mansions,yachts and fancy smancy things.In this case it was M&M's.Okay, okay I like like M&M's I am just feeling a little cranky this morning and I wanted to stir up the office. At least with M&M's we get chocolatey pleasure.Matt Johnson (AKA The The ) put together an array of songs in the 70's and 80's that painted not only a picture of London at the time but of the human condition. Some have called his music bleak or cynical, but I always saw a ray of hope in it. He has stories of the human condition.He was a son of a musician who as a kid saw bands like The Kinks, John Lee Hooker and the Small Faces hanging with his father. These influences and many more shaped his songwriting and music. He has been the one constant in The The which never really got big. Many of his later songs due to a sexual nature were banned from the radio.He still is around, but the M&M commercial has made me dig out Soul Mining, a great album. It's dark and light at the same time. Check out I've been Waiting, Uncertain Smile and Perfect.
